Har Mar Superstar: What the hell is this guy?

He has a molester mustache, gold-rimmed aviators and a pinstripe suit with his shirt tucked in yet completely unbuttoned. Apparently he breakdances in white jockey shorts on stage while singing. Anyone got the info on Ar Mar?

i might as well be the first to say: it's Har Mar

Al (sitcom), Friday, 22 November 2002 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

He has another, more rocking persona, called Sean Na Na. His name is Sean Tillman and he's from Minneapolis (i think) and I can't for the life of me understand why Warner Brothers thinks that he's gonna make it big. He has already recorded song(s) with Kelly Osborne. I once saw him (as Har Mar) at the Gilman in Berkeley and the audience was about 80% yuppies in suits who had 1/2-drunkenly wandered in from the "Brewery" across the street to see what the punk kids did for fun. They sure weren't into it. I don't think I was either.

SamHunt, Friday, 22 November 2002 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard the new album. Depending on my mood it either seems like so much ironic playaism or impressively witty fantasy (I mean, much of Prince's work could be considered "satire" on one level). The love ballad near the end is startlingly good, and "Elephant Walk" (Featuring Faint members) is the closest thing I could imagine to a freak novelty single. The songs don't lift-off enough to imagine them really going pop, but they're smart enough that a fluke hit might happen. Especially with a fine video.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 22 November 2002 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw him open up for Atom and His Package at some Midwestern college in some Midwestern college town. (I think it was Bloomington. Whether it was the Bloomington in Indiana or the Bloomington in Illinois, I can't remember.) Man, is that ever a Midwestern college show: Har Mar Superstar and Atom and His Package. Think about that for a moment while I try to recall why the hell I went to that show in the first place.

Oh yeah, that's right, I was living in the Midwest at the time and there was NOTHING ELSE TO DO.

Anyway, Har Mar didn't impress me, either with his shtick (pasty, balding Ron Jeremy lookalike strips down to his skivvies and does crotch-thrust Jazzercise) or his music (sequencer lounge-lite). I couldn't even enjoy it on an ironic level. Does anyone have any clue why he's gotten so popular?

I actually prefer "Ar Mar" because then it sounds like he's a pirate. Arrrrrrr. It'd be way cooler if he dressed up as a pirate for his shows, I think.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 22 November 2002 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the CONVICTION in his own GENIUS. He's the P*ul B*rman of electrotrash!

(Only Barman is funny)

(Oh, there's a Bloomington in Minnesota, too.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 22 November 2002 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

So is Har Mar!!!! I can't imagine listening to a CD of him, though. it's all in the desperate hurling of his sweaty body-meat around the stage. And the yelping. I mean, it's horrible. But it's quite a sight. I bet it's a better show than MCPB puts on, anyway.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 22 November 2002 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I, uh, have his first CD (give me a break! it was $4 at Amoeba after they couldn't move a single copy of it for months). It could be worse than it is, actually. But what is with the press on this guy? I think it's 99.999% due to the kelly osborne association. Anyway, guys who ironically strip down to their underwear during performances (you know who else I'm talking about) are irredeemably DUD DUD DUD.

Dan I., Friday, 22 November 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

well... sean tillman's a nice guy and way more dedicated than a lot of the folks out there. he's got a hell of a lot more talent than a lot of these polished idiots so frequently promoted by the majors. i think the thing i like most about tillman is that he's not a buff factory model with his baldness and gut, but he still acts like he's every bit as cool. in my book, that gives him way more character than most of the current line up of music superstars.

msp, Friday, 22 November 2002 08:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear that, but while I'm really into Sean Na Na, I was never into the Har Mar when it first came out, nor am I now. I seemed like the most elaborate joke in indie rock, and now its completely overtaken his persona, even Sean Na Na (see any of the photo shoots for My Majesty? right)

he's extraordinarily talented and charismatic, but I'm bummed that his "look at me! I'm a heavyset indie rock star but I made an album of R. Kelly songs!" phase has now drowned out the other mode.

I wish him all the success in the world, but I think the joke'll get old fast..

tinobeat (tinobeat), Friday, 22 November 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Har Mar play the teen stage at the Minnesota State Fair (trumped nick on the midwestern angle, there), and he's opened up for countless bands here. His schtick would maybe work if his tunes were great, but since his schtick is based on a certain contempt for R&B, that won't happen. I'm not a fan.

Cool thing about that show was that it really was PUBLIC and not one of the bars where the scenesters are all in on the joke. There was a strong hipster contingent at the front, but also plenty of people who hated it, baffled farm kids & parents, and a few teenage black girls who tried to get into his grooves, giggled through about 4 songs, and then got sick of it and bailed.

