the Glitterbox compilations are so weird because I'll see stuff on them I like and think: well, the rest of the stuff I don't know must be good because what I do know here is excellent; and then I'll find the stuff I'm not already familiar with is really drab tech-house.

When Tim Sweeney plays himself on Beats In Space without a guest there's always a good bit of new nu disco.

Recommending nu-disco while swerving Glitterbox and Joey Negro is kinda tricky. My current favourite is The Shapeshifters ft Billy Porter "Finally Ready"... which is, er, on Glitterbox.

part of the difficulty is tasteful balanced sounds building over 32 bar sections to a few vocal samples only does so much for me... i feel like a lot of disco remixers / editors rely on that. i need a persona / something interesting going on in the lyrics department, or like a looseness / aliveness, someone playing a jazzy solo in real time. static 32 bar loops = snoozeville = i just zone out. i hate hearing that kind of music on a dance floor. i appreciate the chicken lips stuff because it's kinda loose and improv-y, sounds like they're editing down live jams.

i went back through my reflex edits.. that guy knows how to mix a sweet-sounding edit + he has a great sense of phrasing that usually avoids the static loop for 32 bars thing. i do wish he went a little further out there with weirder selections but i mean you can't get any better as far as 'classy, crowd-pleasing' goes.

Sure, people can do what they want. I know having different aliases for different genres used to be more common, less so in the social media era maybe? I was just surprised to see "Chrissy (house/disco)" on a flyer and was like "wait, isn't that Chrissy Murderbot?"

It's probably my own deal, I should have re-branded at some point but went with a big confusing discography instead.

I don't think it's that strange - dance music is singles-driven and lives in mixes and sets more than albums, and so a track is always in conversation with the music around it more so than other genres. It makes sense to me that dance music producers - and listeners - have wildly diffuse tastes as the way dance music is meant to be listened to, it encourages the dots to be joined in different ways.

honestly i didn't know chrissy did footwork. i know he does lots of fast rave tracks. t's probably a dumb reason but i never go faster than 130 bpm or so because i start finding it hard to dance to myself. his disco/house stuff came to my attention years 'too late' because i live in a podunk-ass place but i like that they are dynamic, fun tracks with a light touch and usually some kind of vocal hook.

i'm very averse to this situation we're somehow in where every microgenre of party music has walls up guarding it from every other microgenre of party music. i find it a real buzzkill when producers or djs get really into talking about what microgenre they're into now that 'tech house' is suddenly passe or whatever. zzzz, usually another new flavor of boring. i mean the good stuff is sprinkled (very lightly) throughout. ihe folks i want to connect with just know a good or interesting song or track or edit or whatever you want to call it when they hear it / move to it.

anyway that marshall jefferson remix is probably not to some more discerning tastes on this board but it will probably be in my top 10 tracks of the year, an exquisite bawling-on-the-dance-floor barnstormer.

Yeah obviously he's gone deep on lots of different genres of dance music, I really enjoyed some of those mixes at the time. I guess it smacked of trend-hopping to me given the prominence of footwork vs house/disco during those years, but that's probably unfair. I know from experience that it can be a natural shift based on what you're hearing, what your friends are making/playing, etc.

yeah it's true. there's also this huge messy thing of being a white man making music with black roots. it seems like he's been reasonably above-ground about that.
