I like the cover of "Unknown Pleasures." The cover of the second album is pretty good too.

that thing ppl say about Dylan, that covers often best the originals, kind of applies here imo. (though I vehemently disagree wrt Dylan)

xpost Yeah, I don't know about that. Nobody does Joy Division like Joy Division. I do like the covers by Low and Bedhead though.

If the bedroom is so cold why not just turn on the heater, duh.

Codeine did a great cover of Atmosphere

GirlsVsBoys did She's Lost Control which I recall liking a lot.

Might not think a New Orleans brass band cover would work but it does. JD never sounded so fun. And a great video.

I see what you did there.

Xiu Xiu's cover of "Ceremony" (from one of their earliest releases, the Chapel of the Chimes EP) is something special

Oooh, I love the Grace Jones cover.

New Order – 'Ceremony'

I had kinda forgotten until now that I had this on CD, The Nau Ensemble, variations on JD, reminds me a little of Arvo Part.

I've always loved the Technova cover of Atmosphere at the end of Weatherall's fabric mix

willem, Sunday, 19 July 2020 16:46 (five years ago)

i learned about joy division through moby's cover of "new dawn fades"

Radiohead's version of "Ceremony" was remarkably faithful iirc. Swing Kids's take on "Warsaw" also pretty cool from what I remember.

Swans did two versions of Love Will Tear Us Apart. Gira's was terrible, Jarboe's was great.

Searching for metal Joy Division covers led me to Neurosis's version of "Day of the Lords", which is a beaut and I think gets closer to how I hear JD than most indie covers do: https://youtu.be/7skHOQlGM0U

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Sunday, 19 July 2020 18:02 (five years ago)

Makes sense that Neurosis would get it right. JD was occasionally atmosludge avant la lettre.

pomenitul, Sunday, 19 July 2020 18:04 (five years ago)

Lots of heavy rock in JD's DNA.

The Fields o' Fat Henry (Tom D.), Sunday, 19 July 2020 18:05 (five years ago)

Especially on Unknown Pleasures. I wonder whether any of them were Sabbath fans.

Jah Division is great

My partner experienced serious cognitive dissonance when I pointed out that the guy who played those riffs is the same guy who sang "Bizarre Love Triangle".2xp

Galaxie 500s Ceremony is the one one I care about.

I did a Best Metal Joy Division Cover poll a while back however only a few people voted and none of the video links work anymore.

However my favorite cover won the poll:

Oddly enough I just jammed Troubegum by Therapy?, the album it is culled from, on a long drive yesterday. It's still one of my favorite albums ever, a grossly underappreciated gem.

Ha, so there was a thread for it the whole time. Nachtmystium did "The Eternal"!

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Sunday, 19 July 2020 23:29 (five years ago)

Listening to that now, actually! It came out after my thread so it wasn't included.\

I noticed that the Swans cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart left out the quote from Then She Kissed Me at the end. Always thought that made it feel so much more desolate on the original.

Stevolende, Monday, 20 July 2020 00:47 (five years ago)

Hm, interesting take on "Isolation".

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Monday, 20 July 2020 01:01 (five years ago)

I never really loved the arrangement of it on Closer so it's kind of refreshing to hear it done that way.

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Monday, 20 July 2020 01:06 (five years ago)

Has anyone ever covered "Insight"? I feel like that's a really underappreciated song, possibly because the production on Unknown Pleasures does it no favors. But in every live JD set I've heard, it's a highlight.
