We didn't have a 2021 thread so here is a nice fresh one. To kick things off I'm going to start with, um, a record from 2009? Deathbomb Arc gave this Lauren Bousfield alias a reissue this year, and I've been caning it a lot lately:

https://laurenbousfieldanyev3r.bandcamp.com/album/from-rotting-fantasylands

emil.y, Wednesday, 24 March 2021 22:51 (four years ago)

omg, I still need to send you that secret Bousfield project.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Thursday, 25 March 2021 14:48 (four years ago)

emil.y, i sent something to your webmail!

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Thursday, 25 March 2021 15:52 (four years ago)

Lauren is so awesome!! as in, another rad person IRL who makes cool music. (as table is the table also knows) ...

I still remember her telling this friend, this guy Kevin, they shared a practice space, and Kevin would come to all the shows Lauren's bands and their friends' bands would play, but Kevin was terminally broke so depending on the gig, Kevin would often end up outside the venue because he couldn't afford the cover charge. A lot of the time they'd get Kevin in as a +1 or a roadie or something.

Anyway, at one show in San Francisco, Kevin was outside. He was sitting on the sidewalk, smoking cigarettes, and a person walked past with wild hair that resembled that of one of those Troll Dolls. So Kevin pointed at the person and shouted with a smile, "Troll Doll!" The person was upset. I forget if there was any other drama, but anyway ...

So, back to Lauren. We were all at another show, and Kevin was trying to understand why his friends were somewhat embarrassed by him, and Lauren says, "Kevin, there are out-y thoughts and in-y thoughts. There are thoughts that are okay to think but you just don't say out loud. ... Like shouting Troll Doll at that guy!"

Anyway, I still think about out-y thoughts and in-y thoughts ... and Troll Doll!

sarahell, Thursday, 25 March 2021 16:13 (four years ago)

Kevin was always extraordinarily kind to me, but lord, he really knows how to get on peoples' shit-lists! T00th and our dear departed J0ey, for two, can't stand the guy. And he is a bit of a prick! But a very funny and kind person, in many ways.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Thursday, 25 March 2021 16:30 (four years ago)

I always had a soft spot for Kevin, tbh ... I heard rumors that he (partly due to a substance abuse issue) was abusive to a romantic partner at one point? And that a number of friends became former friends because of that? ... idk, this was after the Troll Doll incident. I think he's cleaned up a bit and is studying to become a therapist or something.

sarahell, Thursday, 25 March 2021 16:33 (four years ago)

Kevin was in a great band for a while, Primary Colors, and speaking of weird music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEiEpCsh338

Experimental industrial noise using homemade trash drumset and broken reel-to-reel and analogue synths.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Thursday, 25 March 2021 16:38 (four years ago)

sarahell, let's just say that when T and I lived next the Church, there was often yelling happening between Kevin and others...because Kevin loved startin shit.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Thursday, 25 March 2021 16:39 (four years ago)

I can imagine! And yeah -- I remember seeing Primary Colors and being like, "Damn! Y'all are really great!"

sarahell, Thursday, 25 March 2021 16:41 (four years ago)

Ahhh, thank you table! Just d/ling now. Having a listen to the Primary Colors youtube and it is pretty cool, I hope Kevin sorted himself out and stopped being a bastard.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 March 2021 17:01 (four years ago)

I hope you laugh yourself silly listening to what I sent, emil.y!

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Thursday, 25 March 2021 17:10 (four years ago)

Kevin has actually -- I think he sobered up and he's working on becoming a licensed therapist!

I'm loving the new compilation tape on A Colourful Storm's sublabel Fleetway Tapes, featuring a bunch of folk from the Aussie underground working under aliases I think. RIYL Carla dal Forno, CS + Kreme, HTRK

dntel's been making amazing music forever (hit it big with a very popular duo in the 2000s and has been doing the right thing since then), brin's been pretty active for the last couple years doing sensory percussion stuff

Kind regards, Anus (the table is the table), Tuesday, 7 September 2021 18:56 (four years ago)

Yeah, I can see '00s no wave in there. Fun stuff.

Still doing my radio show, feel like it's been long enough since I flogged it here: https://www.mixcloud.com/citybeatradio/cryptophasia-021/

That's last month's show. Got another one coming up very soon and I've been too disorganised/preoccupied/depressed to really do much listening for it, so who knows how it'll go ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 12:40 (four years ago)

I've often found that it's those shows where I'd really pull it off, but when I was prepared, the show could easily go to shit. Hope you experience the same!

emil.y, Thursday, 23 September 2021 15:03 (four years ago)

I'm pretty selective when it comes to glitchy experimental bc so much of it plods and kinda goes nowhere, but yea this sounds like it might be cool.

billstevejim, Thursday, 23 September 2021 15:12 (four years ago)

Well, if we're posting that kind of thing, I'll crosspost something that I also posted to the post-post-post-deconstructed thread, this new 43-track audio sketchbook from Giza's 1127— traditional Egyptian music meets club music and noise. Unsettling and unpredictable, has made me think something is wrong with my speakers more than once. https://1127.bandcamp.com/album/bedroom-adrenalean-post-kovidclub

I'm a sovereign jazz citizen (the table is the table), Thursday, 23 September 2021 15:42 (four years ago)

yeah despite ziurs behind the scenes presence idk it sounded weird and unclassifiable enough to me. bass level is def ‘club’ but it balances out the treble so it’s not as fatiguing as so much glitchy stuff is

some gorgeous gamalan:

https://divisi62.bandcamp.com/album/malar

"Uwalmassa shape their relationship with various forms of musical heritage into technical and stylish forms on Malar, marrying acoustic sonics with a contemporary outlook that reflects their Indonesian identity; evolving, mutating, and scavenging traditions to draw parallels to dance music, and to test the adaptability and flexibility of those sounds.

Here the collective go dark and deep in their first album-length collaboration with Mana, casting long shadows and moving snake style at speed across nine tracks. Using a mix of synthetic and acoustic instruments - the texture of Malar feels enigmatic, occasionally industrial, and the result magical in its mystery and fluctuating impact."
