Dirty South, eaaaaaaaasy

Neanderthal, Saturday, 24 October 2020 19:56 (four years ago)

Shout out to the Rev, who tried this once before with little response. I think we can do better now.
COME AND POLL SOME SOUL FOOD, WELL WELL

This is an exceptionally difficult album for me to pick a favorite track from... it's kind of hard to pick a LEAST favorite track!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 24 October 2020 19:59 (four years ago)

does have incredible consistency in its favor.

Dirty South edges it for me cos that's the song that made me knew I was hearing a classic.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 24 October 2020 20:00 (four years ago)

It's possible this is among my top twenty all-time LPs now that I think about it; some of the best songwriting, flow and unassailable production of any rap album ever.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 24 October 2020 20:03 (four years ago)

was just talking about “cell therapy” in another thread, such a uniquely haunting record. this is an obvious classic record with many choices, but it’ll be hard for me to pick anything else.

glengarry gary beers (voodoo chili), Saturday, 24 October 2020 20:55 (four years ago)

yeah "Cell Therapy" is something else, and Cool Breeze on "Dirty South" is incredible. Feel like I'm neglecting the rest of the album because those two are so stunning.

JoeStork, Saturday, 24 October 2020 21:04 (four years ago)

I might lean into "Guess Who". So honest and painfully personal.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 24 October 2020 21:31 (four years ago)

there's really no bad choice here

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 07:42 (four years ago)

guess ill go with i didnt ask to come... or maybe sesame street (i think my fav beat on here)... or maybe thought process.

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 07:47 (four years ago)

'thought process' easily.

this album set the table for atliens masterfully. put my expectations through the stratosphere. ceelo was an immense talent and just completely stole the show. his verse that starts off "first of all, i stand a little more than five feet tall, but we can still brawl, n/gga i ain't scared at all" was like O_O holy shit!

was always a little annoyed that the full version of 'blood' wasn't on the album. i mean, it's a little long, but i think it still would've been a highlight.

been trying to pick my LEAST favorite off this album and i guess it's maybe "The Coming" but even that is fucking great

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 16:57 (four years ago)

anyway, let's do still standing after this.
what you know about the banana and mayonnaise

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:06 (four years ago)

i gather goodie never got real market love north of the mason dixon but i remember working at a media store in middle tennessee when World Party came out and there was a mad rush on release day to buy copies of the CD out of the cardboard cut-out standup of the guys in the now-super-problematic cover costumes. dang i wish i had managed to steal that promo.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:10 (four years ago)

i know it's too early to become cynical negative guy, but i'm just going to say it: every goodie album after this was a crushing disappointment.

i have a hard time listening to Cee-Lo's verses as much after his sexual assault charges/terrible comments.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:42 (four years ago)

Still Standing is great I think (though I wish one verse was excised from “Fly Away”)

JoeStork, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:44 (four years ago)

I love "The Experience"

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:47 (four years ago)

still standing had about five solid tracks.

I will argue that Still Standing is (nearly) as good as Soul Food.
World Party, One Monkey, Age Against all have lots of good tracks.
I once dressed up in a tiger suit for an MTV promo with Cee-Lo and Dangermouse at the height of "Crazy"; I have the same issues with him since those suits went public.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 18:02 (four years ago)

The Experience
Black Ice
Beautiful Skin
Ghetto-ology
Distant Wilderness
Greeny Green
I Refuse Limitation
Still Standing

all pretty great imo! And I'd include "Fly Away" if Khujo's verse didn't bum me out so much.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 18:03 (four years ago)

I love all those songs, besides which They Don't Dance No Mo might be my favorite track on the album and you didn't even mention it!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 18:05 (four years ago)

oh yeah that one isn't an immediate standout for me but it's good, i like most of the songs i didn't mention!

JoeStork, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 18:06 (four years ago)

and let us not forget the secret VIP on World Party

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 18:06 (four years ago)

actually i'd call world party a classic too! I'd have to double check one monkey before i go any further than that but even a quick scan suggests this is also fucking great!

Hm, Still Standing was the one I listened to most at the time. I should pull these out again.

think you need to re-listen! not as good as the debut but it comes close and some of the highs reach even higher

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 19:18 (four years ago)

blasphemy!

one month passes...

slightly ot but saw at random goodie mob dropped survival kit, it was on like only one persons bestof20 list in the compilations screens. so it's like 00s comfort food rap for me, lots of solid/silly fusionizing. but i take comfort when i can, it's fine for now.

pence's eye juice (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:53 (four years ago)

really haven't cracked it yet, i'm ashamed to say. new andre verse! 2005 me would be angry.
