I need some help. I have very few records. These are the records I have AND like at least a little bit.

All of Belle & Sebastian
The Velvet Underground & Nico, VU, Loaded, The Velvet Underground
The Strokes
Daft Punk - Discovery

I am only seventeen so all hope is not lost. Which records should I buy. Thank you.

jaws, Monday, 25 November 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry about the subject. Accidentaly pressed return.

jaws, Monday, 25 November 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Yikes! This is gonna be one of those threads comprised of lists, so let me jump in with "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars".

Sean (Sean), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello Jaws and welcome! There's so much nice music - I've been reobsessing over Blonde Redhead's "Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons" which breaks my heart - certainly if you're enjoying the Velvet Underground you might try early John Cale solo albums (Paris 1919 & Vintage Violence especially) - these are totally random suggestions but I hope they serve you well!

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Monday, 25 November 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Lou Reed's Live album is excellent. You might also like the Delgados (The Great Eastern is my favourite), Television (Marquee Moon!), and the Smiths are about as quintessential as it gets.

Hope this helps.

call mr. lee, Monday, 25 November 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The VU and the Strokes eh? Television would be a good place for you to go - check 'Marquee Moon' and it should open a few doors. Joy Division too might tickle your toes - 'Unknown Pleasures'. I also tirelessly recommend Spirit's 'The Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus' to anyone who likes rock music. If you like Lou Reed give Dylan a go. Anything before 1978 is good with Bob, start with 'Blonde on Blonde' and see what happens. Rolling Stones 'Let It Bleed' rocks, Led Zepelin 'Physical Graffiti' rocks, The Doors 'LA Woman' rocks. I mean these are all staples of the rock canon and should open you up to the more obscure stuff. And if you wanna be freaked, check out 'Troutmask Replica' by Captain Beefheart, although you might have to give it a spin or two...

The Daft Punk departure, well, I don't tend to rate much of the contemporary parallels with thses boys, doesn't really float my boat man. Stereolab are an alternative - check 'Dots And Loops' or 'Mars Audiac Quintet'. Something by the Silver Apples might be worth tracking down, and if you like Nico's aesthetic with the VU, give Stina Nordenstam a spin.

Just fuckin' enjoy.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

dmx krew ~ we are dmx
basement jaxx ~ rooty
stereolab ~ emperor tomato ketchup (NOT dots and loops)
happy mondays ~ bummed
st etienne ~ smash the system

gareth (gareth), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Welcome! You've got some great recommendations so far.

You can't go wrong with the Ramones. Rhino did a nice job of reissuing their first four albums on CD and they are all timeless. Also T. Rex is pretty great... the best-of is very nice.

That's enough out of me.

Aaron W, Monday, 25 November 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

If you like Belle and Sebastian and VU you could do worse than the Aislers Set. You can download "The Way to Market Station" (possibly my favourite of their songs) from their page on http://www.epitonic.com/ , which also has a truckload of other free and legal mp3s, mostly of an indie nature. Poke around, try searching for bands you like and see what it recommends as similar, there's got to be something you like on there.

And I feel obliged to plug Clinic, but then none of their albums are quite as good as I insist on believing the band are. Sigh. And another vote for Stereolab: anything up to 1996, really.

I could go on for hours in a similar vein, much to the horror of everyone else here, but I should probably at least pretend I'm working...

Rebecca outs herself as some kind of tweeist (reb), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth! Dots and Loops is shurely the pinnacle of Stereolab's output.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

no roger, its the nadir!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Dots and Loops is possibly my favorite.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

See you on the new thread...

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps you'd like the Jesus and Mary Chain. "Psychocandy" is splendid.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're a Belle and Sebastian fan, you could do a lot worse than ballboy's new album, "A Guide for the Daylight Hours".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Some people around these parts dote on an album called "Loveless"...

Sean (Sean), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, get "Loveless"! Also Low "Secret Name".

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

If those are all you have, just go buy some freakin' records already and figure out what you like. I don't see THAT much common ground between the various groups (arguable, but anyway). You're running a little behind at seventeen, no offense, so just grab a bunch of weird shit you know nothing about and get to it.

