I'm with Whiney and listening to it a second time (lol) he seems not entirely serious BUT! It was a single! From a major label in 1992! Which means the record company thought this could get radio/MTV play! And nothing about the video or the packaging/artwork of the single and the album it came from give an indication that this is given with a wink or meant to to be some kind of novelty song. If this had come out after, say, "Detachable Penis" or "Push th' Little Daisies" it might be different but 1992 college rock was all deadly serious.

okay listening to the New Radicals album in full for the first time since I was maybe 14, right away on the first track "Mother We Just Can't Get Enough" you can totally tell it's the same guy as "The Truth", so many baffling decisions at the end, it's a way better song though

Oh yeah, the album has so many wtf lines, like “We made a porno tape for coke— I hear I’m big in Japan!”

first three songs actually all end in really weird ways. "I Hope I Didn't Just Give Away the Ending" he's doing what, an Isaac Brock impression? and yes the lyrics are all wtf. he's such a weirdo. taking all these great songs and stepping on them. I mean "Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You" is such a great power pop song and then it ends "it's so wonderful...it makes me feel like crying...crying...crying...DYING...DYING!!!" and the last song was "I Don't Want To Die Anymore"!! this dude really was one of a kind.

never listened to this album before and wow... this is nuts. almost makes The Truth sound normal in a way. just from "Mother..." and "I Hope I Didn't Just Give Away the Ending," this is like someone skipped straight past the tidal wave smash debut, to the coke-fueled maximalist personal idiosyncracy version of a New Jersey. it's wrapped up in an airy prettiness you usually don't encounter on those types of albums but there's NO filter on this guy!

obviously wouldn't have gotten this the first time around but the chorus on "Mother" is just Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough"....here comes the lawsuit baby!!!
