TRL End of Summer Countdown 2000

to my knowledge this was the second year that an end-of-summer special was shown on trl -- i believe it, and most of that summer's daytime programming, was filmed in san diego.

i actually have bizarrely vivid memories of seeing many of these videos that summer on mtv (and vh1, which i would sometimes flip to). there are some that i had completely forgotten about but now remember having heard, and a few that i still don't really recall even after attempting to jog the memory a bit.

what's your favorite? (song/video/whatever)

The show wasn't called "Total request live" yet but they did one of these the last weekend of august '98 for sure. The only videos I remember are "Flagpole Sitta" and maybe Usher "My Way."

billstevejim, Thursday, 20 August 2020 07:57 (four years ago)

Also i went with deftones for this

billstevejim, Thursday, 20 August 2020 07:57 (four years ago)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 10:10 (four years ago)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 10:12 (four years ago)

Can't read this list without waves of school-age misery crashing in on me. Though "Doesn't Really Matter" is pretty much awesome enough to cancel that out.

geoffreyess, Thursday, 20 August 2020 13:00 (four years ago)

"Say My Name" for sure. Lots of dross here.

A White, White Gay (cryptosicko), Thursday, 20 August 2020 16:59 (four years ago)

God this whole era of pop music was so bad.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 20 August 2020 17:02 (four years ago)

oops, I... that thong thong thong thong thong

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Thursday, 20 August 2020 17:04 (four years ago)

Voted for "Change" since I actively enjoy it, has some nice atmosphere and intensity and is p distinctive imo. The Eminem song is OK, I guess, and I remember liking Destiny's Child OK at the time. Otherwise, not my thing, for the most part.

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Thursday, 20 August 2020 17:25 (four years ago)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 18:09 (four years ago)

I thought Dream’s “He Loves U Not” would be here, but apparently it was a fall 2000 jam

beamish13, Thursday, 20 August 2020 18:13 (four years ago)

I do look back on this era with fondness but...

13. Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff
12. Jessica Simpson - I Think I'm In Love With You
11. Kid Rock - American Bad Ass

Get the point? Good, let's dance with nunchaku. (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 August 2020 18:26 (four years ago)

Temporary Erogenous Zone (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 August 2020 18:41 (four years ago)

Country Grammar, Adam’s Song, Change, Party Up, Big Pimpin’ in that order.

Everything else:
Meh

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 20 August 2020 18:42 (four years ago)

Btw I really like the p4k review of country grammar. Doesn’t really talk much about the album itself but about the factors and history behind its success: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/nelly-country-grammar/

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 20 August 2020 21:06 (four years ago)

i may still be fresh off poll high from janet, but this is easily "doesn't really matter"

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Thursday, 20 August 2020 21:25 (four years ago)

just had a vivid flashback of a method man/limp bizkit collab with a TRL-charting video in which they fought with samurai swords, mercifully can’t remember how it sounds

3:10 to yur mom (voodoo chili), Friday, 21 August 2020 00:18 (four years ago)

n 2 gether now. a classic. overshadowed by the success of break stuff

Temporary Erogenous Zone (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 August 2020 00:34 (four years ago)

UP IN HERE

J. Sam, Friday, 21 August 2020 00:57 (four years ago)

Xp not nearly as bad as I feared lol, no nu-metal, just a boom-bap track with a decent primo beat and meth verse.

trapped out the barndo (crüt), Friday, 21 August 2020 01:24 (four years ago)

most of these songs I never want to hear again

trapped out the barndo (crüt), Friday, 21 August 2020 01:25 (four years ago)

this is an era of pop that i cherish

38. Lil' Kim - No Matter What They Say

this may have been the first lil kim song i heard. i remember liking her more than i did the song, tho the amusing line "if i was you i'd hate me too" stuck around in my head for years. my cousin had her album (fairly edgy for our age) so i got to hear more soon enough, including what i now recognize as an all-time classic "how many licks"

36. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

i think the dreamcast-aesthetic video actually tricked me into liking the song

20. Destiny's Child - Say My Name

a little perplexed by this song's presence on this countdown -- it started breaking at r&b stations in like december/january, and while it took time to cross over to pop stations, it didn't take that long! i can't imagine it would have been late to gain traction on mtv given that "bills bills bills" had been quite a big video there, so maybe it just stuck around on the countdown forever? i will have to look into this because apparently i am incapable of leaving trivial curiosities like this alone

11. Kid Rock - American Bad Ass

i recall my brother purchasing this cd from a walmart when we were on vacation

7. BBMak - Back Here

the best boyband song on this list actually! i remember seeing it a ton on vh1 as well

among the britney/christina-not-yet-xtina/etc. set on this list, my favorite was and is jessica simpson's "i think i'm in love with you", tho mandy moore's voice sounds lovely on "i wanna be with you". (i understand why the "lucky" video was so big, but it's a lesser britney single imo.) mandy hosted a show on mtv that summer! and so did sisqo!

what fascinates me about this era is that quite a few of these songs were making essentially no noise on (american) radio yet still felt like fairly significant phenoms just from the exposure they got from this channel alone. like, not just that kid rock song but also the hanson one. (also, i had totally forgotten that p.o.d. got big on mtv well before "alive" and "youth of the nation")

some of these videos seemed like events -- i remember "music" being heavily hyped for example, and many premiered on mtv's making the video program and would immediately find themselves on the following trl episode

dyl, Saturday, 22 August 2020 07:17 (four years ago)

after all that i'm still not sure what to vote for. perhaps nelly, but i'll sit on it a little longer

dyl, Saturday, 22 August 2020 07:17 (four years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 26 August 2020 00:01 (four years ago)

are we voting for song or video?

Thoia Thoing, Maryland (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 00:06 (four years ago)

I guess the answer to both is "Big Pimpin"

Thoia Thoing, Maryland (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 00:07 (four years ago)

'Change', duh.

pomentiful (pomenitul), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 00:10 (four years ago)

maybe it just stuck around on the countdown forever?

i believe so

whiney on the moon (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 00:36 (four years ago)

"Back Here" is dope. Probably my 2nd favorite here after "Change."

System, Thursday, 27 August 2020 00:01 (four years ago)

The correct song won, but I'm gonna assume many of the songs that got votes were because you a lot of you were 12-15 years old at the time.

A White, White Gay (cryptosicko), Thursday, 27 August 2020 17:17 (four years ago)

It’s true, I voted “Oops!... I Did It Again”. It’s also true that if I would have had any children they might have been 12-15 years old then.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Thursday, 27 August 2020 17:24 (four years ago)

I already regret my cranky old man post from nineteen minutes ago. My apologies.
