I toyed around with other choices, but went with the obvious "Cry Little Sister" in the end. Although, its legacy has since been tarnished by a fucking Marilyn Manson cover.

This was my favourite movie for about a year, when I was ten, so naturally, I owned the soundtrack. That said, not having seen the movie in a while (and not having listened to the soundtrack in decades), I can't offhand remember the INXS, Daltrey, Eddie and the Tide or Tim Cappello songs (the Newman track is just a snippet of score, no?). The other songs I not only remember, but I could still tell you where each of them appear in the film.

I think I was able to spend a few good years thinking that "People are Strange" was an Echo original.

I recall a big complaint at the time was 'WTF where's that song he's singing in the bathtub??'. Presumably the soundtrack honchos couldn't get the rights from Clarence Frogman Henry, or his people. Either way i'm glad to have found this perennial wedding-dj-set classic via this film.

I can imagine an alternate timeline where Clarence Frogman Henry *was* included and some fraction of kids with the soundtrack were sent in some strange directions in life.

I learned super late that "Good Times" was an Easybeats cover, which makes it cool for a couple of reasons. But that version is a great example of how to cover an older song and make it sound contemporary without making it sound bad. "People Are Strange" is a great way to cover the Doors and make them sound like Echo & the Bunnymen.

Super (weirdly) iconic film for a certain generation and a great example of an '80s soundtrack, with its cover versions, state of the art cheese and one-off randos. Didn't remember "To the Shock of Miss Louise" so gave it a quick play and was sent right back to the movie.

Good Times was a huge hit in Australia, i feel like it stayed on commercial radio for like, 15 years after it came out

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 February 2021 18:04 (three years ago) link

i think it was a pretty moderate hit here (i feel like i remember radio play), but i'm embarrassed to say i had no idea that was INXS w him. listening to that first verse now it's like duh that's so unmistakably Michael Hutchence.

"Cry Little Sister" is an objectively good song.

But (sorry not sorry) I cannot resist the tidal pull of "I Still Believe" as a tribute to shirtless chain-clad cheesiness.

Also it seems like Cappello is a good sport and has used his notoriety for good. You can actually hire him as a motivational speaker, btw. Which I find oddly charming.

Holy shit, does he appear shirtless and tell people they can still believe?!

Me too. I heard it on my local "classic rock" station about a year and a half ago, and it completely threw me: I only knew the INXS/Barnes version, and this station never plays anything vaguely unknown (it's one of those "classic rock" stations that's heavy on Stone Temple Pilots and Bon Jovi). I had no idea who it was, and thought maybe it was a lost Small Faces or Humble Pie song, as the voice in the chorus sounds a lot like Steve Marriott.

We just watched this movie this past weekend!

That INXS/Jimmy Barnes song was pretty high up on the charts, according to Wikipedia. I had no recollection of it until I hit play on Spotify.

Then I was "Oh yeah, I've heard this song a million times."

pplains, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:35 (three years ago) link

It gets played TWICE in the movie.

This Cappello article is entertaining.

“I was with Tina (Turner) for 15 years. She was such a huge part of my life,” Cappello said. “In other words, every day, every night, playing with her and looking at video from the night before. I did so many records with her and all this stuff? It means nothing. I’ll go to a convention or I’ll go do a gig and I’ll have a picture of me and her. Maybe I’ll sign one or two a day. It’s just all stills from The Lost Boys. That’s what people want and that’s what they see me as.”

Josh, almost. Seems like he's been wearing a tank top a lot, but there is also a crocheted version of his shirtless self out there.

Cappello is a self-aware god of course, but I'm surprised that there's been all this "Cry Little Sister" love without any further mention of McMann himself -- because dude has had a strange career. The 'Pseudonyms' section is my favorite since it says fellow soundtrack denizen Roger Daltrey is a long-time friend!

Wow, look at all that random soundtrack drek. Three songs in Hardbodies!

Ahhh of course he's responsible for the sax solo in "We Don't Need Another Hero," my favorite sax solo of the entire 80s!
