"Love" is definitely too strong but I've got nothing at all against Meg White, while Jack White can absolutely go fuck off.

lol soref!

Xps thread was actually inspired by reading a Cher interview this morning!

As much as I love 'Summer Breeze', I'm kinda giving both of them the stinkeye this morning after hearing their proto-Lil' Markie 'Unborn Child' for the first time. Ugh.

You will notice a small sink where your sofa once was. (Old Lunch), Monday, 14 December 2020 17:01 (four years ago)

The most obvious answer is Ike & Tina Turner. My own (real answer) might be the Carpenters, although it'd be stretching it to say I hate Richard Carpenter. He just seems vaguely creepy.

clemenza, Monday, 14 December 2020 17:01 (four years ago)

go on! you loathe ...eric?

― Evan, Monday, December 14, 2020 9:55 AM (six minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

yes! although i still lol at tim and eric things

i love tim but i feel like if i were in the same room as eric i would constantly want to punch him in the face

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 14 December 2020 17:02 (four years ago)

That's funny... we were recently rewatching some classic Tim & Erics, and felt that Eric plays it just perfectly (...that little smile), while Tim is sometimes too "broad" or forced.

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Monday, 14 December 2020 17:05 (four years ago)

Tim is a better actor all around though Eric is extremely good at the few things he does. Problem is that it's very easy to notice Eric's shtick. Tim seems to have more of a repertoire. Some of the really dry bits are where they're BOTH at their best. But like, Casey and his brother for instance seems like a character idea by Tim that Eric really didn't know what to do with; "Hey so I've got this grotesque talent show singing nervous little boy character I'm going to do, with an outfit and make up and fake vomit + spit and I'll sing these crazy songs with a voice and will have panic attack" "Sounds good guess I'll just put on these sunglasses and thrust around in the background".

Anyway, Eric's limitations are a little more obvious even if I consider him a master at that universe of comedy.

Evan, Monday, 14 December 2020 17:25 (four years ago)

I think all that is fair. This is an example of one that stuck out in particular -- like, who's the hero of that sketch?

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Monday, 14 December 2020 17:29 (four years ago)

Eurythmics

John & Yoko

kites aren't fun (NickB), Monday, 14 December 2020 17:31 (four years ago)

Can't believe I didn't think of John & Yoko. That's basically the pinnacle of "love one, hate the other".

I'm guessing you hate the one who dated Lembit Opik?

emil.y, Monday, 14 December 2020 17:36 (four years ago)

club yoko here too btw

kites aren't fun (NickB), Monday, 14 December 2020 17:36 (four years ago)

John and Yoko's 1970 albums were about evenly matched, she went downhill when she tried to write and sing pop songs.

My answer might be Jon and Vangelis, though my feelings towards the latter are more mild antipathy.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 14 December 2020 17:36 (four years ago)

my thing with Eric is that I think he's responsible for all the extreme gross-out shit which is my least favorite part of all of that. but I think a lot of the surreal and maybe funniest moments of T&E come from him as well. Tim can be a little one-note as well - most of his characters are pretty similar - but a lot of his stuff works really well for me on a conceptual level.

frogbs, Monday, 14 December 2020 17:37 (four years ago)

I'm guessing you hate the one who dated Lembit Opik?

that was part b) of my thinking :D

but who's to say they didn't take turns?

Uptown Top Scamping (Noodle Vague), Monday, 14 December 2020 17:38 (four years ago)

I don't have any of these, at least as far as the work itself is concerned, and struggle to even imagine how I could.

The New York Times' effect on man (Sund4r), Monday, 14 December 2020 17:39 (four years ago)

I guess it helps if the duo has worked outside of the partnership, so you have some idea what each person is bringing to the collaboration.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 14 December 2020 17:44 (four years ago)

I guess it helps if the duo has worked outside of the partnership, so you have some idea what each person is bringing to the collaboration.

Admittedly, I was mostly thinking in the context of the duo itself but if it were to somehow happen that an artist I love was going to collaborate with an artist I hate, I think I would be more likely to reconsider the hatred.

Neither Jon nor Vangelis acquitted themselves very well on that collaboration imo!

I think Tim is more convincing as a character actor and will become whatever the character needs to be, and Eric will simply either apply his specific goofy shtick to the character or will do the serious straight faced approach and not much else. Hard to say who is responsible for the gross out shit... examples of Tim being gross come to mind more often but not sure who pushes for it in the writer's room.

Eurythmics ftw, even though I don't really love Annie Lennox I feel Dave Stewart keeps up his side of the bargain more than adequately.

Godless Tiny Tim (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 00:38 (four years ago)

Esther & Abi Ofarim. I can't really say I love Esther, but she was cute, had a good voice and sang on a Scott Walker album whereas Abi was a chancer who was freeloading on his wife's talents. Not dissimilar to Sonny & Cher though without Sonny's production skills. Abi did (mis)manage Can for a while, somewhat bizarrely.

Godless Tiny Tim (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 00:47 (four years ago)

Hard to say who is responsible for the gross out shit... examples of Tim being gross come to mind more often but not sure who pushes for it in the writer's room.

true but Tim does way more acting in general, idk if I've seen anything else Eric's been in besides Aziz's show, idk how he is in there

the reason I 'credit' Eric with the gross out shit is because of some of the music videos he's directed in the 00's which tended to be pretty explicit and over the top weird. I feel like a lot of the really absurd stuff comes from him but the reality is they probably bring it out of each other.

Modern Talking, with Dieter Bohlen being the baddie and Thomas Anders the “innocent” one. I refer you to the musical about them I wrote in my head a long time ago, but this reading was sort of borne out by subsequent events.

Have you seen “Dieter - Der Film”?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 08:11 (four years ago)

I just found out about it while skimming ILM posts on MT (Geir was kind of obsessed with them, even comparing them to James Brown - not a compliment coming from him obv). just checked YouTube, but it only has the trailer, I think. would love to watch it tho!

John and Yoko's 1970 albums were about evenly matched, she went downhill when she tried to write and sing pop songs.

When did she do that -- Season of Glass? Those aren't pop songs.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 14:41 (four years ago)

Re Incredible String Band: I assume Robin Williamson sounds "elderly".

LOL I was thinking the other way round. Do either of them sound like Cat Stevens though?

Godless Tiny Tim (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 14:52 (four years ago)

She & Him - music-wise, anyway, I quite like some of M Ward's early albums but can't really get into Zooey's music career at all. I liked her a lot in New Girl though.

accordion no (Matt #2), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 16:49 (four years ago)

Haven't heard Approximately Infinite Universe yet. I assume I'll like it less than Yoko's Plastic Ono Band and more than her songs on Double Fantasy/Milk and Honey.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 17:14 (four years ago)

Not to say that any John Lennon solo/duo with Yoko albums were very consistent, but he had a couple of great songs on each.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 17:16 (four years ago)

it's been a while since i heard double fantasy but i remember coming away thinking yoko's songs were better than john's

AIU is Yoko's best album.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 17:23 (four years ago)

She has written some good songs that she can't sing, like on Sometime in New York City.

An ideal partnership might have been her writing all his lyrics.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 17:25 (four years ago)

I don't know who wrote what, it was more the choice of instrument

if you've ever really liked a TMBG song there is about a 100% chance it came from Linnell
