exile (easy)

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Thursday, 17 December 2020 05:53 (four years ago) link

"August" is my go-to standout, but saying so confidently undersells how strong and consistent this album is.

Tim F, Thursday, 17 December 2020 06:26 (four years ago) link

"august" is my favourite, but close behind it are "the last great american dynasty" and "betty"

ufo, Thursday, 17 December 2020 06:41 (four years ago) link

I was boring and voted august but yeah, seven, mirrorball, peace,

abcfsk, Thursday, 17 December 2020 08:05 (four years ago) link

invisible string or epiphany

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 December 2020 10:31 (four years ago) link

"Mirrorball."

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 17 December 2020 10:58 (four years ago) link

"cardigan" but I could vote for anything except "hoax" (though I'll probably come around on that one too).

All cars are bad (Euler), Thursday, 17 December 2020 11:14 (four years ago) link

Yeah, many great tracks but it would be between "cardigan" and "august" for me.
"cardigan" might be the one I've listened to the most.
Also "exile" but it took the Disney video for me to really get into it.

I think all the songs on this are close to equal. It lacks true standouts - it's a very consistent album. That being said I voted "Invisible String"

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Thursday, 17 December 2020 14:30 (four years ago) link

i relistened to this yesterday, finally broke out my vinyl copy, (which is a really lovely whisper-quiet pressing, which after getting two unplayable-to-still-oddly-warped copies of the 1975 record was a nice surprise). feels perverse to talk about effortlessness on a record where the protagonist admits they’ve never been a natural, all they do is try try try, but that’s what “invisible string” is to me, something that could’ve grown out of nature unattended

though i forgot that i would also vote for my personal alone forever anthem “the 1”

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 December 2020 15:05 (four years ago) link

So many terrific songs, but I keep coming back to "the last great american dynasty". I thought I'd tired of that one, but the long pond sessions version sold me on it all over again.

"Mirrorball" is tops for the Folkmore era

Indexed, Thursday, 17 December 2020 15:40 (four years ago) link

*screams into the sky* AUUUUUUGUUUUUSTTTTTTT

(“mirrorball” and “invisible string” are 2nd and 3rd respectively)

winters (josh), Thursday, 17 December 2020 16:28 (four years ago) link

"Invisible String" is the one that keeps coming back into my head even though I haven't listened to this in several months. I don't even really know the words; the VIBE of it keeps coming back into my head.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 17 December 2020 16:29 (four years ago) link

She sounds poignant singing the last syllable of "Mirrorball."

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 17 December 2020 16:32 (four years ago) link

xxp josh agree those are the top 3 - Would they change for you if you included Evermore? Struggling to place "Ivy" among them, which is maybe just "Invisible String" with banjo?

Indexed, Thursday, 17 December 2020 16:47 (four years ago) link

I’m still digesting Evermore, so I can’t say for sure, but I would think there’s room for that possibility. obviously, it’s to Folklore’s advantage that we’ve had it since July AND it also contains more immediate highs, while Evermore has more beautiful nuances to reveal over time

winters (josh), Thursday, 17 December 2020 16:54 (four years ago) link

and two bridges xp

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 December 2020 16:55 (four years ago) link

(my listen to folklore yesterday also confirmed i prefer evermore)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 December 2020 16:55 (four years ago) link

iiiii waaaaant you to know
(wanchutoknow)

followed by "peace", then "august"

"illicit affairs", "this is me trying" and "my tears ricochet" also elite

überweiss, Thursday, 17 December 2020 21:35 (four years ago) link

my jaw dropped so hard the first time I heard Mirrorball. idk if this is the best comparison but it reminds me a bit of The Clientele

josh az (2011nostalgia), Friday, 18 December 2020 05:41 (four years ago) link

before the disney+ special, it was "peace". after it's "exile". currently listen to the long pond studio session of "exile" most. it's unfair, but I wish I could unhear Swift's words on "peace" in the special. Dessner's thoughts on the lyrics resonate more with my own, but the performance feels less relatable knowing that it's a "sorry I'm so famous" song for her.

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 18 December 2020 05:57 (four years ago) link

then again this from the folklore thread is otm and still bothers me a little (and is from another "exile" voter itt):

The clunky metaphor is actually the next line — “You were my town, now I’m in exile...”

“Town” is weak; something like “home” would be better, but she already said “homeland.”

maybe more so because the "just not home" is so great and feels like a callback in ricochet. It's not the end of the world.

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 18 December 2020 06:12 (four years ago) link

Voted "seven." Wonder if I'll be the only one.

Lily Dale, Friday, 18 December 2020 06:24 (four years ago) link

I almost voted for that one, it’s the one I learned to play on guitar and it has maybe my two favorite lyrical moments on the album (“with Pennsylvania under me” and “where I learned civility”)

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Friday, 18 December 2020 06:55 (four years ago) link

"this is me trying" always wreck me in half.

Nourry, Friday, 18 December 2020 10:43 (four years ago) link

the first time she says "At least I'm trying" might be my favorite single moment on the album

Indexed, Friday, 18 December 2020 17:12 (four years ago) link

the first time i heard "this is me trying" i thought the vocals on it sounded like Grouper, which felt like an amazing comparison on the day this came out

"epiphany" or "exile"

"Last Great American Dynasty" for me

jaymc, Sunday, 20 December 2020 07:15 (four years ago) link

“August” was my early fave, but I voted “This Is Me Trying.”

Also want to give a shout to “Illicit Affairs.”
