We had a poll a few weeks back...the results are somewhere. We are now posting our individual ballot papers that constituted said poll. Hope this helps!

Mike Hanley, Thursday, 24 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like james' list best because it doesn't read like he put anything on there because he thought it should be on there somewhere. he simply listed his favourites and that's cool.

Oh, and they all got 5 points each. I liked Omar's comment on the scoring- "at this level you can't separate them"

Did anyone else vote for any Associates records?

Dr. C, Friday, 25 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I probably would have if I'd voted. The reissue of _Sulk_ last year wipes the floor with just about everything else released in 2000 -- and a number of years previous to that, too.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As I stated elsewhere, this list is less a list of things I acknowledge to be technically superior, and more the things that were huge formative influences on my tastes. A lot of it I don't listen to regularly anymore, but I still enjoy them when I do. Yeah, I realize I could have gone up to 20 per title, but what the hell. Spreads it out a bit.

oh, so so poorly formatted.

ethan, Monday, 28 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love everyone's lists on here - I feel like I could learn so much from each and everyone of you who posted one, and from a great many of those who didn't vote as well - and I don't feel this way very often outside of ILM. This forum really rocks sometimes.

Patrick, Monday, 28 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I second that, Patrick, even with the lists of people whose tastes generally diverge greatly from my own.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 28 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mine is here.

Josh, Tuesday, 29 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what's intriguing is the equal 5 points thing - I did that too cos it was too hard to try and rate them against each other. I also voted for rao ethiopia = pissing in the river the big reason - but what was everyone else's reason, rather than easter or horses?

Geoff, Tuesday, 29 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah i'm a Radio Ethiopia man meself :) Reasons? Side 2 mainly. 'total abandon' as the perfect manifesto for rock & roll and the title track has scratching noises + mega-riffs + explodes into blissful nothingness. Also beautiful cover and booklet (don't buy this one on cd). Which makes it just a bit more loveable in my mind than Horses (hard choice though, love that one too) or Easter (again brilliant 2nd side + rock & roll nigger). Okay so I should've listed all 3 of them!

ps. Ethan thanks, but I must say it almost logical since i like your list :)

Omar, Tuesday, 29 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am honored but shockingly i just emailed it. I didnt save it. It fetured alot more country then anyone else though.

anthony, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't vote: so can't oblige, idea does not really compute sadly. I don;t know how to do it.

Also: 40? Pfft. It's the best of the ten- multiples, obviously (next equal, 60 and 70, then 90), but it's still a lame and an unacceptable number. 41 = 39 = 38 = 37 = strange little cluster of ugliness. 42 = grate; 36 = betta (perfect square which also the product of wo perfect squares...)

Um: person whose top 40 I would not like to see, even if he sent it by Interflora: Patrick Calimero. So ner-ner-ner-ner-ner.

the pinefox, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Too late Pinefox, it's already on this page :-p. Seriously though, I'd like to see a Pinefox Top 40 Faves, but knowing how much you hate the idea, I didn't bother.

Patrick, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and thanks a lot, Otis and Anthony.

Patrick, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony - I HEART "Harper Valley PTA". The version I know is the one that's on my "Bright Lights, Country Music" box set, by one Jeannie C. Riley. She's got a great little lilty twang.

I too am honored, so here's my scandalously mainstream list of topp albums (36, to appease suddenly cracked-out mark s's numerological stance). My criterion wuz that it has to be something I actually PLAY in the house regularly. And I didn't vote, either, so this is pure indulgence:

