Goldie's 'Mother' comes close at about 64 minutes or so

stevem (blueski), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of dance songs, I guess

Prince - Erotic City 7:24
Underworld - Born Slippy
DJ Shadow - What Does Your Soul Look Like, parts 1,2,3,4

sander, Friday, 22 November 2002 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

64 minutes is not close to 100!

and sander, re-read the question.

1. morton feldman - string quartet II (something like 4+ hours)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Cornershop did a 24 hr omline remix of their latest single -probably not very good though.

Does generative music count? That can go on indefinitely.

meirion john lewis (mei), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Vexations" by Satie: 1 page of music, to be played 840 times (~28 hours).

Now, answers NOT from the classical idiom...?

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, that's kind of difficult, as there are no ways (other than electronic) of recording something that's over 100 minutes in one piece. Anything with movements doesn't count.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

What about that John Oswald version of "Dark Star"? I haven't actually heard it, but isn't that one piece that's spread over 2 discs?

Chris Piuma, Friday, 22 November 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I have John Oswald's Grayfolded, and yes, it is spread over two discs.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Since the "dronerock" thread mentions it, let's throw in LaMonte Young's "The Well-Tuned Piano", which took 5 discs to release on CD.

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Friday, 22 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Karlheinz Stockhausen OWNS this thread.

nickalicious, Friday, 22 November 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I second "The Well-tuned Piano"

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 22 November 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 November 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

None of these are songs.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

''i third the well tuned piano. julio have you heard it? i reckon it'd be right up your street.''

I haven't though I'd love to.

sundar is correct of course but we got very silly earlier in the week didn't we?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It didn't print my "" code.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i.e. A closing html bracket that switches off the command "pedant". Gar.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

(And, yes, the Well-Tuned Piano is possibly my favourite piece of all time. It's too bad that it's so long though.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

julio i'll burn you a copy when i'm back in london.

(oh and sadly i haven't found any borbetomagus records; i am going to see them live soon though!!)

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Slightly offtopic:

Some people in Providence had been kicking around the idea of a "24 Hour Band." I think a space may even have been rented and fliers passed out. The basic idea was that people could bring instruments and amps to this warehouse space and improvise/write with other musicians 24 hour a day, and a four or eight track would be set up so that people can record their output.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 25 November 2002 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

''(oh and sadly i haven't found any borbetomagus records; i am going to see them live soon though!!)''

''julio i'll burn you a copy when i'm back in london.''

Thanks. very kind of you.

This is the song that doesn't end,
And it goes on and on my friend,
Some people started singing it not knowing what it was,
And they will keep on singing it forever just because...

Does anyone remember the music project that was co-started by one of the members of the Pogues that was supposed to last for...oh, say, 1000 years or so? I'm trying to remember the details here.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

well that reminds me: wasn't there some ambient track at the milenium dome, and wasn't it supposed to last 100 years.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

That might be the one!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, it's by Jem Finer, and it's called Longplayer. Click on the link halfway down for the official Longplayer site.
