"The First Big Weekend" is catchy and their biggest hit i think.

i like "rocket, take your turn" and "love detective"

"Here We Go" is brilliant, as is "Autumnal" - c'mon, you can't fight lyrics like these:

You said it youself - you can't help but flirt
And I'd be the first to admit that I'm easily hurt.
I can't take things lightly - you said I'm always in a huff.
I know it was just the once but what if that's enough?

Just shut the fuck up and tell me bit by bit
Cause all I can see is his hand grabbing a tit.
I do one four seven one the minute I get in
And if your number's not there you stuff stays in the bin.

Well I love 'em.

(1471 being the UK equivalent of *69, kids)

"new birds" is a more dynamic track.

but really, you just need to drown yerself in them to 'get it'.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Monday, 25 November 2002 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"first big weekend"
either version of "(afternoon) soaps"
"here we go"
"new birds"
"tanned"
"motown answers"

but "first big weekend" is THE arab strap song to hear, OPO POO.

the philophobia album

gareth (gareth), Monday, 25 November 2002 07:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"new birds" definitely. the live album ("mad for sadness") is the one to get - somehow philophobia always sounds a bit thin to me, whereas live they're way noisier.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "Philophobia" is brilliant from start to finish but what do I know, being a big moron and all

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Philophobia indeed..

I have the rest of their full-length output as well, and while there's great stuff on there, "Philophobia" rules them all.

it makes me feel kind of awkward and sad.. its brilliant

tinobeat (tinobeat), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

philophobia is definitely their best album; i just don't think the production does them justice. they made me cry when i saw them live (it was either new birds or piglet, can't remember which).

toby (tsg20), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Each album they do sounds purtier than the last. Philophobia is the last one where I cared what the dude was ranting about.

Curt (cgould), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

the philaphobia stuff live was better than on record, still a very good record though

gareth (gareth), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Their remix of David Holmes' 'Don't Die Just Yet' is an utter classic - better than anything else either Holmes or the Strap have done.

Doctor B, Monday, 25 November 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Cherrubs, Scenery and The Long Sea are my favourate boring cruddy post-whatever slow boring indie-folk bollocks Arab Strap songs.

Callum (Callum), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The First big Weekend is available to download directly here. (right click and select save to disk (or for Mac users Control/mouse))

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Philophobia for the title and all. Is there a live album of this, Gareth? I still bought the next record after and decided to give up on them. A one-trick pony.
