S&D: Brendan Benson

I downloaded a song called Tiny Spark from Brendan Benson. I have been listening to it three or four times in a row every day for the last couple weeks. Really solid pop, something I usually avoid these days. He makes it work.

So where do I start?

His album LAPALCO this year is fab, although sometimes I think his voice is really not what he thinks it is. His first album One Mississippi is out of print but you can find it on eBay routinely. Benson worked a lot with Jason Falkner on LAPALCO and Falknerisms are obvious. If you like Benson you should definitely check out Jason Falkner's two solo albums.

BB's first album is decent but probably not worth searching out. He was poised to be the next matthew sweet back in 95/96, but his album wasn't great and the label dropped the ball on his promotion--I knew some of the local guys that were supposed to be doing it around Detroit, and they were mainly local musicians bitter that their own bands didn't have contracts. As recently as 1999 I have seen boxes of BB posters and cds sitting in people's basements left over from the One Mississippi "promotion".
I was surprised he was even still around when Lapalco came out, and even more so that it was totally solid. I would definitely recommend it, but I warn you that BB in concert is not the same BB on the album, which leads to my next thread...

Off the top of my head, "Life in the D" and "Metarie" are two pretty good songs off 'Lapalco'.

"Metarie" is indeed grebt...One Mississippi is one of those used-bin staples, and while it's a bit top-heavy, there's some great tracks..."Me Just Purely", the 1-2 of "Bird's Eye View" and "Sittin' Pretty"...i didn't like Lapalco as much at first but it's growing on me fast..."I'm Easy" is great too. but yeah, he's made weak live.

two years pass...
Picked up the new Benson today entitled An Alternative to Love, groovy stuff. Not sure if it is better than Lapalco which frigging kicked ass but it is very good for sure.

six months pass...
"Metarie" is still a heart-breakingly great song.

The Raconteurs are going to be great, that's the collaboration between him and Jack White.

Alternative To Love is good, but Lapalco is still probalby his best.
