I pretty much love these guys btw and I'm shocked nobody mentioned "In Circles" itt as I think it easily trumps "Seven" as their best thing
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)
SDRE is one of my absolute favorite bands ever. Period.
― Marty Innerlogic, Monday, 17 August 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)
"In Circles" rules obv.
I once bought one of their CDs, but quickly exchanged it for another.
― _Rockist__Scientist_, Monday, 17 August 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)
in circles is fine but i still prefer seven
was listening to this album again recently for some reason
― you! me! posting! (electricsound), Monday, 17 August 2009 23:23 (sixteen years ago)
"The Prophet" is my favorite SDRE song. I think I'll take "Seven" over "In Circles" but "Grendel" is the one I come back to the most on the debut.

Just listened to Return of the Frog Queen yesterday and remembered that these guys had a Record Store Day 7" this year that I forgot about.
― cwkiii, Friday, 17 October 2014 20:50 (eleven years ago)
It's on Spotify. Good song. Too bad they never pulled another album together.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 17 October 2014 20:57 (eleven years ago)
I had completely wiped The Fire Theft from memory. I'm sure it must have at least mildly excited me in 2003, but stumbling across it on wikipedia today was like completely new information.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 March 2015 22:21 (eleven years ago)
"heaven" off the fire theft record is remarkable
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 March 2015 23:28 (eleven years ago)
The other night I got a nostalgic urge to listen to SDRE's second album, because I was nuts about them in high school and beyond. I listened to it all the way through, but felt distinctly underwhelmed. Maybe one song on it sort of did anything for me. I will reserve judgement until I re-listen to the first one. But agreed that 'seven' is fucking awesome.
― Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Monday, November 25, 2002 1:56 AM (thirteen years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
similar nostalgic urge last week and came up with different results. The 2nd album (always my favorite of the two--never bothered with anything post-breakup) holds up for me. It's so oppressive and gloomy. I also noticed (maybe for the first time) how good the drumming is. No wonder Grohl tapped that guy to play in Foo Fighters.
Pushed my luck and revisited Diary, which, as stated many times upthread, starts out strong, but really fizzles off after that. Still, good "sound" on these records. They're very of-their-time, but in a good way.
― Wimmels, Saturday, 22 October 2016 17:51 (nine years ago)
Yeah, William Goldsmith is such an incredible drummer, especially on that second record (which is still one of my favorite records).
Post-breakup, still think How It Feels is brilliant, but that's where I get off the boat.
― cwkiii, Saturday, 22 October 2016 18:27 (nine years ago)
I guess I should hear that one, a lot of people seem to like it. I felt like I'd sorta 'outgrown' them at the time or something, they just weren't at all on my radar by that point
― Wimmels, Saturday, 22 October 2016 19:57 (nine years ago)
It's a totally different vibe from the first two but it's a very very good record.
― cwkiii, Saturday, 22 October 2016 22:22 (nine years ago)
I never really listened to this band, but this was a pretty good/intense interview about SDRE and being miserable in Foo Fighters.http://www.thetrapset.net/094-william-goldsmith-sunny-day-real-estate-the-fire-theft/
― sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 27 October 2016 21:41 (nine years ago)
How It Feels is no question their best record. Nostalgic for the first two from time to time, but I still actively love that one.

― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:26 (seven years ago)
In The Trap Set interview - which is a good listen - he is kinda pissy about Grohl, with good reason imho and interestingly very direct about how Dan Hoerner is apparently a terrible person, also a lot of his family seem to have had battles with alcohol with tragic results, so perhaps he's some kind of grudgeful drunk poster.
― MaresNest, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:47 (seven years ago)
I knew he held no love for Grohl, the supposed "lost album" was a new twist to me.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:49 (seven years ago)
one day in the late 90s i was minding my own business reading a SDRE interview, and then william goldsmith starts describing his approach to playing drums, and that with every snare hit he's trying to "crack the earth" so that his dead sister might one day rise up through it... i swear that quote flashes thru my mind monthly

!
― ufo, Monday, 24 January 2022 21:52 (four years ago)
the lost album goldsmith was rambling about years ago was just their unfinished attempt at recording a new album after the 2009 reunion, right? it was pretty well-established that they'd written new material & tried to record it after the reunion tour but the sessions didn't end up going anywhere for whatever reason?
― ufo, Monday, 24 January 2022 21:56 (four years ago)
Wow, after hearing Will Goldsmith talk about Dan Hoerner on that Trap Set podcast a few years back, I figured they were done forever.
I think he may have also talked about the "lost" album in that interview, too? iirc, it was just the sessions that "Lipton Witch" came from; I think they had a few other half-finished songs before they split again.
― cwkiii, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 19:41 (four years ago)
i didn't become a fan of this band until How It Feels which I still rank very highly; I saw them on tour for the Rising Tide and thought it was great, so I'll likely check this out.
― akm, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 19:53 (four years ago)
XP - That was my first thought too, he was very robust about Dan, to say the least.

Rising Tide is all time. What a masterpiece. That album was my introduction, and nothing I've heard from them topped it.

It was my favorite of theirs last time I thought about such a thing. That was a long time ago, though.

I remember the 15th anniversary show at Metro in Chicago - one of the band member's wives was pregnant and it was the first time Metro had a no smoking policy for a show. My how time's change.
― BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 19:42 (two years ago)
the circumstances of this re-recording are a little weird, not sure how i feel about this happening when nate mendel isn’t currently in the band (whatever interpersonal and professional conflicts that required them to reunite again without him notwithstanding, i don’t pretend to know about these things, glad they’re touring it’s awesome) and god knows the reason i love diary and LP2 is the particular dynamic of these guys playing together, maybe the first time i heard a non-jazz record where i felt like a whole world was being opened up just through interplay, a feeling i think is a little lost on the records they made when they first reunited without mendel, even though both of those records are insanely good
but also that studio clip sounds dope, and one of the flaws-that-is-a-feature of diary is how ruined his voice is from the tour they did right before recording it, and i’m interested in how he’ll approach it with a not-ruined voice. notice he’s taking a lower register in the verses which admittedly sounded painful to sing on the og

i went digging and some instrumentals from the unfinished 5th album sessions during their last reunion leaked a while ago and the band's confirmed they're real. hoerner's said he's not happy with the songs at all though so they're probably never finishing or releasing those.
