Let's poll... RYM's Top 50 Albums of All Time

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:17 (four years ago)

this is boring as hell but somehow i like it better than the other two

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:17 (four years ago)

because its based on critics rather than users?

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:19 (four years ago)

because its a very very boring list with some bands not even best album in the list imo

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:20 (four years ago)

this is slightly more boring than the other two lists, therefore it's the worst.

lol at Is This It being one of the best 50 albums ever, it was such a disappointment after the EP and has not aged well either.

好 now 烧烤 (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:20 (four years ago)

One jazz album

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:21 (four years ago)

Without checking, is it 'Kind of Blue'?

好 now 烧烤 (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:22 (four years ago)

This one almost reads like the RS list.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:22 (four years ago)

xp yep

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:22 (four years ago)

of course

好 now 烧烤 (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:22 (four years ago)

blue lines is ??? unless this is based entirely on contemporaneous reviews, who the heck has rated that one over mezzanine in the last 20 years

ciderpress, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:24 (four years ago)

I like Blue Lines a lot but I remember finding it weird that it was MA's check-marked album on AMG.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:25 (four years ago)

I'm not sure if they use critics reviews as well as year end and best of lists

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:35 (four years ago)

Here's their alltime songs list
http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/year/alltime_songs.htm

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:54 (four years ago)

I think acclaimedmusic only uses listicle results. (Critic reviews are metacritic's thing.) So if a now-dated-sounding record appeared on lots of end-of-year lists 20-25 years ago and failed to show up on any subsequent decade lists or whatever, it will likely still place really well.

billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:55 (four years ago)

trying to narrow down a shortlist... which of these albums has most ODB features?

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:56 (four years ago)

This list reads like a specific college student's CD collection circa 2005

Scam Likely (morrisp), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:59 (four years ago)

xp

oh ok, cheers!

Is there a metacritic all time list?

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:59 (four years ago)

haha

https://www.metacritic.com/browse/albums/score/metascore/all/filtered

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:05 (four years ago)

that alltime list is certainly different to the others

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:09 (four years ago)

xp 12-15 year olds love many of these records.

billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:11 (four years ago)

This list reads like a specific college student's CD collection circa 2005

Oh, that's interesting. I was struggling to imagine anyone whose favourite albums would be these albums, in this order, while I could easily do that with the RYM list.

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Monday, 21 September 2020 16:38 (four years ago)

The RYM list looks more diverse to me, at a glance (more rap, some metal, etc.); the above looks more like a "these are the albums you need to own" list for someone who's not deeply into music.

Scam Likely (morrisp), Monday, 21 September 2020 16:41 (four years ago)

The Rolling Stones

I agree. That's why I think it's hard for me to imagine this as an individual's collection.

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Monday, 21 September 2020 16:56 (four years ago)

I guess I haven't known many people who care enough about music to seek out these albums but not enough to develop an individual taste or curiosity that departs from that?

I'm guessing your student listening was different to most students, lol

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 17:26 (four years ago)

the people seeking them out are 12-15.

billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 17:29 (four years ago)

That I could maybe see.

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Monday, 21 September 2020 17:30 (four years ago)

I think older more like 18-21

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 17:35 (four years ago)

I'm guessing your student listening was different to most students, lol

It was different from both lists but I'm capable of observing other people. Two other people have said on the RYM thread that they knew people whose tastes looked like that list fwiw.

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Monday, 21 September 2020 17:40 (four years ago)

Wait, these are not the top 50 albums I see here: http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/061024/1948-02a.htm

London Calling is #10 on that list, for instance, and Is This It falls outside the top 50. Ditto Doolittle. Where was this list from?

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Monday, 21 September 2020 17:58 (four years ago)

I used this one which is the link on the main page!

http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/year/alltime_albums.htm

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 18:05 (four years ago)

Weird. Is the other one an older list?

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Monday, 21 September 2020 18:08 (four years ago)

No idea

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 18:10 (four years ago)

yes, it was. pre 2015 apparently

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 10:47 (four years ago)

So is the new revised RS top 50 better than this?

Oor Neechy, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 12:51 (four years ago)

two weeks pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 00:01 (four years ago)

I like at least one track from every one of these records. Best is Forever Changes over Astral Weeks.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 03:09 (four years ago)

I voted forever changes

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 14:01 (four years ago)

Until Metallica starts showing up on these things, I always am the one Ramones voter.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 14:03 (four years ago)

otm. it was a few years before that but yeah in college i definitely picked up a of a good portion of these as cheapo used discs, lol

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 14:46 (four years ago)

voted for exile

covidiot wind (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 14:47 (four years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
