he's got incredible melodic instincts, reminds me less of durk and more of prime wiz khalifa. but ofc polo actually combines this supernatural knack for melody with emotional narratives, strong attention to detail, and surprisingly few references to wake-n-bakes.

"Bad Path" is one of my favorite songs of his, should have been on the album
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsB6mJ2BWGA

fav songs on the album are "effortless" "kings nightmare" and "deep wounds"

the wiz call from a melodic pov is pretty smart, very simple plainspoken melodic rap style on hooks

i have a soft spot for the music box beat from 'through the storm' and 'pop out' was a deserved smash, but those are def good highlight picks.

my favorite verse of his might be from this, love the way he keeps the same rhyme scheme for the whole verse. unflashy, but still technically impressive:

idk how I feel about mozzy. norcal represent, but idk. Im probably influenced by Philthy Rich’s diss track. Ok ban me

Love this album. Maybe just slightly less than Die A Legend but could still listen to it endlessly. Esp. stunned by "I Know."

for whatever reason i initially found it disappointing + seldom returned to it in full but somehow several of its tracks continued to grow on me over the next several months as i kept hearing them individually/outside the context of the album. "dnd" may still be my fav but i should prob revisit the whole thing again

I’d say Vice versa (not a&r’d enough) but yea

a song with polo g and lil durk? great! a song with polo g, lil durk, and the kid laroi? well...

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Monday, 21 June 2021 22:39 (four years ago)

I mean it’s prolly just cuz laroi is signed to lil bibby

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 21 June 2021 22:40 (four years ago)

true, but they could've slapped him on "broken guitars," which fits his style a bit better

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Monday, 21 June 2021 22:43 (four years ago)

it's overlong and the guests are predictable, they kinda gave it the default 'big 2021 rap album' treatment. the best songs are the ones that hew close to his roots (like "gnf" and the herbo song above), but since polo is so talented, the major label-iest moves actually work–i really dig the dababy-featuring radio play, for example.

My favorite mainstream hip-hop album since Lil Uzi Vert's

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 21 June 2021 23:06 (four years ago)

it's a pretty good album. i like most of the tracks, honestly. like, yeah, the a&r fingerprints are there in all the catchy guitar loops and strategically (tho sometimes bafflingly, as noted above) configured guest contributions, but hardly anything on it feels outside of his wheelhouse and he pulls it off well. kinda like how the massive, seemingly instant success he semi-stumbled upon with "rapstar" initially baffled* b/c it wasn't rly that different from many songs he had done previously

re: that song, i don't think it will ever go down as among my favorite of his tracks but it is definitely a good song and it's only grown on me. sort of a random landmark in his career but still worthy of being his first smash

opening and closing tracks both great. as far as the guitar-loop sonics go, i'm glad for "broken guitars" switching things up a bit on that front. nonetheless i do count some of the more predictably produced tracks among my faves, including guest-free ones like "black hearted" and "so real". i'm sure the sort of vulnerability he exhibits on the latter will register to some ears as corny but for me it can be subtly uplifting

the one song that completely pulled me out of the experience was "for the love of new york," the one with nicki minaj -- sounded so out of place that at first i thought the album must have ended and either i'd crossed into bonus tracks or something else altogether had started playing. but nope! i can't help but wonder if it was even originally intended for this album.

anyway yeah. good album!

(* at least it baffled ppl like me who know/like his music but aren't v plugged into the social media stuff that is such a big part of how younger folks experience pop music now, and thus had no idea about the pent-up hype the song had built until it came out)

dyl, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 06:53 (four years ago)

I like him and want to see him win but I thought this was easily the weakest of his three projects

i love polo and i love burna boy, but i can’t help but feel like they flatten each other’s best attributes in their new collab
