Just thinking about what happened to Morrissey, Mo Tucker, etc., wondering if there are warning signs that can be seen in advance.

The Lana Del Rey - Grimes - Doja Cat trifecta, which I've just made up.

I don't know that I have enough to base this on, but Bieber always strikes me as being two bad album cycles away from that already.

'currently relevant'
yeah but I mean as an example of what might happen
― imago, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 20:50 (four years ago) link
Novoselic is what inspired the post but it's not totally clear to me whether his current politics are toxically right-wing or weirdo-libertarian, maybe the distinction doesn't matter but making extremely fine genre distinctions is what ILM is all about

Ah, nm.
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 20:51 (four years ago) link
Lumping anyone who isn't a committed tankie together as evil right-wing scum is what ILX is all about though ;)

no it isn't

Ok.

do rockists think metal is relevant?

to answer that we need to work out what rockism even is in 2020
― imago, Tuesday, 2 June 2020 21:06 (four years ago) link
I said *less* rockist.

Never mind, I can't read today.
ariel pink and john maus always seemed this way to me, and lo they have both contributed original music to a new, sympathetic documentary on incels
in terms of warning signs idk just being a self-absorbed dick?
(but also ... i feel like in the US, there's this fucked up thing where we actually have created an individualist hobbesian nightmare world, and so it becomes harder to criticize certain people for being successful in this world on its own terms, when the alternative is oppression at best. i am subtweeting the recent TI/killer mike/virgil abloh thing as well as young thug's somewhat conservative stances recently, as well as kanye i guess)
― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Tuesday, 2 June 2020 21:41 (four years ago) link
i have a friend who is quite like ariel pink, he is a prolific musician and has schizophrenia. He is generally a good guy, but he has a certain misogynistic streak (which is bound up with a fetishization of the 1960s) and is easily pulled into conspiracy stuff, and I always wish he wouldn't.

i remember hearing some shit about Maus and Pink a few years ago.

vince staples was saying some really weird shit about art and artists as well
otoh this feels like a bit of a witch-hunt and there's no actual evidence about either of them being right-wing so...guess this is just a bit of fun so let's be cool eh lol

xpost yeah plenty of art and human effort i fux with was made by right wingers (ian curtis, borges, nietszche) but i think maybe what this is getting at is the artist-exceptionalist paradigm leading to reactionary politics?
― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 17:31 (four years ago) link
Bieber is way past the threshold. His mom is an anti-reproductive freedom nutter and he's a member of a megachurch cult
― beamish13, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 17:42 (four years ago) link
Nietzsche was a right-winger? Seems a little facile, unless you buy wholesale into the myth his nazi sister built.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 17:45 (four years ago) link
Country music to thread
― i am not throwing away my snot (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 17:53 (four years ago) link
But what Country musicians are going to develop toxic right wing politics in their middle-to-old age that don't already have them?
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 17:59 (four years ago) link
not to derail but while many of nietszche's insights can indeed be valuable for emancipatory politics, he himself was a bit of a reactionary. i mean his first book was all about how the weak, supine west has lost its way and needs to be more like the violent, manly ancients, and the stuff about slave morality in genealogy takes quite a bit of twisting to get anything resembling a left-wing perspective out of it
again i think what this thread is really getting at is that there is an expectation for musicians/artists to be leftwing, and so when one expresses right wing politics, it look intersting

I love arguing that Nietzsche wasn't right-wing but I'm not gonna do it on this thread.
I know a right-wing guy who surprised me as a fan of System of a Down back in their heyday. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.