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, maybe if you work really hard you can turn into a bland turd like Matt Riedl.

Aaron W, Monday, 25 November 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

epitonic = a cheap way of grabbing a bunch of weird shit you know nothing about :)

Any recent purchases that you don't like at all? Anything in that list that you only like "a little bit"?

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Marc Bolan & T. Rex-The Ultimate Collection. Get that. Then, if you really like it, get the T. Rex albums Electric Warrior and The Slider.

Also the Only Ones-Perfect View. I think it's still in print. And the dance record I'd suggest is Sparks' Number One in Heaven.

Sorry, they're all from the 70s. Let's see, something kinda now...maybe you should look into Stereo Total. They have elements of all 4 of the bands you mentioned. Well, maybe not much Belle & Sebastian. Either get the compilation Total Pop, or the albums My Melody or Music Automatique .

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Some people around these parts dote on an album called "Loveless"...

What COULD you mean.

I echo Arthur and Sean's selections -- and actually most everybody's, really.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

you could try hiphop....eminem - eminem show or 8mile sountrack, jay z - reasonable doubt, missy elliot - da real world, notorious big - ready to die, the beatnuts - stone crazy, dr dre - 2001

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron: why the lashing out at me? I don't even know who you are, though now I fucking hate you. Bring it on, pooboy.

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

p.s., be sure to check out my website, www.mattriedl.com

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The Aaron/Matt tiff aside, this thread turned out to be uncommonly pleasant!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was pleasant, too. My advice to Jaws was well-intended and I meant him no harm.

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was pleasant, too. My advice to Jaws was well-intended and I meant him no harm. By seventeen, I was way, way, into rock; that's all I meant.

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

And, to make it even more pleasant, might I suggest a heaping helping of P.Funk? Parliament's Mothership Connection, Funkadelic's Uncle Jam Wants You, any Bootsy Collins greatest hits, and George Clinton's You Shouldn't-Nuf Bit Fish might be nice if you're feeling like exploring some new territory. But everyone else is, as always, quite correct.

Oh, and Prince. All of it.

Matt C., Monday, 25 November 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

try some derek bailey.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

gentle waves - green fields of foreverland
rolling stones - let it bleed
3lw - a girl can mack
king tubby and the aggrovators - foundation of dub
sonic youth - goo
juvenile - 400 degreez
the harder they come
kylie minogue - fever
no doubt - return of saturn
trina - diamond princess

buy all of those.

d k (d k), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry about my unpleasantness... I blame it on pre-lunch bitchiness and misreading the tone of Matt's post. Where's the love? It's right here!

Ditto on Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy. Also thought of the Stone Roses (self-titled, not Second Coming).

Aaron W, Monday, 25 November 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

try some derek bailey.

Aida is twee as fuck, in my opinion.

hstencil, Monday, 25 November 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Jaws--

Which records have you bought (thought you were going to like) and NOT liked? That could help us.

Douglas, Monday, 25 November 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

''Aida is twee as fuck, in my opinion.''

In this record derek sings abt cardigans and clocks! he does!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, lots of replies here.
Records I didn't like...
The Vines' album and Teenage Fanclub - Howdy. They were okay, but I could never love them, you know :)
Anyway, thanks for suggestions and welcomes. I unfortunatly can't afford to buy it all, so I guess I'll downlaod some first and then get the stuff I like.

jaws, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Judging by what albums you already have, I think you might get quite a bit out of Wilco, the Flaming Lips, and Gomez. Great experimental catchy unique rock bands with character out the wazoo. All of which released amazing records in 2002.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Another vote for Clinic. Don't make the mistake I did by getting Walking With Thee first and falling in lurve with it and then having every single person ever in the history of music fandom tell you that it's crap and Internal Wrangler is better, thus finding yourself unable to come to terms with that concept. Just buy those two albums and their 3 EPs collection and put them all on random play in yr 3+CD changer and HOORAY

Discovery is indeed very awesome so you might also like Alex Gopher's stuff.
