this one is really cool, doesn't quite sound like anything else in the whigs' discography with the banjo, and has a ramshackle feel despite the classic whigs soar to it

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 00:35 (three years ago) link

the original is a decent enough song but their cover really transforms it completely for the better

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 00:36 (three years ago) link

i loooooove "mr. superlove"

the original Ass Ponys version was produced by John Curley from the Whigs too

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 01:37 (three years ago) link

still reeling from the news of that "Regret" cover

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 01:39 (three years ago) link

would argue it is the best cover of all time xp

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 01:45 (three years ago) link

"creep" cover is amazing ofc, always felt a kinship with the whigs bc they covered six-year-old me's favorite song

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 01:45 (three years ago) link

i'm guessing "lost in the supermarket" took this? great result tbh, despite my earlier complaining

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 01:47 (three years ago) link

real three dimensional cover

1. The Afghan Whigs - Lost in the Supermarket
94 points, 6 voters
originally performed by The Clash, written by Strummer/Jones
released on Burning London: The Clash Tribute
studio version

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 01:50 (three years ago) link

really stunning cover, love the "train in vain" drums & snippets at the end, and those soaring backing vocals!

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 01:52 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I had that as my #2, which is fine, as my left field #1 didn’t place.

Honky’s Ladder EP apparently also had this other non-original which I hadn’t known about until just now:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph_yW2OHKFE

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 01:56 (three years ago) link

there are so many dulli covers i had no idea about before doing this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHoY0cTiGbk

"be for real" was a real favourite (from the beautiful girls soundtrack but even better than "can't get enough of your love babe") but i only discovered it right before voting closed

the "when you sleep" cover was also another i had no idea at all about until it showed up in someone's ballot

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 02:05 (three years ago) link

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 04:17 (three years ago) link

just spitballing here but i could imagine them taking the Cure's 'fascination st' by the scruff of the neck and making it tuff and funky and vicious

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 04:21 (three years ago) link

iirc the Lost In The Supermarket cover was recorded after the band split (it's just Dulli and Curley, plus Susan Marshall and the drum track), so they go from that to Lovecrimes

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 04:24 (three years ago) link

great work ufo!!

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 04:24 (three years ago) link

it was released march 1999 and they were still touring behind 1965 until september or so

the tracks released between then & 2012 are "nightime" (a big star cover) which was recorded in 1996 but not released until 2006 for a tribute album, and "i'm a soldier" and "magazine" on the greatest hits comp, which were tracks they originally demoed in 2000 in the failed sessions for their planned next album before breaking up, but they finished recording them in 2006 for the greatest hits album

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 04:29 (three years ago) link

yeah I was cheating the Unbreakable tracks as not-entirely-new recordings there. ty for fact check

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 04:36 (three years ago) link

surely a high-water mark for guest vocalists in an ILM poll

Think I was the only one to vote for Martin Eden.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 14:46 (three years ago) link

it's a great song but I suspect the vote count was low because it feels so much (to me at least) like an intro in the context of the album. "Black out the windows / it's party time" definitely in contention for best/most Dulli line though obv

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 June 2021 17:03 (three years ago) link

yeah it's quite good but not quite as good as the other blackberry belle songs i voted for which generally do a similar thing

ufo, Saturday, 19 June 2021 17:07 (three years ago) link

Simon H otm about party time! LOL
I also want to shout out this lesser Twilight Singers song "Domani" that always sounded very quintessentially Dulli to me. Emotional swells in the chorus, talkin bout drugs & being high, a well-placed "yeah", it's just musically delicious in every way to me.

idk why there is an animated girl in the video + i apologize if this song has already been discussed. i just listened to it and got a little excited :)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 19 June 2021 19:27 (three years ago) link

‘do you want to make party?’ very much the theme of the full-band 1965-era show i saw

mookieproof, Saturday, 19 June 2021 19:41 (three years ago) link

Finally listening to and enjoying “I’m a Soldier” and wondering who is the one person who voted for it.

Party at the mansion, y’all

Looks like nobody voted for that one.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 21:35 (three years ago) link

Hope it’s not too late to change my ballot

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 21:41 (three years ago) link

xp I voted for I’m A Soldier! def a half-remembered/impressionistic vote as I remember being impressed by it when that Unbreakable comp came out - listening to it now maybe it feels a little like a collection of great bits that don’t totally cohere but I really dig the restrained tension of the intro and I still think it’s a cool tune

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Saturday, 19 June 2021 23:06 (three years ago) link

No worries. Feel like there are no wrong answers in this poll, at least in the upper reaches.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 June 2021 23:34 (three years ago) link

Should I still be listening after the poll is over?

WIkipedia says when they toured the album they would interpolate the one song into the other.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 14:12 (three years ago) link

And I guess they did it later as well.

Rich Valley Girl, Poor Valley Girl (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 14:18 (three years ago) link

they do that a lot! the other day i youtubed a live performance of Faded that started with I Can't Make You Love Me -- tbrrwu I heard the opening chords on the piano and my face literally exploded with tears, then the Bonnie Raitt song? Then more Faded? I felt like I had an ecstatic experience aka that's what the best Whigs shows felt like.

I think a lot of it's just time constraints, but I can be quite monomaniacal about bands - only really sticking to or only needing/able to handle a single record, maybe two or three at a push. What I love about the polls on here, among other things, is how they open up discographies and force one to listen to a wider range. Short version: this band, and offshoots eh?

This isn't any great revelation, but it strikes me that Dulli does quite a lot with not very much: particular rhythms, themes of betrayal and desperation, the endorphin rush of drugs and love and fucking, the vocal lines that complement those themes and don't venture a huge amount beyond 'baaayybeee, let me/can I/will you...' Which is his own kind of monomania and thank god for it.

I've only heard Black Love, and only liked "Night by Candlelight" on that, which I see got no votes. Is there likely anything else in their work for me?
