Did Mark Goodier make his last-ever BBC broadcast today?

the pinefox, Friday, 22 November 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

He has been filling in on the Ken Bruce show (R2) but meanwhile his departure for Classic FM has been announced. Today John Inverdale, who followed him at 12 noon, said: Goodier, what will you do on Sunday [when he usually does the top 40]? you won't be working, for the first time ever! - which made me think: so this must be his last-ever BBC programme!

I think Goodier has been over-maligned.

lets hope that he's gone 4 evah!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 November 2002 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

he's always seemed like a nice bloke but he had an exeptionally grating voice and that's always a disadvantage for a disc jockey.

adam b (adam b), Friday, 22 November 2002 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Sweet mercy, wasn't it because he independantly produce(d) the Top 40 show (or something) the only reason that R1 didn't get rid of him long ago?
I've always found his hyuk-hyuking chortlesomeness very irritating so I won't miss him, though I'm not sure about Jo Whiley as a replacement.

DavidM (DavidM), Saturday, 23 November 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Jo Whiley? Oh fuck no...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 23 November 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Whiley's doing the Top 40? God help us. I assumed it'd be Scott Mills ...

I assumed Goodier would build his career at Radio 2 from here. I'm baffled that he's going to Classic FM - he never seemed to have the "bringing high culture to the masses in a very cheesy way" ethos of Mike Read and Simon Bates, who both ended up there. He never even had a classical feature on his show like Alan Freeman (in the 70s) and Gary Davies (in the early 90s) did.

Still, Goodier really impressed me aged 10 making the Cocteau Twins' "Iceblink Luck" his single of the week, quite radical for Radio 1 drivetime 12 years ago.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 23 November 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin, I thought you must be at least 47.

Venga, Saturday, 23 November 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If the rationale is no woman has ever done the top 40 before, why not pick Mary-Anne Hobbs instead? At least then every single band would be prefaced by "THE MIGHTY..."

Wouldn't that just sound great?

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 23 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

lets hope the mighty mighty bosstones dont get in there

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

No, that'd be fantastic. Her brain'd kick into a looping kind of things and she'd fill up the entire timeslot just going "MIGHTY, MIghty, MIGHTY, MIGHTY" till the emergency tape kicks in or she asphyxiates cos she just can't stress MIGHTY enough...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Which'd sound an awful lot better than Whiley trying (failing) to lay the diss on Las Ketchup.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

oddly enough Venga, someone on usenet just wondered whether I'd been listening to Kenny Everett on Radio 1 when he was sacked in 1970; I had to point out that I was born 10 years later

it is the curse of being a self-taught historian, I suppose

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 24 November 2002 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

After hearing it, I'm glad Jo Whiley isn't doing it permanently. I think it's Chris Moyles next week.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Whiley was almost exactly as smug as I'd imagined she'd be. Then again, Moyles is hardly gonna be any better...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Whiley and Moyles should have a child together. So we can gas it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

dom's 'opinion' was bought to you by 'coldplay' the world's grebtest rock n'roll band.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Whiley sounded too partisan. The Top 40 should be the last bastion of avuncular Reithian values. Just the facts, ma'am - don't tell me how good The Music are, especially not when you're about to undermine your argument by playing them!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

john sargent (sp?) shd do the top40

zebedee, Monday, 25 November 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It should be hosted by Jimmy Young, as you well know.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a bit ashamed to say it... but I quite like The Music's single.

I think I'd do the top 40 quite well. I need a job, anyway. I think I'll apply...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i want norm4n ph4y!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Westwood is the only man who should preent the top 40 with his calm, laidback style.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow - people actually *responded* to this thread.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
The thing is, though - he keeps coming back.

He is a gentler a PopMaster quizmaster than is Ken Bruce.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ken Bruce is malevolently rubbish.
