2)daft punk "da funk"
3)sabres of paradise "smokebelch II"(david holmes remix)
4)dave clarke "red 2"
5)galaxy II galaxy "hi-tech jazz"
6)underworld "rez"/"cowgirl"
7)slam "positive education"
8)stardust "music sound better with you"
9)isolee "beau mot plage"

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

hooray for "jaguar", btw.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

should i be worried that i have *no idea* what number 1 is ?
and wasn't 'red 2' the name of the e.p. ?
wasn't 'no-one's driving' the main track or was that 'red 3' ?

piscesboy, Friday, 22 November 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Jaguar is a fair choice, I mean it really is a fucking triumph for subtlety and a deft touch, it's not just a dance record, not just a record to dance to, it does have a kind of soul feel to it.

I don't know if I'd have Smokebelch so high, I love it and all but isn't it more the pinnacle of a beautiful old style piano breakdown rather than a massive seminal record in its own right? (cue outcry, hopefully not) Isolee in the top ten? Cheeky devils aren't they.

Again I love Positive Education but have to wonder about putting it in the top ten........call me a rockist but PRIVATE PSYCHEDELIC REEL!!!!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

For the first time ever, I like every single record in a Top 10 list. HURRAH!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

its ok...

i've never heard number 10

i'm puzzled by the red2 love. i mean its ok, but around that time there were a lot of tracks like this, red2 never really stood out for me particularly at all, but even at the time people went mental for it

gareth (gareth), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan, "private psychedelic reel" is #41. also, re. your comments on "smokebelch"; do you think that a record has to be seminal to make a list of this kind or isn't being a "pinnacle" enough? i agree with gareth on "red 2"; some of the hood/mills/saunderson stuff around that time was as good if not better.

here's 11-20:

11)paperclip people "throw"
12)josh wink "higher state of consciousness"
13)masters at work "to be in love"
14)nu yorican soul "i am the black gold of the sun" (4 hero mix)
15)global communication "the way"
16)black science orchestra "new jersey deep"
17)aphex twin "windowlicker"
18)purpose maker "the bells"
19)felix da housecat "silver screen, shower scene"
20)underworld "born slippy"

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard 5 or 10, I know I've heard red2 but I can't think how it goes. Cue the kind of massive wailing "WHAAAAAAAAT?" my friends who are older do when I ask what's this and it's Frankie Knuckles or something else.

I guess it doesn't have to be seminal, I just don't feel Smokebelch is an AMAZING record, I think it's a really really nice record but it doesn't have the wow factor for me, not in the same way even as number 12 there, Josh Wink.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i never EVER understood the fuss about hi-tech jazz. like, the sax!! ugh

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"hi-tech jazz" is ace but there are better underground resistance tracks.
10) is only a couple of years old. sparkly disco pop with a breathy scandinavian girl singer. samples madonna's "everybody".

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

quite suprised by annies inclusion but goddamn its a catchy lil number (where are the classics though - larry heard/guy called gerald)

james (james), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

piscesboy, get thee a copy/mp3 of Jaguar right now. Oh, and I think Positive Education is a fine choice and I fear I'm the most rockist person on the boards, so I don't know about replacing it being rockism.

(No real complaints with the list, I mean it's not that exciting but I like almost all of the tracks. Not so sure about 11-20though. If 14 is the token dnb track then it strikes me as an odd choice. Did it even make their top 50 dnb tracks last issue?)

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 22 November 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it was, rebecca, i love it but it does smack of the snobby real music giles peterson idea of what dnb is. tokenism ain't in it, though, it was a vote.

james, it's the best of the last 10 years (ie. THE JOCKEY SLUT YEARS!), hence the omissions.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Positive Education really that recent, actually? I first heard it on a comp with a load of 88-91 acid house so I'd assumed it was a year or two before Jockey Slut. My ignorance, I suppose; I have a lot of it in this area.

(I shd google but I am at work and about to leave)

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 22 November 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i just googled - jan 2001, wtf?

