POLL: Ellie Greenwich's Greatest Greatest hits: Be My Baby vs the rest

A couple of years ago I made a poll* where I asked for the best Ellie Greenwich-penned song, excluding Be My Baby, which I thought would make the spread a bit more interesting.

Some questioned whether Be My Baby would've actually won. An impressive 17 different tracks got votes in that poll, suggesting the depth of her amazing songwriting discography. In this poll you'll find the top 10 from then vs The Ronettes' Be My Baby, to conclusively decide the real ultimate winner

Did vote "Be My Baby" but I gotta admit there's some strong contenders - the Darlene Love, "Then He Kissed Me", "Out In The Streets".

Wow

My sentimental favorites on this list are "Then He Kissed Me" and "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)". The latter is so good it transcends seasonal. "Out in the Streets" is such an incredible vocal performance.

Whoa, I suddenly remembered "Kissed Me" was used in the opening of "Adventures in Babysitting," but when I googled the opening credits it noted the song was ... re-recorded? And upon further investigation I found lots of links to the Spector stuff "re-recorded," but no info on what that means. Any idea?

You’re asking what does re-recorded mean in general?

Lipstick O.G. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 July 2020 13:08 (five years ago)

No, I am asking if all of these songs were re-recorded, and when. Because I listened to the opening credits of "Babysitting" and ... it sounded like the original to me.

Wait, that is the original! There is a link I found to an album of this stuff re-recorded that *does* sound (terribly) re-recorded.

Not sure where you are seeing the re-recorded info, but going to hazard a guess that perhaps at some point there was version of the film, a Home Video version, where they couldn't get the rights so they used a re-recorded version and that is what is being referred to.

Lipstick O.G. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 July 2020 13:21 (five years ago)

This will be very difficult. Have a couple of favorites that are front runners but most of these are so good.

Still voting Darlene Love.

Get the point? Good, let's dance with nunchaku. (Eric H.), Thursday, 9 July 2020 17:11 (five years ago)

a lot of my favorites didn't make the cut from the previous poll, and there are a few tunes i dig which weren't even polled at all !

"river deep - mountain high" never really resonated with me, all fanfare and flourish but there's nothing really there.

beach boys tune is great, reminds me that i need to revisit "20/20"

voted for "then he kissed me"

budo jeru, Thursday, 9 July 2020 17:56 (five years ago)

call it a challop but i think you could make a case that goffin / king wrote better tunes for the chiffons, crystals, AND ronettes.

love barry-greenwich but i feel that the tunes shine when they're allowed to sort of revel in their youthful simplicity, like TJ's "hanky panky" or tunes like this one:

sounds fine without 12 maracas tbh

budo jeru, Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:07 (five years ago)

Love Goffin King but no way. Do agree that Greenwich (w Barry et al) has an interesting split between more stripped down arrangements without Specter (including her own arrangements) and then his wall of sound. And those other tracks serve as refreshing contrast. But she wrote all the best wall of sound tracks so also, no way

I saw Ronnie Spector sing "Be My Baby" at a Hoboken street fair about 20 years ago when it was humid and around 96 degrees. I got goosebumps. So...

I saw Lala Brooks at MoMA Queens with Georgia and Ira and Gaylord once. It was really good.

one month passes...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Oh no, I missed the original poll - I can see that quite clearly by the fact that no one voted for Leader of the Pack.

Could very easily be Be My Baby, Da Doo Ron Ron or Then He Kissed Me - but I'm going with Train From Kansas City, not just because I love the Shangri-Las, but because of the frankly amazing cover by the Shop Assistants, where they lovingly re-created not just the harmonies, but the entire *train*, using Mary Chain-esque guitar feedback.

Good thing I voted for “I Can Hear Music.”

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 00:06 (five years ago)

In recent years I’ve come to the conclusion that Charlie Gillett titled his book after one of its more prominent lyrics.

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 00:13 (five years ago)

So Be My Baby did indeed win, and maybe stole some votes from the previous poll winners? Christmas and Train from Kansas City fell a bit.

Anyway, all but one track got votes, so in conclusion, Ellie Greenwich penned a shitton of amazing songs.
