the late great, Friday, 9 October 2020 16:11 (four years ago)

lot of good stuff here though

the late great, Friday, 9 October 2020 16:13 (four years ago)

probably peshay for me, but so many choices. need to relisten to it today.

scanner darkly, Friday, 9 October 2020 16:34 (four years ago)

Palmskin Productions, just edging out Peshay and Grantby.

does it look like i'm here (jon123), Friday, 9 October 2020 16:50 (four years ago)

Zimbabwe Legit for me.

Tough choice between Max 404 & Dust Brothers for me. I have to admit I never warmed to this as much as 2A tbqh... :-(

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 9 October 2020 17:08 (four years ago)

Shadow's Zimbabwe Legit Mix has the Idris Muhammad track that opens Paul's Boutique but with some questionable scratching but thankfully transitions into something more palatable, never understood the appeal of how that became his big calling card.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 9 October 2020 17:10 (four years ago)

is there any 90s hip hop scratch routine that is not somewhat questionable, 20-30 years later?

the late great, Friday, 9 October 2020 17:57 (four years ago)

twig bud vs street mix of bug in the bassbin vs object orient

I’m gonna get eggs thrown at me but I was listening to DJ Spooky’s riddam warfare for the first time in ages recently... and there’s some really nice scratching on there that just sounds eerie and uncanny and not all “look ma wikity wikity”

brimstead, Friday, 9 October 2020 18:14 (four years ago)

to answer my own question, the scratching in the second breakdown of "spectral arc" (about 5:10) is perfectly proportioned

twig bud is peter baby ford iirc and while his contribution to this set is okay his contribution to the excursions series is some of the most out-there off-kilter jazzy breakbeat downtempo techno ever, a real rebirth of cool

the late great, Friday, 9 October 2020 18:45 (four years ago)

this is an incredible sequence of tracks

Peshay - 'The Real Thing'
Dillinja - 'In the Mood'
Roni Size & DJ Krust - 'Tribetoon'
Source Direct - 'The Silent Witness'
As One - 'The Counterpoint'
Innerzone Orchestra - 'Bug in the Bassbin'
Black Dog Productions - 'Object Orient'
Special Forces - 'Trilogy'
Max 404 - 'Quiddity'
Zimbabwe Legit - 'Shadow's Legitimate Mix'

the late great, Friday, 9 October 2020 18:46 (four years ago)

i'd include Palmskin Productions in that but remove Object Orient - great track but always broke the flow for me here (or maybe because i listened to Bytes a lot).

Part B >>> Part A.

scanner darkly, Friday, 9 October 2020 19:03 (four years ago)

Palmskin Productions for me. That song is so epic and unique. There are so many great songs on this comp, but that one ALWAYS made me stop and pay attention.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 9 October 2020 19:13 (four years ago)

oh i always meant to do this one after i did the 2a poll

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 9 October 2020 19:23 (four years ago)

yeah i like the twig bud ep too, especially "day off".. "swiss air"'s barely there soup and limping beat strikes a really unique atmosphere.. reminds me of the first two REQ albums (anybody else like those?)

brimstead, Friday, 9 October 2020 19:56 (four years ago)

you know i do and his third one that came out on warp
is great too ("sketchbook" iirc?)

i did own sketchbook at one point and all i can remember is the gamelan-ish bits but damn that track is right up my alley there. superb murkiness.

brimstead, Friday, 9 October 2020 20:50 (four years ago)

😘

the late great, Friday, 9 October 2020 21:34 (four years ago)

I have to go for Special Forces - 'Trilogy' - Had Photek attempted house beats before this track?

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 9 October 2020 21:39 (four years ago)

The vinyl of this comp sounds like shit, btw.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 9 October 2020 21:40 (four years ago)

xp i don't think so but he sure nailed it on that one

the late great, Friday, 9 October 2020 21:45 (four years ago)

i'm not surprised, i have two copies of the original headz on vinyl + a royalties overdue and they all sound pretty bad, even given the general difference in pressing and engineering standards between 90s dance vinyl and current dance vinyl

the late great, Friday, 9 October 2020 21:46 (four years ago)

I'm trying to remember how I even found out about the Headz comps. CMJ, maybe? I know I had to special order them and it was (at that time) by far the most expensive album purchase I'd ever made, so I must've been relatively confident about doing so. It definitely paid off.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Saturday, 10 October 2020 03:32 (four years ago)

I had a really beat up copy of 2A on vinyl but it sounded pretty good. spun the DJ Wally track at the only real DJ gig I ever did and it really popped.

brimstead, Saturday, 10 October 2020 05:36 (four years ago)

i'm thinking maybe somebody came over to the flat you always hung out in, having just bought it on vinyl, and removed it it from his carrier bag kind of reverentially and explained to you what it was and why you needed to buy it.

the late great, Saturday, 10 October 2020 06:01 (four years ago)
