One v. possible answer: "No"

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Winter" or "Mere Pseud Mag. Ed"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 24 November 2002 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Classical a bit better. I'm pretty sure it's my favourite track ever, by anyone. Fortress/Deer Park's amazing too, as are all the songs mentioned so far. Hex best Lp ever, probably.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The power of that Fall lineup comes through stronger in The Classical but I'd hate to have to choose just one. Hex is the best album ever and probably the apogee of human artistic endeavor.

dan (dan), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The Fall:ILM::Sleater-Kinney:Greil Marcus

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think we wish Mark E. Smith would have sex with us, nor do we associate his skills with his gender.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

His specific form of misanthropy seems pretty male, though. Both in and out of the band.

Utterly wonderful etc. song, of course. As Dan said, hard to choose one song from that era...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah he seems pretty specifically male to me, too, in good and bad ways. The Classical's the funkiest/most danceable, in addition to it's more obviously Fallish strengths.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

do you think i would like the fall

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

It is not APPRECIATED.

Douglas, Monday, 25 November 2002 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

what

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i think i might get this hex enduction cd because it was in adam nawlins dudes email address and he liked all sorts of great cash money shit also jess said they were his favorite band

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

They're a great band and that's a great album. "The Classical," which is the first song on it and is as great as the other folks on this thread have said, is however probably the band's most offensive song -- I don't know if anyone else wants to tell the story behind it...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

you can tell it ned. I don't know the story, but I know he says some rather naughties at the beginning. I thought it was hysterical that Pavement would cover it but leave out the inflammatory opening (scary wussy).

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I noticed that! Okay, the story, as referred to in the lyric link Jim just posted -- if rumor is to be believed, the Fall were about to be signed by Motown in 1982 or so. God knows how or why, but there it was. Then they heard "The Classical," which among other lines at the start has the words "Where are the obligatory niggers?" The signing never happened, unsurprisingly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:55 (twenty-three years ago)

they sound stupid

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

that makes two of you

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 25 November 2002 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

err, make that three

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 25 November 2002 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

what does that mean

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

s/e, you'd hate 'em, they don't rap about cars

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

well youve certainly made a fool out of me!!

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ethan i guarantee you'd hate them, but not necessarily more than the goons on this thread

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i do hate the goons on this thread

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess this is the third time you've wounded me this week and now I am going to cry like the good emo-boy I am

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

His specific form of misanthropy seems pretty male, though.

I don't know, there are times when I can relate to it a lot.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

nicole i cant believe you passed up a chance to say that ethan could relate to asshole male misanthropy

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

its fantastic of course, but winter (hostel maxi) is the best one!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 25 November 2002 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

if rumor is to be believed, the Fall were about to be signed by Motown in 1982 or so

Is it just me, or does anyone else find this "rumor" to be palpably ridiculous? Has Motown ever signed any band even remotely similar to the Fall?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

well there was that ill-conceived Terry & the Idiots 12" they put out in '82 - the backing vocals totally smothered Terry's smooth soul stylings

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan could relate to some of their stuff esp Bend sinister their hip hop* lp.

*n.b this is a very loose interpretation of hip hop.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I love all that record - it was the first record I brought back from town - I never found another one more enduring, I guess. There was another thread where people talked about the first time they heard The Fall - Mark S.'s comments were really beeutiful.

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Totally Wired.

gazza, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 07:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer Big New Prinz, just among the songs about the Hip Priest.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

It's on 'Slates' as well, isn't it?

Probably my favourite era of Fall stuff. If anyone asked me "What are this band all about and why are they so good" I'd probably put on 'Slates'. Older Lover, Hip Priest, Leave the Capitol, Fit and working again etc.

But to answer the question, yes. 'Feel like going home' by Charlie Rich. Amongst others.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Hip Priest is on Hex Enduction Hour. And to answer the question: yes. Spectre Vs Rector, Fortress/Deer Park, Winter, The NWRA, Slates, The Classical, Wings, Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul, Second Dark Age and Jawbone and Air Rifle are all better than the still mighty fine Hip Priest.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I've just got it on the same tape as 'Slates'. But it's from the same period, I think.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes: The Peel Session of "Winter".

Blood On The Knobs, Tuesday, 8 April 2025 19:22 (one year ago)

That performance of BNP is so killer. Brix is so badass in that clip.

Blood On The Knobs, Tuesday, 8 April 2025 19:23 (one year ago)

Yes "Winter" is it.
