Ladytron - 17

Just how brilliant is this track? Like Fade to Grey meets Blue Monday, with a cool Liz Fraser-esque vocal moan bit. And the lyric - "they only want you when you're seventeen, when you're 21, you're no fun". Single of the year?

one of em. i love the bit early on where the beat stops for like half a bar then comes back in with this dazzling synth-string and the vocal on top, and the timestretched female groaning sound that drops in repeatedly a bit later. really great sounds and clever as fuck - Danny Hunt and Reuben Wu are bordering on electro-pop genius

It should be so much better... Those breakdown bits are amateurish and the production is flaccid. If this is the electroclash track that finally takes off, then electroclash is doomed.

I was a bit dissappointed by how much it's a carbon copy of Playgirl, but it's a great tune all the same.

Hate it hate it hate it. Especially the vocal. "Hey, that repeated lyric thing we did went over HUGE. Let's do it again [heheh] only slicker." Ladytron should have stopped after '604'. I only want their earlier songs. This year, they're no fun.

I've always thought Ladytron were totally "meh", but this IS damn fine. Even though I hate songs that use the word "polaroid". It's the changing movements that do it... I want to hear remixes.. are there any?

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a Richard Norris mix too, don't know under which alias tho.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"Danny Hunt and Reuben Wu are bordering on electro-pop genius"

Err..aren't there four people in Ladytron. Or do you think the girls just there for you to say "how cute"?

Camille, Friday, 22 November 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

yes thats right

stevem (blueski), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool, I think the single's out on Monday here. I'll check it out for the remixes. I've not heard 604 believe it or not.

Paul Cunningham, Friday, 22 November 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

on both counts ;)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Sheesh. You must be a devil with the ladies.

Camille, Friday, 22 November 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

unfortunately camille its my conditioned stereotypical assumption that the girls have a major hand in the songwriting and performing of the songs but considerably less so in the generation of the actual music - see my thread on Women in electronic/dance music - i'd be pleasantly surprised if they were just as involved as Hunt (who seems to be the real brains behind the group) in production and conception of the music

stevem (blueski), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

It is Rueben and Danny who do most of the production side, but in my mind the appeal of Ladytron is the blend of the lyrics, vocal arrangements and the studio sound, so to do Helen and Mira out of the "pop genius" bracket is rather unfair. Mira's also a very talented DJ to up her boys-toys credentials a bit.

'Light and Magic' also has more live instrumentation than '604', giving the songwriting side an extra boost.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

fair comment anna, i just tend to apreciate the techy-production side more cos i'm a geeky bloke...hey who likes the latest Bis album btw?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

not me. but i'm totally on the boat in regards to "17".

dyson (dyson), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Best single of the year from the best album of the year, w00t w00t. Yay! for Ladytron.

alexfack (alexfack), Saturday, 23 November 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Yikes! I belatedly got the Soulwax remix. Pretty err... heavy.

I like the Droyds remix. I remember a kind of weird/surreal/gay? moment last year when about 7 or 8 of my male friends sang the vocal on the way to the pub. It has a certain place in our hearts now.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

are your friends all steel workers, by chance?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

A few are electricians or carpenters. One or two engineers. Can you run with that???

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the soulwax mix pops up nicely on the freelance hellraiser muzik december cover cd. my kinda musically clueless (but here perhaps more on point) friend asked me if it was "marilyn manson at ibitha".