* "Stardust" - Willie Nelson
* "San Antonio Rose" - Willie Nelson and Ray Price
* "Tiffany Transcriptions" box set - Bob Wills & Texas Playboys
* "Hazel & Alice" - Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerard
* "Shadowlands" - k.d. lang
* "Houserockin" - The Gories
* "Celebrate the New Dark Age" - Polvo
* "There Nothing Wrong With Love" - Built to Spill
* "Hip Priest and Kamerads" - The Fall
* "Singles" - Bo Diddley
* "Greatest Hits" - Screamin Jay Hawkins
* "Funky Kingston" - Toots and the Maytals
* "Aquemeni" - Outkast
* "Yo! Bum Rush the Show" - Public Enemy
* "Liquid Swordz" - GZA
* "Miseducation of..." - Lauryn Hill
* "Mixtape Vol. 1" - Funkmaster Flex
* "Ready to Die" - Notorious B.I.G.
* "Firestarter Vol. 1" - Kardinal Offishall
* "Turntablism" - DJ Krush
* "Jelly Tones" - Ken Ishii
* "World Receiver" - Tetsuo Inoue
* "Septic Cuts" comp. - Sabres of Paradise
* "Live at the Liquid Room vol. 1" - Jeff Mills
* "Kill Em All" - Metallica
* "Appetite for Destruction" - Guns n Roses
* "In Search Of" - Fu Manchu
* "Under the Big Black Sun" - X
* "B-52s" - The B-52s
* "Immaculate Collection" - Madonna
* "Control" - Janet Jackson
* "Thriller" - Michael Jackson
* "Money Jungle" - Ellington, Mingus, Roach
* "Constellations" - Dave Douglas and Tiny Bell Trio
* "[1st M'Boom record]" - M'Boom
* "Adventures in Afropea" - Zap Mama

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom T Hall wrote it. I own 8 versions of it on various media . I love Jean Rileys version, since it is the first one, although Iris Dements, Dolly Partons and sYd Straws are all worth metioning. In fact Tom T hall is a demigod in my musical pantheon as both performer and writer.

anthony, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I sent anything in, which is a shame, because then the compiler could have fought his way through all this unpopular shit that no one would ever think of, and wouldn't have made the list anyway... But here's my list for today in no order. It's a shame, because I could come up with a completely different 40 to-morrow.

Sleater Kinney: The Hot Rock

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion: Now I Got Worry

As usual I am haunted by the thought that there is a Ruling Idea in my answer and that somehow i Must Discover It. Also equally predictable, I'm now disgusted by my little sanctioned list and want never to listen to any of it ever again.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just remembered TOM T. HALL!! "Stuck Inside A Country Jail" - another "let me tell you a story" song. our hero runs a red light and gets thrown in jail, eventually letting his guard down and having a grand ol time: the jailer's wife flirts with him and cooks huge breakfasts, everybody sleeps late... after a week of this larking, our man goes before the judge -

well i told him who i was, and that i was workin steady
and i really should be gettin on my way.
that part about me bein who i was did not impress him
he said the judge will be here any day

so i guess he's talking to the jailer or something. anyway, TTH = wicked fresh

Tracer Hand, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Tracer, I thought the list was fairly adventerous. The GZA, for example, as well as the k.d. lang. The PE and Fall choices seemed to be dictated by the early-when-they-were-underground syndrome, tho. I mean... they both went on to scale much higher peaks.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

personally, i don't think the fall scaled any peaks higher than hip priest & kamerads (also made my top40 - see above)

gareth, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
thinking about this, i think opening it to singles as well as albums was obviously a good move, but i think still rather rockist. i think it should have been individual songs. maybe next time...

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 15 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

it should range from individual notes and silences to whole historysworth and planetsworth of works

ie
i. first drumbeat in :"be my baby"
ii. all solar system music evah
iii. lori and the chameleons
iv. noise of lizards having just overturned the world-picture

Well, I didn't vote in the poll, and I usually don't like lists all that much (since mine could change on any given day) - but here is my list in alphabetical order of my all time favorites. Or at least, stuff that I has stood the test of time for me as stuff I don't mind hearing any time. There is a lot of newer stuff (say the last 5 years) that might make this list shortly, but isn't really old enough yet to be an all time favorite. A lot of late 80s/early 90s pop stuff. Also I notice a left off a lot of "classic" stuff (Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, Dylan, etc.) - guess it hasn't been turning me on too much lately...

Next time I send in 10,000 ballots saying 'Shout at the Devil' I'll remove the elastic band and put them in separate envelopes. This electoral fraud business obviously takes more expertise than I thought

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Already I want to make a million revisions. I can sort of see why I never feel like I relate to anyone musically though.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Pulp - Different Class and Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell are on the short list.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I'll just take "Shoot" instead of all of Dirty.
