I say Firehose.

that's sooo tough: I can't decide! a draw it is I'm afraid.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

You are insane. Minutemen by a country mile (or 600). fIREHOSE's first couple records are okay, but dang didn't they go for a downward slide.

hstencil, Monday, 25 November 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

yah Minutemen had that "we've been playing since we were 13 yrs old" kinetic energy and fIREHOSE stalled after a while. but i really love ragin full on, ifn and fromohio and LIVE TOTEM POLE EP still gets played REGULARLY since i was 15

chaki (chaki), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

ed fROMOHIO, bless his heart, does not hold a candle to d. boon.

minutemen by 30 lengths.

gygax!, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Firehouse kicks all their asses!

Down, boy.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I gotta say minutemen. "double nickles" is just way too classic. RIP D. Boon. I fucking miss that guy.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

(pbuh)

(although meh vs. zzzz, to be honest)

jones (actual), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the minutemen, but i don't think firehose gets the credit it deserves either. i still find their records very listenable.

angelo (angelo), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I just think Firehose takes it from punk even further and jazzier.

David Allen, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Nigga Please...........Minutemen all the way!!!!

dead dead bird, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Minutemen without a doubt.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

nine years pass...

fIRHOSE getting back together for Coachella and George Hurley and Mike Watt are playing Minutemen songs at All Tomorrow's Parties.

Kinda surprised there isn't a dedicated fIREHOSE thread.

two months pass...

there's a comp coming of their two CBS albums, the totem pole ep and some out-takes. it's really good.

brokering (pimping) (stevie), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't heard much fIREHOSE other than the first album, but I got "Blaze" from their last album on a Columbia sampler cassette and it's really my favorite of both bands.

it doesn't sound much like any of the other mm/fH stuff I've heard.

yeah, that's pretty kickass. funny though how little like either minutemen or early firehouse it sounds, though. to me, it sounds like something that might have come out on homestead in the late 80s, or anywhere out of the indie woodwork in the early 90s (which it did). but with a better rhythm section than most.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

Their first CBS album was pretty great. Second one was abysmally, depressingly bad.

Original thread question is completely ridic. Get outta here.

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

I think fIREHOSE is fairly under appreciated, but being in the shadow of The Minutemen, it is not surprising. The Minutemen pretty much cut their own path, created their own sound and left one of the more indelible records of the 80s with Double Nickels on the Dime. That said, even as a huge fan of the band, the Minutemen's two follow ups that came afterwards with Project Mersh and 3 Way Tie for Last are to me more hit and miss than most of the fIREHOSE records that followed. I definitely like Ragin' Full On, Fromohio and Flyin' the Flannel more than the last two Minutemen releases.

Then again, I really like 'em both bands pretty well and could say they are both definite favorites.

Man, listening to that Columbia fIREHOSE comp, a lot of this stuff did not age well at all. Some of the stuff on Flyin' the Flannel doesn't sound far off of jambands like moe. or w/e.

Definitely prefer the Watt sung tracks. I remembered this stuff a lot more fondly before I spun this.

Is there much of anything else that sounds like Blaze?

I really like "Brave Captain". Also, donated.

Did he and Watt have a falling out? I've always wondering why fIREHOSE never got back together for a proper tour after that handful of dates several years back.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 11 October 2020 16:35 (five years ago)

Watt donated $500 to the GoFundMe so can't be that bad

Phew, based on the updates today it seems like this was very fortuitously timed; he had to make a emergency visit for what turned out to be a thrombosis (and admits he wouldn't have gone if he didn't know he had some money in the bank).

covidsbundlertanze op. 6 (Jon not Jon), Monday, 12 October 2020 03:55 (five years ago)

This is so strange because over the last four days I have been listening to firehose for the first time in maybe 25 years and really appreciating it

covidsbundlertanze op. 6 (Jon not Jon), Monday, 12 October 2020 03:57 (five years ago)

Sigga has uppped it to 25k now and it looks like it's nearly there, so great! I hope Ed gets his leg sorted out, that could have been a close call.

fIREHOSE were my first major band crush as a late teen, love that band unreservedly.

Ed update from https://www.gofundme.com/f/ed-fromohio-firehose-crawford-needs-our-help

Update direct from Ed fROMOHIO!
This is the text that I just got earlier from Ed:
"Life has been punching me up and down but I believe I have survived it! So let the rest of the world know thanks to everyone's very kind donations, there will be some Ed fROMOHIO / Ed Crawford (Both are correct) tunes shortly on some online shit."

I will of course be keeping up with him to figure out when and where he will be posting his new stuff so that we can all collectively dig on it. This is the best news I have got from Ed in a couple years. I'll take it. Edit - I just spent 3 hours on the phone with Ed. He's doing as well as he can be doing. He's writing a lot of new songs and he even played me a few. All things considered, he sounds great. He's physically healthy and trying to get his mental health squared away at the moment, which is absolutely huge. I couldn't be more proud of him and his forward progress. I've been waiting a while to be able to say that and here we are. This really is great news. Thanks for caring about Ed!
