Fave 3 in a row

Sorry if this has been done before. What 3 albums in a row by an artist beat all other trilogys? What band/artist made an album that you loved, then they made another one that you loved even more and then made another and you said to yourself, jeez there is no way it could be as good, but it was! It really was! Doesn't happen every day.As this is a Talk Talk friendly forum I know that I am not alone in nominating Colour of Spring/Spirit of Eden/Laughing Stock.I will try to think of some others as well.

Scott Seward, Sunday, 24 November 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought of another. My favorite current rock band Katatonia definitely did it for me:discouraged ones/tonight's decision/last fair deal gone down. The latter album title answering the quiz show question:What Swedish heavy metal act with former ties to Satan named their 2001 album after a song by Satan-plagued blues guitarist Robert Johnson?

Scott Seward, Sunday, 24 November 2002 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, by the way, I can't spell cuz I'm drunk.Trilogies,I believe.

Scott Seward, Sunday, 24 November 2002 05:36 (twenty-three years ago)

-The Stooges' three (proper) albums
-Dig Your Own Hole, Surrender, Come With Us
-Let It Bleed, Stickyfingers, Exile on Main St.
-Ramones, Leave Home, Rocket to Russia
-The Clash, Give 'Em Enough Rope, London Calling

-my answers are boring and rockist; I will try to think of better ones later

I often seem to buy things in reverse-chronological order, which kind of eliminates the snowball-excellence-build up effect of hearing a band noticably improve from record to record. But ones that do count would include:

Debut / Post / Homogenic
Peloton / The Great Eastern / Hate
Giant Steps / Wake Up! / C'mon Kids
Foxbase Alpha / So Tough / Tiger Bay

i think Underworld pushed the formulae of their music to the limit but managed to make each album distinguishable and individual enough by bringing in newer elements each time to compliment the more predictable aspects

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

it seldom happens that three albums by one act are consistently good enough to keep me interested, though I can think of one :

discipline, beat, three of a perfect pair - king crimson
I was introduced to this music by an older girl who lived up the street from me. I had never heard their previous indulgent prog crap at the time and enjoyed the new wave sound very much. This group incorporated so many influences into their music that I was constantly impressed with every listen.
The interplay between the musicians on the first album blew my mind. The majority of Beat was much more straightforward with a post-punk sound (it remains my favorite by the band). The final album was all over the place with an experimental edge dominating the proceedings, yet the poppier tracks are even more melodic than on other albums.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Was wondering about this question myself....I don't find the 'order of improvement' in all the below, or, if they are unequal that it is necessarily in the order you stated, but I've found many bands have a kind of '3-album-phase' of greatness. My own fave sequences were:

Bowie: Low -> (The Idiot ) -> Heroes (never understood Lodger as the 3rd part of that 'trilogy')
Simple Minds: Reel To Real Cacophony -> Empires & Dance -> Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call
Magazine: Real Life -> Secondhand Daylight -> Correct Use Of Soap
The Passage: Pindrop -> For All & None -> Degenerates (-> Enflame too!)
Comsat Angels: Waiting For A Miracle -> Sleep No More -> Fiction
Yello: You Gotta Say Yes.... -> Stella -> One Second
Devo: New Traditionalists -> Oh, No! It's Devo -> Shout
Dead Can Dance: Spleen & Ideal -> Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun -> The Serpent's Egg
Cabaret Voltaire: MicroPhonies -> The Covenant.... -> Code
Chrome: Alien Soundtracks -> Half Machine Lip Moves -> Read Only Memory (an EP - but the next album started the slide....)
Chameleons: ditto Ned's post above.

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe (at least, according to my computer's "Find" function) that no one has mentioned the incredible 1-2-3 punch that was Elvis Costello's first three records. Everything he did after that could have been total shit (which, in fact, it turned out to be) and he'd still deserve a place amongst the ring of brightest angels around heaven.

Neil Young cleans up with: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After The Gold Rush and Harvest. Later on he had On The Beach, Tonights The Night and Zuma and to close that decade he released Decade, Rust Never Sleeps and Live Rust.

Sloan jumped from Smeared to Twice Removed then One Chord To Another to keep us all guessing.

Mercury Rev deserve mention for Yrself Is Steam, Boces and See You On The Other Side.

3 in a row is hard. Here are my suggestions:

_Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me_, _Disintegration_, _Wish_ (really, I can't support _Seventeen Seconds_ as an album even though selected songs on it are godlike)
_Construction Time Again_, _Some Great Reward_, _Black Celebration_ (I think that's right, anyway)
_Around The World In A Day_, _Parade_, _Sign O' The Times_ (you have no idea how hard that was for me)
_Come Visit The Big Bigot_, _Bad Mood Guy_, _Rotund For Success_
_I See Good Spirits, I See Bad Spirits_, _Kooler Than Jesus_, _Confessions Of A Knife_
_99%_, _Satirycon_, _Subliminal Sandwich_
_Orbital 2_, _Snivilization_, _In Sides_

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't say these are "good / better / best", more just a solid run of three studio records:

Pavement: Slanted & Enchanted / Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain / Wowee Zowee
Afghan Whigs: Gentlemen / Black Love / 1965
Arab Strap: The Read Thread / Monday At The Hug & Pint / The Last Romance
Mogwai: Young Team / Come On Die Young / Rock Action
Hood: Cycle of Days & Seasons / Cold House / Outside Closer
Yo La Tengo: Electropura / I Can Hear The Heart / And Then Nothing...

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

Add to that:

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci: Spanish Dance Troupe / The Blue Trees / How I Long To Feel That Summer In My Heart

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

I'd extend the Hood and Mogwai lists to four, myself.

(also, have SFA not been mentioned yet?! and ELBOW TO FUCKING THREAD)