However, he does have the balls to do his thing wherever, whenever, no matter what, as shown here.

Also, his name's a local joke. There's a Har Mar Mall (StPaul?) with a Har Mar Superstore in it. Ha ha.

yeah... i suppose only in the "isn't that ironic? that's so cool!" sphere of hip, indie clubs could a heavyset r&b guy work.

and then again... i suppose your right... it's like andy kaufman, the joke is only funny to a certain segment... and then only for a certain amount of time...

Har Mar Superstar breaks Ryan Pitchfork's brain: C/D?

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

pfft. the andrew wk was far better (and far more revealing!)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

You've got to love the bit in which Ryan thinks "mmm...which novelty records are uptight indie people SUPPOSED to like?" and uses the Spike Jones record as an example of acceptable humorous music.

Is he for real? I'm starting to think this may be some kind of running joke.

I hope so, anyway.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

saw him play on tuesday at a bar in sf (parkside lounge), he was going for it, there was a sad moment when the look in his eyes exclaimed "this is really dumb what am i doing" but he went back into his thing but he lost that extra 10% that he was going for earlier in the set. i'm not into this style of performance/music personally (and i wasn't into AWK either when i saw him last march but his record is so intense that all is forgiven i <3 awk).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Whose schtick is better, Har Mar Superstar or Ryan Pitchfork?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't heard a note but it doesn't sound too much like I would enjoy it. I know what you mean about seeing performers have a sudden lack-of-faith-in-themselves moment and it's invariably pretty sad and uncomfortable. AWK, of course, has no such moments. I am overjoyed that you finally came around to listening to the album - cuz it was the album and its massive sound that converted me long before I saw him live (which was fun but definitely silly).

that last paragraph has to be one of the MOST eloquent moments of pitchfork writing.

seriously... like the fucking champs are sincere about their metal, what's so hard to believe that tillman can't love the r&b and still sell himself?

i've seen sean na na bust out with a nelly cover at the end of his set... he can do it justice. and he dug it. and members of the crowd dug it.

so what if he's challenging the typical r&b beauty pose?

some may think he's funny, but i think others might actually find him authentic.... and that's something the majors are hurdling to get lately. (see: avril)

Ryan Pitchfork has all the writing prowess of a young Jann S. Wenner.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i have to say i saw har mar at a jane magazine party [the guys DOES tour A LOT] and it's just stupid stuff. i am at a loss at why warner bros. signed him, probably the Osbourne connection and the fact that he's willing to tour his ass off to make them money [and that AOLTW is going down the shit-can and they think genxers are all "oooh, he's ironic" and whatever].

but it's like "is he serious?" "oh, he's rubbing his fat" "the songs are ok, i guess" "now he's got dirty underwear on" "is he serious?" "oh, he's making sex faces at that girl" "oh, he's rubbing his sweat over his fat" "oh, he is serious" ... you just get tired of it... and then realize you don't care.

david day (winslow), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh come on! I HAVE to care! He's from Minneapolis and he's semi-sorta-vaguely-famous! Plus he somehow gets away with doing exactly what Beck was torn apart for back in '99 (only without the fuzz-rock and the moog nuttiness and the electroclash stuff).

Ugh, how I loathe him.

Saw him not too long ago at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts after Crystal Antlers played. It was the second time I'd seen him; the first was at the Elbow Room in Ypsilanti, a claustrophobic dive if there ever was one. It was one of those shows that had me spending more time thinking about the intervening six or so years than the music, like I'd caught Baby Boomer Disease and could now only think of shows in the context of how I used to feel about them. Then I realized his schtick was exactly the same and that once I was just a hipster douchebag with a starter beard writing for some forgettable rag. It was my own fault that I spent the show alone, mumbling about paying $3 for a can of Tecate and being alternately confused and annoyed by the video show.

I WAS THERE

Anyway, he's playing the FYFest too, but hopefully someone on one of the other stages will be good.

This pretty much OTM

I saw him when we were visiting Minneapolis and it was a really fun show. Absolutely crazy atmosphere, strangers making out all over the place, everyone dancing and shoving each other, etc. etc. I would think outside of MN (and LA) he probably doesn't do so well. But he is a good songwriter (some of the time) and has a good voice (most of the time). His new album is pretty good if you're into poppy R&B. What I don't like is that he kind of blantantly rips off MJ; I mean "DUI" is basically "I Want You Back" at its core, hell he even strains his voice to get it super high. But some of his songs are classic - at the parties I go to we play "EZ Pass" a lot and it kills.
