the early '90s "DIY handpainted" cover art aesthetic

this sort of fits - but I'm thinking specifically of that "puffy paint" look...

if not for that ugly-a$s logo, that Blues Traveler cover would be really nice!

(the graffiti aesthetic is sort of a whole different thing, though...)

Dino Jr. really rode hard for this aesthetic.

yeah Bug (1988) could be ground zero:

(^that "Bubble & Scrape" cover is sort of what happens to the "Lull" cover (#2 in my OP) after a serious burnout/freakout)

Scam Likely (morrisp), Thursday, 24 September 2020 20:48 (four years ago) link

obvious 80s precedents to this were sonic youth (especially 'evol') and several meat puppets albums

kites aren't fun (NickB), Thursday, 24 September 2020 20:56 (four years ago) link

it definitely beats the "untreated iphone photo with no band name or album title" aesthetic

The Smashing Pumpkins ep that starts this thread off reminds me of Jellyfish's Bellybutton. Itdoesn't quite belong itt but I wanted to get that off my chest anyway.

funny, the De La Soul cover occurred to me as I was going to bed last night... it’s def in the realm of what I was going for.

Scam Likely (morrisp), Friday, 25 September 2020 15:01 (four years ago) link

I feel like there’s at least one more big example and I’ve been searching, but can’t find it.

Scam Likely (morrisp), Friday, 25 September 2020 15:04 (four years ago) link

De La is an 80s album and I think that aesthetic is way more Keith Haring derived than the amateur used CD bin vibe

I like this thread idea, so many of these in the 90s

RHCP's 'By The Way' is a great example of someone adopting this exact aesthetic way after it was cool. Like ten years too late guys!

kites aren't fun (NickB), Friday, 25 September 2020 16:30 (four years ago) link

xxp well, it’s ’89, when this aesthetic was in full “flower” (sorry) – and it has that “kids who grew up in the ’70s using hippie-style graphics” vibe. I guess there is a little Haring in there, too

Scam Likely (morrisp), Friday, 25 September 2020 16:32 (four years ago) link

(much as I hate to give a certain resident floridian the satisfaction of using the term "pappy bush interzone," I do sort of think of '88-'91/'92 as embodying this particular look)

Scam Likely (morrisp), Friday, 25 September 2020 16:38 (four years ago) link

I mentioned the Meat Puppets upthread but thinking about it I feel there's a whole bunch of 3rd tier records that came out in the mid 80s on SST and Homestead that have this look - Antietam 'Music From Elba', Das Damen 'Jupiter Eye', releases by Alter Natives, Phantom Tollbooth, Gone, Happy Flowers etc - all part of the whole DIY look that went a little more overground when grunge broke. But you could also trace it back to 'Music From Big Pink', Dylan's 'Self Portrait' and 'Planet Waves'

kites aren't fun (NickB), Friday, 25 September 2020 17:08 (four years ago) link

just think 3 feet high looks too pro graphic design

The Cure had some pretty ugly examples of this, when was the last time they even put out an album with a non-terrible cover?

kites aren't fun (NickB), Friday, 25 September 2020 18:32 (four years ago) link

I think of Meat Puppets and Minutemen as ground zero. SST's heydey def got it rolling.

the ones I tried to post above were Swell, 41. I cannot for the life of me get images to post on ILX anymore, does that BBcode conversion thing work correctly?

that didn't work

akm, Friday, 25 September 2020 21:42 (four years ago) link

does that BBcode conversion thing work correctly?

yes, you just aren't posting the right URL

a good test is to paste the URL you are trying to post on an Incognito window and if it just shows the image, it should work

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Friday, 25 September 2020 21:43 (four years ago) link

you are posting a link to the page the image is on, not the image itself

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Friday, 25 September 2020 21:44 (four years ago) link

If you're using Chrome, if you right click on the image, there should be an option "Open image in new tab". Click that, then in the new tab, copy the URL

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Friday, 25 September 2020 21:46 (four years ago) link

yes but how do you wrap the img tags? regular < > doesn't work, and neither, apparently, does the [ ].

akm, Friday, 25 September 2020 22:05 (four years ago) link

[ ] should work, if you're linking to the right thing

Sometimes I test here first: photobucket direct image link test

Scam Likely (morrisp), Friday, 25 September 2020 22:06 (four years ago) link

yeah I think the issue with some images (like discogs hosted ones) is they have all kinds of weird parameters in them etc because they're likely being transformed by the site's CDN.

akm, Friday, 25 September 2020 22:10 (four years ago) link

The ones I've been posting here are actually from discogs; I didn't think they would work b/c the URLs are so funky, but they do...

You guys know about the "Show Formatting Help" button below the reply box, right?

I can't copy and paste the text here because the tags will disappear and nothing will be any more clear lol.
