Dark Entries record label

Probably long overdue a thread dedicated to this label. 250+ releases and still going strong, each record done with a lot of love and attention to quality. Still pumping out new stuff and a back catalogue bulging with gems, it's an education in itself digging through it all. What are your favoutire things they've put out?

Very worthy label to home in on: Second Layer, impLOG, Van Kaye + Ignit, Thomas Leer, ADN' Ckrystall, Patrick Cowley, Lena Platonos and Solid Space are what are immediately standing out/coming to mind for me.

call mr zbow that's my name that name again is mr zbow (Craig D.), Wednesday, 23 September 2020 12:28 (four years ago) link

Another personal highlight for me was when Josh Cheon was a guest on my fave radio show:

Oh cool, I need to go back and listen to that. I do like that Bones has been caning the Lives Of Angels record on his show recently, I adore that band! Need to try again with Lena as she's quite clicked with me. Do realise how foundational she is for the label though

Just skimming the discogs page, will try to have a proper look later, but these are all faves and I should probably get round to buying these at some point (I have the Rubella Ballet one on CD):

Neon Judgement - Early Tapes
Jane & Jeff Hudson - Flesh
Los Microwaves - Life After Breakfast
Xymox - Subsequent Pleasures
Rubella Ballet - Ballet Bag

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 23 September 2020 12:58 (four years ago) link

Ha, some longterm dwellers in my wantlist there! I have that Jane & Jeff Hudson though, incredible stuff.

kites aren't fun (NickB), Wednesday, 23 September 2020 13:26 (four years ago) link

Don't think I'd listened to Los Microwaves before - fun record!

Huh, I've got a fair few things from their catalogue (Platonos, Cowley etc) but never thought to actually start digging further - you might just be sending me down a rabbit hole here.

emil.y, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 14:19 (four years ago) link

Algebra Suicide as well, and the Dark Day reissue, lots of great stuff, I'll be back when I think of more

sleeve, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 14:22 (four years ago) link

Things I've listened to today that are great: X Ray Pop, Art & Technique, Stratis

emil.y, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 14:32 (four years ago) link

Never heard of any of those!

kites aren't fun (NickB), Wednesday, 23 September 2020 14:41 (four years ago) link

dark entries rules, they reissued "tarzan loves the summer night"

adam, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 14:45 (four years ago) link

hell yeah, they reissued Victrola’s “Maritime Tatami” as well

v. important reissue label!

brimstead, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 17:16 (four years ago) link

So many Italo reissues.

The Tom Ware album they reissued is really cool too

brimstead, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 17:20 (four years ago) link

Ströer Duo ‎– Fluchtweg Madagaskar is a huge huge reissue they did, highly recommended

Bongo Jongus, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 18:27 (four years ago) link

oh and the excellent Cyrnai reissues as well! Search the "To Subtle-Drive" expanded 2LP

that shit was IMPOSSIBLE to find on the OG cassettes back in the 80s

sleeve, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 18:39 (four years ago) link

Yeah they really seem to have figured out a sharp aesthetic that crosses between perceived sonic borders very easily (and thus trashing said unneeded borders to start with).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 18:47 (four years ago) link

Also Josh seems to be strongly committed to doing the best for his artists. Seems to be a model label all round really. Excited that I haven't heard even half the things you lot are mentioning, gonna throw myself into that stuff like a mouse in a cheesecake factory

kites aren't fun (NickB), Wednesday, 23 September 2020 19:04 (four years ago) link

same here tbh, there's a lot upthread that I have never even heard of

sleeve, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 19:10 (four years ago) link

Sleeve, do you know the Lives of Angels stuff? Put out one obscure cassette in 1983 that got picked up by Fire in 1986 - they sound like a weird cross between between the Velvets, Felt, Spacemen 3, the Feelies and Galaxie 500, very mellow and softly psychedelic but with that whole motorik thrum going on. Think you might like them?

kites aren't fun (NickB), Wednesday, 23 September 2020 19:21 (four years ago) link

Actually that song sounds like it could have come out during the glory days of Flying Nun. Wonder if Tom D knew them?

kites aren't fun (NickB), Wednesday, 23 September 2020 19:27 (four years ago) link

never heard of that either, thread delivers

Yeah I just listened to this the other night! Really interesting record.

brimstead, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 21:43 (four years ago) link

That reissue led me to find this insane PBS soundtrack style balearic record (non Dark Entries) that one of the Stroer bros did

Bongo Jongus, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 21:54 (four years ago) link

yknow it didn’t occur to me til now that it’s one of the strouer bros that did excellent “don’t stay for breakfast”.. iz that what you posted, bongo, can’t see the embed for some reason

brimstead, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 23:21 (four years ago) link

I mean, I just discovered the Stroher bros record this week.

brimstead, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 23:22 (four years ago) link

It was the Ray Lynch track Cooking Til it's Hot, which I see is on a new Music From Memory comp as well

Bongo Jongus, Thursday, 24 September 2020 01:33 (four years ago) link

Hey don't forget the great work they've done w/ the Robert Rental and Thomas Leer reissues, all essential!

