what do you understand by this?

In recent terms, seems like it could apply to a fair amount of the World Serpent wing (and I saw you just revived the Coil thread ;-)). But there are many ways to take this, the more I think about it, hm...Robin C to thread!

'We Love Life'?
Boards of Canada have the presence of a nameless dread humming through their bucolical music.

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 24 November 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

comus' first album "first utterance". bloody terrifying in places. the second one equally as scarey because they seem to just have become all hippy drippy flower children overnight. i found this quote online by one greg breth (who he?) - and it's all pretty true - : "has the most mad and demented atmosphere of any LP of its type. The vocals sound like flipped-out gnomes and trolls having a horrible acid experience, and the playing gives off an atmosphere of being stranded out on the moors knowing that an axe murderer is on the prowl! Don’t play this if you’re in an edgy state of mind--you may not be responsible for your actions during and afterwards. Fantastic cover that illustrates the beauty to be found in ugliness. Charming lyrics as well; they sing about being locked in an asylum, terrorizing those who judge one solely on looks and all manners of lost love in the Gothic UK style of romanticism. As someone recently said, I’d love to see the movie that looks like this sounds!"

quasi-military drumbeat. cold synthology.

"all dreamed out. all thought out. all played out. all lived out."

it hasn't been recorded yet, but it will be soon, hopefully ...

With album titles like Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays and Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields, I'd think that Empyrium would best embody this, no?

Atman and Magic Carpathians Project. Feral grooviness. Six Organs of Admittance, too (though more the live shows than the albums, from the reports i've heard).

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

aha Julio weren't you the one who amazed me by liking the Incredible String Band? now I know why I was amazed - you are a Steven Wells fan! (the ISB would be one of his all-time hates surely?)

though I think they probably got darker after the first album, meself.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

as I said I disagree with many of his opinions on music. I mean I like free improv, folk, free jazz, classical etc.

I'm only a fan of his bcz i like his writing and he makes me laugh.

I was just listening to wee tam today and heard 5000 spirits yesterday. still heavily listening to them. I'll need some more recommendations soon.

This is a strangely thin thread for such an intriguing topic. I'm surprised to see no mention of COB or Third Ear Band. In particular I would recommend the Third Ear Band soundtrack to Polanski's Macbeth if you're into the Wicker Man or Comus vibe.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 27 November 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, whatever happened to Pram? (My first thought, perhaps wrongheaded, when I saw the thread.)

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Saturday, 27 November 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, but Pram were great around that Sargasso Sea, Helium period. I don't really think of them as pastoral but definitely dark & childlike. I guess I thought of "pastoral" as a fancy word for "folk" but maybe there's a British connotation I'm not getting. If Boards of Canada is considered dark pastoralism I suppose Pram would qualify. I seem to remember the term pastoral being thrown around a lot in relation to Flying Saucer Attack but I never got that connection either. I guess the first thing I think of is Pentangle-style dark folk.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 27 November 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

XTC's Apple Venus Vol. 1 has some moments of VERY dark pastoralism.

Yeah, Alex and Porter Wagoner, "Rubber Room."

Johnny Paycheck, "The Cave," about post-nuclear attack and the cave Johnny finds to hang out in...someone left a whiskey bottle in there.

"Wheely Down" by Richard Thompson off his first solo album.

maarten maes (dice collective), Monday, 17 April 2006 18:53 (twenty years ago)

The first thing that "dark pastoralism" brings to mind for me is a lot of the drone stuff being released now, especially on Digitalis. Although this type of music usually has different connotations for me, apparently the music evokes different imagery for the guys at the lable, ie:

foxglove048: culver "day of the maniac" cd-r
hallowed ground rises to the sky, unleashing two epic journeys by the uk's culver. inspired by the desolation of two german films, "day of the maniac" strips culver's usual dense drones down to flesh and bone. meandering guitars follow each other through bavarian landscapes in search of salvation. these pieces are bathed in warmth and hope. 86 copies
