the place i've been playing music every friday has thee original buchla (the very first one!) and a 1967 modular moog...

we haven't hooked up the buchla yet but we're working on it.

If any of you tell Helltime Producto that about that phase shifter I'm going to kill you so hard.

revival/reminder...

should be posted by sunday for those who expressed interest.

gygax!, Friday, 6 December 2002 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

any synth experts here willing to chat with me? I have a few questions. thanks.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 6 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Dunno if I'm that much of an "expert" aaron, but what d'you want to know?

Gygax - thx for taking pics & all that, I'll look forward to seeing them!

Pashmina, Friday, 6 December 2002 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, Yeah, phase shifters. Dude, you weren't even around during the JostaBaby recording sessions. Now those guys have a reason to complain. In fact, I think their exact sentiment was "Damn it, Dan, you've already put phase shifting on the vocals, bass, keys, and both guitars. We're not gonna put it on the fucking drums, so take that Small Stone and stick it up your ass."

Man, those were the days.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 7 December 2002 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Wish I was still a gear whore, I would love one of those. I haven't even heard what it can do and I'm already salivating.

I'll just have to make do with a plug-in that does a similar thing.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Sunday, 8 December 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

just need to talk about thoughts on available 2vco syths for under $500 used. I know a bit about programming, but I have no subractive synths right now, just a dx100.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 8 December 2002 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

If you seriously want a true analog synth, I suggest Analogue Solutions' mini-modular. $419 new, 2 vco's.

But I would (and will soon enough) blow the extra $150 or so and get one of the newer budget modelling synths like the MS2k or the K-station. For what I want to do (sing like a killer robot) they're ideal and have some FX already built in, which I find indispensable.

Tom Millar (Millar), Sunday, 8 December 2002 06:36 (twenty-three years ago)

should I even consider jumping into the world of modular? If I was going to, I would probably save moeny for like a doepfer basic system.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 8 December 2002 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Between the Nord Micromodular and Reaktor, I've got more synth tweaking power than I probably need. (I'd still like to have an MS-20 or MiniMoog some day.)

Those Wiard modulars with the joystick controllers look like fun.

earlnash, Sunday, 8 December 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I have one ov two Wiard systems in the UK, or at least 5 out ov thee 8 available blue-panel modules. Be aware that Wiard is ceasing production of the large blue modules, so if you want a set (and they _are_ worth it, believe me) then move fast. Aaron, I'll type up a detailed answer to yr question tomorrow, & post it up. For now, take a look at the ModCan system.

and synthesis technology:

Which are both excellent systems.

more later.....

Pashmina, Sunday, 8 December 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

here is a dumb question re: modular...
assuming posession of correct cables, I can use modules from any company with any other company's modules? or not?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 8 December 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron - this is not a problem at all. I had my guitarist friend Mark around tonight, and I set up this sequencer patch with Wiard, SynthTech and ModCan modules - it all works fine. I also have some Serge and Blacet Research panels, and just about everything works together. The two issues to be aware of are power supplies and racking. All of the systems available can be mounted in std 19" rack units, but the modules are generally different sizes, so you have to stack rows of different modules above one another, or do what i did and hax0r some fancy studio cases up out of wood. As far as what I have goes, the Blacet, ModCan, Wiard and SynthTech all run from the same power supply, which provides +15v, gnd and -15v. The Serge uses a unique power supply. If yr going for Doepfer, you can also mount Analogue Systems and Analogue Solutions modules in the same racks, and use the same power supply. Analogue Systems has a very good rep, but personally I find that module format to be small and fiddly - if you get into making complex patches, you use a lot of cables, and a larger system, with a bit more "real estate" on the panels means you can more easily get at the knobs for tweaking. OTOH, many people get along with them fine, and you do squeeze more synthesiser power into a smaller space. The big advantage of a modular (apart from the generally excellent sounds available) is that you can start small, and build up - start with 1 VCO, 1 VCF, 1 VCA, an envelope generator and an LFO and build up from there. The downside is that making a standard sound, like something that would be really quick on EG a Pro-One takes much much longer on a Modular. Also, you can get a bit obsessive if the bug bites. We're working on this track, and Mark was last over a fortnight ago. I realised that I hadn't done any work on it b/c all I've been doing is making weird noises on the modular. Here is a bunch of weird musick done on various currently available systems. Mine is No2.

I like how just the case for the modules is $1500.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantastic news. Is there any possibility that they might start making the Music Easel again? I want one of those so bad, it hurts...
