music that sounds like the 'mono no aware' compilation from PAN

so, the 'mono no aware' comp (2017) was easily one of my favorite releases of the 10s, soundtracking countless walks through dystopian trump-era gentrifying brooklyn and its attendant mix of ugly shiny new buildings and human desperation ... what else gives the calm, accepting-the-apocalypse vibe that this comp crystallized but did not invent? i'd say its 'sound' - minimal, sort of ambient, sort of vaporwave-y, sort of experimental, sort of soundtrack-y, existed before it, and is still around, but it's not super coherent. less of a 'scene' or 'genre' than a 'tendency'

the kareem lofy release from a few years back scratches the itch; i was disappointed in it at first due to its 'basic' sound palette but it's the right vibe - https://quiettimetapes.bandcamp.com/album/kareem-lotfy-qtt10

croatian amor is pretty good for this too although the release with varg tips into self-parody; this is better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLQ6VlDnIro

soho rezanejad brings powerful vocals to the vibe - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJigFvB7dcM

the malibu album is an obvious choice; it's the type of 'ambient' that does not blend in but rather feels heavy and induces a uneasy feeling - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYKpNwVgmN0

Check out the West Mineral and Experiences Ltd labels. For Those Of You Who Never Have by Huerco S, Make Me Know You Sweet by Pendant and Tumbling Against A Wall and the bbliss compilation are some of my favourites from that scene.

paolo, Monday, 29 March 2021 15:45 (four years ago)

Tumbling Against A Wall is by Ulla, oops

paolo, Monday, 29 March 2021 15:46 (four years ago)

yes huerco s/west mineral is great for this. i think actress hits this vibe sometimes too

also feel like pontaic streator fits in:

feel like the Janushoved label might carry some of the same vibes but I really haven’t heard enough besides some Internazionale tapes

thanks y’all. also that Pontiac streator is way better than I remembered, recommended

c minus from Kansas City is another great node in this recent abstract/dubby ambient network of uon/exael/Ulla/Streator/Huerco etc.: https://soundcloud.com/cminuss

Kangol In The Light (Craig D.), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 14:32 (four years ago)

Abyss X comes to mind:

***croatian amor, smh

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 6 April 2022 19:11 (three years ago)

This is hitting the spot, cheers. [nb, Christian Armour would be a great band name]

One thing that feels adjacent (but is potentially too cosy) is CFCF's stellar Night Bus 4 mix: https://soundcloud.com/cfcf/night-bus-4-memory-of-night-bus

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 6 April 2022 21:17 (three years ago)

awesome, will check it. i listened to isa probably too much in the late before times; it nailed the covid dread before the fact. although i didnt love the thing they did with varg ...

speaking of west mineral, above, ben bondy's work on that label def belongs here

https://westmineral.bandcamp.com/album/glans-intercum-ouest090

on that note ... it's interesting to think about how influential 0PN was to the 10s, but now that precision tooled high-capitalist nihilism seems really played out and this more 'organic' post-vaporwave approach feels more right in this moment. it's also a nice antidote to the whole rvng/commend upgraded new age music thing, which has lost its freshness and now basically amounts to high end aural wallpaper

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 6 April 2022 23:00 (three years ago)

yeah I really want to hear his new one, loved the one with all the pliers and shit on the cover

brimstead, Wednesday, 6 April 2022 23:04 (three years ago)

(Ben bondy)

brimstead, Wednesday, 6 April 2022 23:04 (three years ago)

yea he's on a tear. seemingly playing relatively frequently in nyc but i keep missing him. also - you were otm re: that HTRK soundtrack album

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Thursday, 7 April 2022 02:02 (three years ago)

Perila, especially the how much time is it between you and me album

paolo, Thursday, 7 April 2022 06:59 (three years ago)

love this new Croatian Amor album, thanks v much for the recommendation.

going back to mono no aware, I still find Ayya's "Second Mistake" amazing. seems like it's the only track they ever released?

toby, Friday, 8 April 2022 17:28 (three years ago)

^yes I love that track, it’s amazing!

brimstead, Friday, 8 April 2022 18:05 (three years ago)

they have a SoundCloud page with more tracks:

glad to see the love for the croatian amor album, on repeat for me recently

nxd, Friday, 8 April 2022 21:57 (three years ago)

cosigning the croatian amor love, title track in particular is gorgeous. nice soundtrack for a sunny morning drive today

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Saturday, 9 April 2022 21:33 (three years ago)

the new croatian amor is like the most pop version of this sound, was truly surprised by the DFA style drums on the title track

if you haven't checked out ISA, you should, much darker than this but so good

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Tuesday, 12 April 2022 13:17 (three years ago)

i have no idea what the experimental music thread is anymore, so i am putting this here, where it may belong more appropriately anyways:

https://deletedeletedeleted.bandcamp.com/album/notebook

"south side" is on repeat in my household. fairly unclassifiable soundtrack/noise/ambient vibes with an emotional undercurrent that sets it apart from the typical synth product demo / twee plant-shop ambient stuff

brimstead, Tuesday, 3 December 2024 19:25 (one year ago)

this is great. perfect winter music and very apt for the thread

Hey this album is really good isn't it? Sadly I had to turn it off the other night despite enjoying because a couple of tracks had vocal snippets and samples that were affecting me being able to read my book, but this is really nice

the wedding preset (dog latin), Tuesday, 11 February 2025 16:42 (one year ago)

yep, still go back to it

nxd, Tuesday, 11 February 2025 16:45 (one year ago)

which one, croatian amor?

realizing more and more the influence (we can use that term now right?) of steve roach on some of this stuff

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWdZv0sIN48

not really CA like but the uneasy minimal vibe feels general over avant electronics nowadays

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Tuesday, 11 February 2025 17:04 (one year ago)

had an oof moment when I went to stream some Croatian Amor music last month and their top streamed song was “LA Hills Burn At The Peak Of Winter”

off their 2013 album, even
