If you do make a spotify playlist the song in spanish I mentioned is called “cuando era jovencito” / “cuando yo era un jovencito” which is actually a cover of Cottonfields that keeps the melody of the leadbelly original but changes the meaning of the lyrics completely. In spanish it becomes a song about a mom advicing his son about finding love.

I think the first version is by Los Apson, but there’s several covers including one by norteño legend, Ramon Ayala, which is the most popular version in Mexico. It isn’t unusual to hear it played live by banda/norteño groups, if you’re ever in Mexico and you end up in a seafood restaurant or a party were they have banda you can request it and there’s a high chance they know it. Just two days ago I was listening to a Philly Soul compilation when "Only the Strong Survive" came on, and I started thinking about how many songs involved what somebody's mama said. Quite a few, as it turns out.
