Anyway, if Refused are punk, then that means Fugazi is punk, and Fugazi is better than Refused.

They are not the greatest punk band ever. There's way too much competetion in that field for any one band to truly claim that title. You can't really compete with the founding fathers, like Black Flag, FEAR, DK, Bad Brains, Murphy's Law. And you have to admit that everything up until SOPTC was prety much standard chugga-chugga hardcore, which isn't all that exciting.
However, Shape Of Punk To Come was (and is) revolutionary. It is one of my personal favorites. It has pushed the boundries of the genre more than any band I can think of in the last 15 to 20 years. I think punk would turn out much better if the cookie-cutter bands out there right now would take a lesson from SOPTC.
In short, though they might not be the greatest punk band ever, I'd say SOPTC alone makes them the best punk band we've seen from about 1990 to present.

The founding fathers, none of them had a record out until 1980, by which time punk was all over bar the shouting!
"they are american = they are not punk"
Absolutely right. The Stooges came from Basingstoke, NY Dolls came from Milton Keynes and the Ramones all came from Coventry. Everybody knows that.
― Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 23 November 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)
One last thing, I agree with the sentiment that Dischord fell into a "style" & that music in general should not be bound by a "rule book" blah, blah, blah. You know the deal.
― Juan (Juan), Sunday, 24 November 2002 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)
It would be more interesting if they incorporated the noodly electronic bits into the songs, instead of using them like duck tape between tracks.
This being said, "The Shape of Punk to Come" sounded alot better than I thought it was going to sound. I file it into, "I'm glad my friend at the record store let me borrow it for a couple of days, so I didn't drop cash on this one, as I wouldn't have given it much listen after a couple of weeks."
Non musically related, those liner notes on "The Shape of Punk to Come" are the most overwrought since "Songs of a Dead Dreamer".

By the way, who does the song called "Scab," with all the skaters falling over and hurting themselves? I heard it ages ago, and can't get it out of my head. Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. AVRIL RULES.
― John-Denver, Monday, 25 November 2002 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)
I think someone brainwashed people into thinking Refused was good while in reality they really just wanted to Born Against / MRP. (Interestingly enough, the train of thought that brought me here was a mental enumeration of CD collections of one night stands.)
Fuck Swedish haircut rock.

I think that awful Crazy Town band where the dudes had names like Shifty Shitstain and stuff covered "New Noise".

refused are probably the best punk band ever, but TSOPTC will forever be tied with bad brains s/t for number one in my heart. and D'UH the refused are the best punk band of the 90s because punk in the 90s kinda sucked. of course fugazi kicked ass, but even red medicine isn't as good as the shape of punk to come (i agree it's fucking close and fugazi of course have way more good albums though) and fuck everything else. fuck nofx, rancid, bad religion, millencolin.
― samosa gibreel, Thursday, 23 April 2009 04:47 (sixteen years ago)
I kinda think "New Noise" sounds really dated.. I still like it, but it's just so y2k..
― billstevejim, Thursday, 23 April 2009 04:58 (sixteen years ago)
I bought that Shape of Punk to Come album around the time it came out and was unimpressed. Too slick and metal for my overwhelming PUNKNESS at the time. Will revisit.
― buttslam is a pretty good move (circa1916), Thursday, 23 April 2009 05:26 (sixteen years ago)
TSOPTC is one of my favorite albums of all time. I remember vividly when the singer of my then-hardcore band brought that album to our rehearsalroom one thursday evening right after it was released in 1998. We played one of our songs and the rest of the evening we spent listening to TSOPTC on repeat. We were floored. It made a definite impact on my band.
Their previous album Songs To Fan The Flames Of Discontent which was released in 1996 is a much more full-on 90's straight edge-hardcore album, but one of the very best in that specific genre.
I was lucky enough to see Refused three times when they were still active. Needless to say they slayed every time, even though I got the feeling that most hardcore-kids found them to be too pretentious.
― Marty Innerlogic, Thursday, 23 April 2009 10:34 (sixteen years ago)
refused are probably the best punk band ever,
Not at all. Not even close. Not within shouting distance. Several thousand zip codes and light years from being even remotely close.
― Alex in NYC, Thursday, 23 April 2009 12:25 (sixteen years ago)
Around the time 'The Shape...' dropped, I can imagine they might have been the sort of band I would have been a bit evangelistic about, were it not for the fact I'd been into Nation of Ulysses for about a year... as it was they were good and quite original but not as fun

Picked up the reissue of Shape on LP, sounds great on vinyl of course. The bonus live CD is absolutely incredible. At times you forget that it's not in the studio and these guys are playing the songs live together. Insane. Definitely a classic record.

Is any non-platinum selling band responsible for more terrible music? DJ at the bar made a big show of playing a song by Skrillex's first band to impress a girl and it was just whinier Refused - pretty sure that without them you don't have the last 15 years of emo/post-hardcore or whatever that started getting called.
