...and you can love him any way that you please. I'm speaking, of course, of Yellowman. I've always loved his voice and a few of his songs ("Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt," "Budget," "Computerize"), but where does he fit into the whole DJ/Dancehall scene? Does he still get respect in Jamaica? What you do think of him?

I thought of Yellowman when I saw a Michael Jackson thread. Yellow was ahead of the game when he wrote "Beat It" in 1986:

Michael Jackon makes me mad
He make me mad
Michael Jackson makes me mad
He make me mad
Just beat it

What a cornball -- but that voice!

shit, I didn't know he was the one that did "Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt." love that track, Eazy E sampled it to good effect on his E-Z Duz It record.

he's WAY underrated. My buddy Nasa went on a Yelloman bingle when we were, like, 12. We'd shovel driveways till we had enough for an album, I'd buy a K Solo tape, he's buy a Yelloman album on Shanachie. I made fun of him for years until I actually listened. Yelloman is truly one of a kind!

might be underrated elsewhere but in Jamaica he's huge, or at least was in the 80s, like Bob Marley-huge. not sure about now but i'm sure he still known and respected there.

what a criminally short thread :- (

I went to Sunsplash in 1984 and the Yella Fella was undisputed King of Reggae that year, headlining and performing after Gregory Isaacs (who was probably headliner in '83). He was dropped off by a helicopter--started his set at about sunrise if I remember correctly, though there's not much chance of that :)