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 24 September 2020 02:29 (four years ago) link

excellent point, I have most of those already so it's easy to overlook but Private Plane and 1979 are essential

scrolling thru their Discogs, man so much other good stuff - Nagamatzu, Crash Course In Science EPs, Severed Heads, Konstruktivits, 3 Teens Kill 4, Intense Molecular Activity...

sleeve, Thursday, 24 September 2020 02:58 (four years ago) link

also, WTF is this, I must have it as a huge Konstruktivits fan

and some kinda posthumous/never-released Dark Day LP I have also never heard of until just now

sleeve, Thursday, 24 September 2020 03:00 (four years ago) link

I nearly fainted when I heard about them doing a 12" of Private Plane. And yes, that Rental/Wallis is great!

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 24 September 2020 03:40 (four years ago) link

I love this label and I'm totally not surprised this is a NickB thread

boxedjoy, Thursday, 24 September 2020 10:32 (four years ago) link

had another look and these are all great too (most already mentioned, but in the unlikely event that my endorsement matters):

Second Layer - World Of Rubber
Van Kaye & Ignit - A Slight Delay
Solid Space - Space Museum
Severed Heads - Clean
Neon Judgement - Cockerill Sombre 12"

I haven't heard all the Ski Patrol stuff but I like the one single I've heard which is on the comp they put out

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 24 September 2020 10:39 (four years ago) link

Ha thank you boxedjoy! :)

I really need to listen to that Second Layer pronto, been a fan of Borland since I was teen but somehow I don't know that stuff at all

kites aren't fun (NickB), Thursday, 24 September 2020 10:53 (four years ago) link

also, WTF is this, I must have it as a huge Konstruktivits fan

https://www.discogs.com/Robert-Rental-Glenn-Wallis-Untitled-LP/master/1278918

It's basically stoned LoFi jam sessions recorded at Robert Rental's place in Battersea with Glenn on Wasp and Robert on guitar.

BTW New Konstruktivists LP coming later this year...

Stop the tape I got spittle all over my moustache. (Talcum Mucker), Thursday, 24 September 2020 15:38 (four years ago) link

do they also have that spot in SF -- RS 94109 -- or is that just "Dark Entries adjacent"?

the Ghostwriters stuff is being reissued, theyre cool records but i dunno how i feel about it. kinda icky really. i don't really know the full story of charles cohen's misdemeanours and i've never really wanted to. i just stopped listening to his music when that whole thing blew up.

in less contentious news (and also tbh i hate knocking this fine label), i'm just catching up with the Doc Sleep record from earlier this year and it's great if you like your techno a wee bit woozy:

i feel kind of icky about the Ghostwriters stuff too. i was an uber fan but just couldn't listen anymore, though in recent times i have played this one a few times. it's just so damned beautiful!

I was on the organizing committee for a music festival where he performed shortly before the “incident”. He was a very nice guy to everyone involved… I remember commenting on the time about how he wore a Cosby sweater … anyway. I like this label too.

i see proceeds from the reissues will go to SOSA (Safe from Online Sex Abuse). i figured Dark Entries might do something like this.

stirmonster, Friday, 11 October 2024 16:52 (two months ago) link

From what I remember at the time, he basically got caught in a sting operation by Philly PD with a cop posing as an underage guy. Did he do other stuff that he never got for? How do you feel about your TG/Coil records?

sarahell, Sunday, 13 October 2024 05:02 (two months ago) link

should they be cancelled next? ok

StanM, Sunday, 13 October 2024 06:43 (two months ago) link

my very cowardly approach to such questions is that there are approximately 33,000,000 other amazing records out there that i could be listening to instead where i wouldnt have to wrestle with these uncomfortable dilemmas or do homework on just how much of an awful person someone was. and i probably miss out on some cool art in the process, but like i said, im not short of other options. always interesting to hear other peoples opinions on this though, and it is good to hear that josh is obviously taking it seriously, acknowledging there are issues, recognising that there are real world victims out there, and trying to navigate a course through it all that sits well with his own conscience. wouldnt want to judge him - or anyone here - on this cos none of this affects me personally at all. all i can say really is that he seems to be a good guy at heart and charles cohen seems dodgy af. and then i will go and listen to the lives of angels album instead

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Sunday, 13 October 2024 08:47 (two months ago) link

How do you feel about your TG/Coil records?

I feel great about them and if my apartment caught fire the latter's would be some of the first items I'd grab before evacuating

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 13 October 2024 11:14 (two months ago) link

Just you know, both Cohen and Sleazy had similar proclivities… I am not coming from a pro-cancel place… just one of them got caught

sarahell, Sunday, 13 October 2024 15:33 (two months ago) link

I've heard some rumors about Sleazy, yeah. I'd probably feel differently if it'd gone down the way it did with Cohen, especially since Sleazy's music has meant far more to me than Cohen's. I know it's definitely morally questionable to feign ignorance in an attempt to absolve a hero of what are likely unspeakable acts, but I try not to think about it too much.

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 13 October 2024 16:36 (two months ago) link

the cohen stuff happened many many many years after the ghostwriters releases, if that matters to anyone

it's a thing for sure. ever read any samuel delany sex scenes? i can't and won't ever defend it .. it's a thing with a long history and it's probably less black and white than most realize. weird to think that young men are generally less mature than young women, yet like the posts above demonstrate the power dynamic isn't as questioned. patriarchy in action, eating itself...