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

what the heck, the next 10:

21)chemical brothers "chemical beats"
22)azzido da bass "dooms night" (timo maas mix)
23)ian pooley "what's your number?" (jazzanova mix)
24)basement jaxx "fly life"
25)green velvet "flash"
26)alex reece "pulp fiction"
27)faze action "in the trees"
28)aaliyah "try again"
29)mos def "umi says"
30)i.f. "space invaders are smoking grass"

that'll do. other notable inclusions from lower dowm are:

32)missy elliott "get ur freak on"
35)plastikman "spastik"
37)roy davis jr "gabrielle"
42)red planet "star dancer" (! - gareth)
50)xpress 2 "lazy" (! - ronan)

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

in the same issue they count down their top singles and albums of 2002:

singles
1)truth hurts "addictive"
2)underworld "two months off"
3)the streets "weak become heroes"
4)ur "transition"
5)angie stone "wish i didn't miss you" (hex hector mix)#
6)lcd soundsystem "losing my edge"
7)the rapture "house of jealous lovers"
8)chemical brothers "star guitar"
9)felix..."what does it feel like" (royksopp mix)
10) missy elliott "work it"

weird list; where's cosmos? josh one? metro area 4?

...and check out the top 3 albums:

1)the streets "original pirate material"
2)the polyphonic spree "the beginning stages of..."
3)dj shadow "the private press"

hahaha! eclectic, huh?

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know the Jockey Slut mag, but is that UR/techno/purist angle typical?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 22 November 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it's always been kind of defined by a "this is real, quality dance music" aesthetic. like an anti-mixmag or something.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

by "real quality dance music" i mean their idea of it, not neccessarily mine.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

the dave-house aristocracy!

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmmm a little but in fairness it's more defined by "we hate trance and hard house" rather than a general snobbery. I mean they do seem to like cheesey house. It's fine by me really, haha.

That singles list is ridiculous, no Josh One, no Cosmos, no Archigram, no Lazy which gets into their top 100 oddly. Angie Stone? eh sorry no dice.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 November 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

that's what i was trying to say, ronan, defined more by what they don't like than what they do.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

It is the best mag, I still think, and the one I'd most like to write for.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 November 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, well maybe the following list deserves its own thread, but I'll just post it here.

I'll start at 1988, because before that I wasn't into dance yet. Underlying theme: "fuck quality dance tracks, fuck snobs, fuck the UK centrics, these tunes just tore up dancefloors here".

1988: Humanoid - Stakker Humanoid
1989: Rhythem Device - Acid Rock
1990: Joey Beltram - Energy Flash
1991: Human Resource - Dominator
1992: Westbam - The Mayday Anthem
1993: Jones & Stephenson - The First Rebirth
1994: Westbam - Celebration Generation
1995: Nikolai - Ready To Flow
1996: CJ Bolland - Sugar Is Sweeter (Armand Van Helden Remix)
1997: Carlos - La Silmarillia
1998: Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You
1999: Rank 1 - Airwave
2000: Push - Strange World (2000 Remake)
2001: Dumonde - Never Look Back
2002: Umek - Gatex

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never heard the David Holmes mix of "Smokebelch II", which is a bit of an omission. I've got the original single, too, which makes it even more odd.

"Positive Education" was originally released in '93 and rereleased last year, supposedly remixed though you'd never know. That's a good list, but "Jaguar" at number one? 'S alright.

Mike (mratford), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

if 'S = special. :)

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Good list Siegbran, but wasn't "Acid Rock" just a poor man's "Cubik"?

"Stakker Humanoid", though. Squelchiest record ever.

Mike (mratford), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually wondering how popular these records were in the UK...how much did Westbam, Human Resource, Carlos, Nikolai or Dumonde get played on the british floos?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

1989: Rhythem Device - Acid Rock
1995: Nikolai - Ready To Flow
1997: Carlos - La Silmarillia
2000: Push - Strange World (2000 Remake)
2001: Dumonde - Never Look Back

i've never heard of these. the others all made an impact of varying degrees.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Omission now corrected, I've just downloaded that Holmes mix. At first I was thinking that it wasn't as good as his "Like A Motorway" mix, but then the piano comes in - hearing that in a club rather than sitting at a computer must be pretty fucking special.

Mike (mratford), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Cubik was from 1990, so wouldn't that make it an Acid Rock ripoff?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The full 20 minutes of the Holmes thing is nice, especially if it's on the Flux Trax thing and you can stick on DJ Hell or Age of Love afterwards, beautiful.

