Gerry Rafferty, Mr. Baker Street himself, actually produced the original "Shoot Out the Lights" sessions for Richard & Linda Thompson. (They ultimately nixed the recordings.) In turn, R&L provide backing vocals on "Night Owl."

I used to own both "Night Owl" and "Snakes and Ladders" when I was 13. Both had good songs, I recall.

"baker st." is one of those songs where everyone remembers the chorus but never really remembers the more intricate verses.. kinda like beach boy's "good vibrations" (to non beach boys fans that is). what sets "baker st." apart is that very memorable chorus has NO WURDS!

Right Down The Line is great, too, except for that awkward part where I think he's trying to squeeze the lyric ''You've been as constant as the Northern Star (the brightest star that shines),'' into too short a period of time in the song. The musician behind one of the most recognisable saxophone solos - on Gerry Rafferty's hit Baker Street - has died.

Raphael Ravenscroft, 60, who found fame almost overnight following the release of the 1978 track, died following a suspected heart attack early on Sunday.

He was reportedly paid only £27 for the session with a cheque that bounced while the song is said to have earned Rafferty £80,000 a year in royalties.

In a radio interview in 2011, Ravenscroft said the song annoyed him.

"I'm irritated because it's out of tune," he said.
