ron (ron), Sunday, 5 January 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I respect their songwriting abilities, but I must say this record is just too coffeetable for me.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 6 January 2003 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
ok i see that i said that i love this. it got a bit old. but hey check this out, if you like aluminum group you should get the album 'can't stop singing' by bauer. it is in a similar vein but much better

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Not as good as Pelo.

kinski (kinski), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Not as good as Pelo.

Hmmm... I liked Pelo a lot at the time, but find myself spinning Happyness much more lately -- there's something nice and efficient about it, without the filler of "Sermon to the Frogs" or the off-kilter "Tom of Finland."

BTW, More Happyness doesn't technically come out until early next year but you can order it from the Wishing Tree website, and they'll send it to you now. I've heard it; it's in the same vein as Happyness, stylistically, but I haven't quite warmed up to it yet.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ok yes yes but BAUER!!! ;-)

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i couldn't bring myself to start a thread and there seem to be a grand total of 0 mentions of bauer on ilm, it's all judah bauer blah blah

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, I don't get the reference. Who or what is "Bauer"?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Bauer is the band whose CD is going to be your next purchase! specifically "can't stop singing". you'd better get cracking though, it took like a month for the one i ordered to arrive. i recommend going the internet route

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Are The Aluminum Group going to follow in Spritualised / Spiritualized's footsteps and change their name to The Aluminium Group in order to "crack" Britain?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And having just seen "Introducing" in a second hand shop on my last break, is it worth picking up as I know nothing about this band but suddenly feel interested in them? Tell me if it's worth spending my cash on please!

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing as nobody said anything, I went off and bought the recent Elbow CD (with free DVD), so there.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob, you didn't give the Americans a chance to wake up!

I'd never heard of Introducing the Aluminum Group before. I just found a listing for it on Amazon.de: It looks like a best-of their first three albums, which could be a very good introduction, if that's what you're looking for. (Although I haven't actually heard their very first album.) I don't think they have any one album that I'd say is their definitive best or most representative, so it's probably as good as any.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, sorry for my hastiness - I shall pop along and get it tomorrow anyway, I reckon.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I find them a bit sickly on record times, a bit ungraspable and wilfully obscure, but their Prada-suited iceberg-backdrop iPod-in-pockets live show at the Fez in NYC last year was top-kwal laff-a-mo' entertainment and hopefully they'll be as adorable at the Bush Hall this weekend (www.chickfactor.com/story).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've found them hit-or-miss live. This is usually dependent, however, on how well equipped the venue is for their iPod set-up. (Although it usually works better than the shows during the period after they dissolved the full band and before they discovered iPod, where they'd just play acoustic guitar and keyboard.) John and Frank's banter, however, is ALWAYS entertaining.

four years pass...

New album, "Little Happyness," streaming here. It's wonderful (if you already dig 'em)!

I didn't see this! Will listen now.

Also wtf at Jon starting this thread!

jaymc, Friday, 25 January 2008 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Just paid for a download of this from Minty Fresh - then the download link wouldn't work. I also noticed that the site indicates that the .zip of the album will be 42 MB, which means that the bitrate of the mp3s is gonna blow. When are record labels going to learn?

Davey D, Friday, 25 January 2008 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

fourteen years pass...

New record coming out, titled The Aluminum Group; 10 brand new songs, produced and engineered by Dave Trumfio, Frank and John Navin.

Starting April Fool’s Day, a new single each Friday. The full new Aluminum Group record launches last Friday of the month on social media and Bandcamp.

YAHOO!

This is great news, I feared we'd heard the last of them.

Underpriced $7 for the new record, now on Bandcamp. Hope they load the Happiness albums for sale, too, so I can replace an iTunes "Little Happiness" download with .wavs.

Oh cool, I've been enjoying the weekly singles but forgot the album was coming out this soon. Gonna grab it now!

I'd totally missed news about this until Greg Kot featured it in a recent Sound Opinions episode. Yay!