(if this is nu-ilm then viva)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

2000: Push - Strange World (2000 Remake)

I'm sharing this right now on slsk, in the MIKE folder. This is MANDATORY, dude! It's, like, the biggest tune EVER!

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Cubik was from 1990, so wouldn't that make it an Acid Rock ripoff?

Quite possibly! I just remember hearing "Cubik" without knowing what it was, trying to track it down and buying "Acid Rock" by mistake.

There's a 20 minute version of that track? I must have this - I thought it was a bit short.

Mike (mratford), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

westbam played regularly at the orbit in morley, and mayday was reasonably big tune

gareth (gareth), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

who *in their right mind* thinks that
'flylife' is better than 'samba magic' ?

piscesboy, Friday, 22 November 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I do, but it's a close thing. That Atlantic Jaxx compilation is still their best album.

Mike (mratford), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

this is a much better list than i would have expected,i must have a look at jockey slut and see what its like...

robin (robin), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The full 20 minutes of the Holmes thing is nice

Understatement of the year. How long have I gone without this record? Ten years? I have wasted my life...

Oh God, if the piano break and acid freakout weren't enough, it then slips seamlessly back into the original and it's all so, so beautiful, and then the drums and the whistles start again, and the drums start getting more ominous, then military, the synth riff repeated over and over, and then it stops far too soon.

If there's a hundred minute version out there then I'm up for it.

Mike (mratford), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

global communication's "the way" is a brilliant record. I have mentioned it before, but I have always said it was by Mod Wheel, 'cause that is the name it was released under originally. I have a bootleg with "moroccan jack" on the other side. That is a good one, too.
The list makes me want to check out Jockey Slut more. I don't like URB that much anymore, so there I need something to replace it.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 22 November 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers for the Positive Education release date clarification, Mike.

So what's the jslut free cd like this month? I was tempted to buy it but I bought last month's for the cd and the drum'n'bass top 50 and found both a bit dull.

(I went into town and only bought one CD!!!! uh, and the one on the front of the Big Issue, but I'm fully expecting that to be so rubbish it doesn't even get one complete listen.)

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 22 November 2002 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

siegbran, that push strange world track is great. archetypal circa2000 trance, but i like it a lot

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 23 November 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

i boo the lack of orb, derrick may and orbital.

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 23 November 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

rebecca, the cd has plastikman's "spastik" on it, that means it's the best free cd EVAH!!

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 23 November 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

that push strange world track is great. archetypal circa2000 trance, but i like it a lot

It's probably THE ultimate "big room" tune, because of that huge sound with the stereophonic spatial delays and reverb on everything: the kicks, the claps, the synth lead, the bass. It never gets anywhere near happy or cheesy "epic" territory, M.I.K.E./Push is one of the few trance producers that concentrate on a pumping, pulsating repetitive sound rather than bringing in teutonic saws/semi-hoovers and arpeggiated melodies, or lapsing into boring hi-fi progressive. And that bizarre slow electro-breakbeat with the archaic 808 kicks and hihats around the 5:04 mark makes this tune definitely more interesting.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 24 November 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i also liked the push vs globe track, tranceformation

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 24 November 2002 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

but siegbran, you dont have the big deal in your list! i was hoping you would:(

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 24 November 2002 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The best Push tracks from this year must be the remix of the Matanka track and, despite the cheesy title, Tranzy State Of Mind 2002. M.I.K.E. seems to limit his Push alias to this kind of maximalistic pumping tracks quite strictly, they all work along the same lines, but it's a really effective formula.

And no, I don't have The Big Deal, not on MP3, nor on vinyl. It's impossible to find, like most other obscure vinyl-only dance tracks from the years before vinyl ripping crews...have you contacted Norman Feller himself yet? What's your s*ls*k alias btw?

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 25 November 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"who *in their right mind* thinks that
'flylife' is better than 'samba magic' ?"

Anyone who has heard the (brilliantly insane) Brixton version, surely? There's no track so good that half a dozen cockney-ragga MCs bawling over the top doesn't make it a million times better.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 25 November 2002 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that 'Eu Nao' is better than either 'Fly Life' OR 'Samba Magic'. Bada da dada Da! Great stuff.

Also, does anybody know where I can get an UNMIXED compact disc version of 'Jaguar'? I would really appreciate it.

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 25 November 2002 07:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Try 430 West, that label released the CDS of Jaguar.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 25 November 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)
