Remaindered 7" Singles My Dad Brought Home around 1986-1988

After the divorce my dad had the loft converted, and the old record player went up there. He was in the habit of buying mystery packs of bundled unsold 7" singles from somewhere, and they were all very much not to his taste, so I took them up to the loft and would listen to them every weekend. Now I think about it this might be because I was very keen on playing records and he didn't want me messing with his collection if possible.

These must have started arriving around 1986 because I remember my mother confiscating and I guess throwing away Women In Chains by Waysted. The latest is dated 1988.

I got these in a box along with a load of other crap when I came back to the UK a few years ago, and so far have listened to exactly one of them. Are any of them any good? It's been three decades, you decide for me.

I have no expectations of any of these being worth anything.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 13 May 2021 10:44 (four years ago)

i've got the 12" which is only worth four quid. soul collectors, what are they like?

building a hole (NickB), Thursday, 13 May 2021 10:46 (four years ago)

that naked eyes record is fantastic too and i couldve voted for that as well. if you don't know it, it's tony mansfield, the guy behind new musik etc. kind of thomas dolby-eque pop music without the wacky edge, great song

building a hole (NickB), Thursday, 13 May 2021 10:50 (four years ago)

think they had way more success in the US than they did in the UK?

building a hole (NickB), Thursday, 13 May 2021 10:51 (four years ago)

having a listen to it for the first time in three decades, it's ok, not wildly impressed. the Keni Burke is sounding as good as promised though, sure my crappy record player didn't do a great job on that bassline back then.

Keni Burke and it isn't close.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Thursday, 13 May 2021 11:02 (four years ago)

have owned two of those singles at some point:

echo & the bunnymen - bring on the dancing horses: bought it unheard when it came out, was at the height of my bunnymen fandom but wasn't really that impressed with it tbh, felt like them going through the motions

raf ravenscroft - maxine: got it a few years back at a carboot, going on the cover i thought it would be some daft disco nonsense at worst, but god it's horrible aor soft rock dreck iirc, really foul

i see that any trouble record around all the time but still have no idea what it is. it looks gross though

building a hole (NickB), Thursday, 13 May 2021 11:07 (four years ago)

I know some people love Bring On The Dancing Horses but yeah it's one of my least favourite Bunnymen singles.

Raf Ravenscroft is apparently the Baker Street sax solo guy.

Not Bob Holness?

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Thursday, 13 May 2021 11:43 (four years ago)

ha! i've actually got a record by bob holness's daughter that's from about the same period as these ones, it's fucking great:

oh wait, his other daughter was in toto coelo, i'd forgotten about that. i have two records by bob holness's kids, what a blessed life i lead

building a hole (NickB), Thursday, 13 May 2021 11:52 (four years ago)

turns out that raf ravenscroft's dad was the guy who wrote this wack classic:

Ravenscroft claimed that the book was based on research "by using mystical meditation" and on the papers of the Austrian anthroposophist Walter Stein given to Ravenscroft by his widow.[2][3] Ravenscroft originally claimed to have met Stein, but later only claimed contact through a medium with Walter Stein's spirit.[4]

his daughter has a very extensive wikipedia entry with only a handful of citations, she is an augmented reality artist.

i suppose my opinion of that biz depends when the augmentation happens

"Women in Chains" by Waysted would have been the best thing here! Dud move by mom.

I used to have the Bootsy Collins album that single came from. That was the period when he used to go around wearing handcuffs bc he was trying to "lock the funk in." I forgot about that record after I discovered 1970s Bootsy but it's quite possible "Party on Plastic" would be a kick to drop on the turntable now.

I can understand my mum's POV, being the most moralistic feminist in the hippy commune where we lived (and at the time a practicing Catholic to), she did not want her son to listen to sexist heavy metal songs, I wasn't even allowed toy guns. it does sound good now though, more of a dangerous edge than other music of its sort.
the kid in the next flat used to listen to WASP.

A bit like my mum not allowing me to buy David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” single in the pic sleeve, and I had to settle for “Live and let Die” instead. Because, you know, you can catch hom from singles...

Love this about the Climax Blues Band song:

The song was specifically written and produced after the manager of the band, Miles Copeland III, demanded that the band append a radio-friendly song to the track listing. The band at the time had released eight albums and although that had translated into fame, they did not have a great impact on the charts.[6] Copeland suggested a cover version of an Elvis Presley song; this suggestion was ignored, and instead the band came up with an original composition[7] "from absolutely nowhere". It was simply a case of sitting in the studio, conjuring up a rhythm, appending the traditional dual vocals for which Climax Blues Band were known, and coming up with a couple of hooks. The sudden emergence of the song irritated the producer, as he thought the band had been withholding a hit from him.[4]

i am voting matt bianco "don't blame it on me" because of the flipside "wap bam boogie" which is somehow among my earliest pop music memories. it was playing in the car from one of my mom's mix cassettes (or dancey compilations, i don't remember which) and my brother and i thought it was v silly and funny

i don't think i've heard any of the others and i don't recall what the a-side sounds like at all but there ya go

dyl, Friday, 14 May 2021 03:09 (four years ago)

limmy danced to Wap Bam Boogie on his show once, I could not believe what I was hearing, thought it was such an obscure (and not really very good) b-side

was wondering why john miles albums are always in the charity shops, he must've been pretty big at one point. turns out he's the guy who wrote that terrible 'music' song ('music is my first love...' - yeuch!), always thought that was barry manilow or neil sedaka or something

building a hole (NickB), Friday, 14 May 2021 08:13 (four years ago)

John Miles' real name is almost the same as mine - same (fairly unusual) surname, same first initial - so am very glad that he chose to use a pseudonym for his awful drippy music

well this is depressing:

Matt Fretton

Eighties pop singer who had a hit with It’s So High reaching number 50 in the charts, performed on Top of the Pops and supported bands such as Depeche Mode and Eurythmic, before becoming an agent for classical musicians.
He committed suicide aged 49, on October 29, 2013, two months after the accidental death of his partner, photographer Sussie Ahlburg.

Sussie Ahlburg

Photographer, born in Stockholm and studied photography at Central School of Art, London.
She drowned while swimming in the Hampstead Bathing Pond on August 4, 2013.

yeah I was really quite sad and shocked when matt fretton died, it's my favourite record here and it was the first i had heard about him since I was a kid. before his death he was working on his first music in decades, some beautiful ambient talk talk style stuff, I read that his daughter was going to finish it and release it but have heard nothing since then. it felt like his death went almost unremarked upon, but he was on TOTP and the cover of smash hits. there is a good interview with him on a Depeche mode website somewhere, he used to support them on tour.

i don't really know who he is tbh, his time in the limelight completely passed me by

let me quote myself:

Hope I can make you happy with this 1983 follow-up project to Stars on 45, again wildly successful in the Netherlands and Belgium and mildly so in other parts of Europe. In the US it only reached bubbling under status (if my source is to be trusted), so I’m guessing you may have never heard it. It sounds *even more* unlike 80s pop radio than that Beatles medley. May I present to you: the Star Sisters!
