In Flames

Cocteau Twins, maybe? I mean, they had a drum machine not an actual drummer, but they left off the drums for one album (Victorialand) and it's one of their best.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Thursday, 1 July 2021 22:32 (three years ago)

I think Mark E Smith left the Fall's drummer at a gas station and then went and played a big festival with the Chemical Brothers manager filling in on drums

xp maybe REM, along similar lines.

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 02:41 (three years ago)

^uh… no

delta variant blues (morrisp), Friday, 2 July 2021 03:03 (three years ago)

Nothing at all against Bill Berry's drumming, or the REM songs with drums. I just happen to really live a few of the drummerless tracks on Automatic, though i know a lot of ppl don't like that one.

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 03:09 (three years ago)

*love

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 03:09 (three years ago)

Like, i wouln't complain if they'd done a bit more of that stuff

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 03:12 (three years ago)

Metallica

Though that's less of case of them being better without drums and more me enjoying the idea of Lars Ulrich getting left behind at a bus station

MarkoP, Friday, 2 July 2021 05:11 (three years ago)

Bands made worse by their bass player falling under a bus

^ too soon

StanM, Friday, 2 July 2021 08:46 (three years ago)

Most one-person black metal bands.

pomenitul, Friday, 2 July 2021 10:05 (three years ago)

My Bloody Valentine

pomenitul, Friday, 2 July 2021 10:06 (three years ago)

are we supposed to be imagining a drum machine instead or nothing at all? assuming the latter

anyway unless indie rhythm sections have improved a hell a lot when I wasn't looking this would improve most of those bands esp the UK ones. did oasis really need a drummer for example

MBV = fighting words, Colm is a legend

how about The Cure post Boris?

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 2 July 2021 13:07 (three years ago)

but this is hard because if a band has a lousy drummer I usually don’t like them in the first place

Thinking about what Oasis would sound like without a drummer led me to this video - all the comments about Noel Gallagher's virtuosity are kind of amazing:

I saw the Fall right after he sacked his whole band and hired his opening act as his new band, want to say 2006. It was at the Varsity Theater in MPLS.

I was at that show! ilxor cbesinger's band opened that night

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 2 July 2021 15:43 (three years ago)

I believe the band (aka the TLC aka Three Lazy Cunts) actually quit on MES before he could fire them & Narnack hooked him up with three guys in LA (aka the Dudes [featuring the only beard in Fall history]) who he finished out the rest of the tour with. They had played like, ten shows or something before Mpls, but they did essentially rehearse (sans MES) during soundcheck, which was a whole thing.

I think I talked to Orpheo the drummer and asked what it was like and he smiled and said "crazy"

chr1sb3singer, Friday, 2 July 2021 15:52 (three years ago)

Also, agreed on this

but this is hard because if a band has a lousy drummer I usually don’t like them in the first place

This makes me think of Robbie Fulks wondering: "I don’t know what authority decreed that Gordon Lightfoot’s music, like all other commercially viable music these past 70 years, must have non-tonal banging in the form of a drumset mic-ed six or ten ways[...]A non-creative drummer is very often like a brash flight attendant standing over you and explaining how seatbelts buckle."

Ahah N. Gallagher and virtuosity in the same sentence. He might be the worst « famous » guitarist. He’s guy playing alone on the beach/in a park level...

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 2 July 2021 16:27 (three years ago)

And as for their first drummer, he was « limited » but the basic madchester beats were less annoying than the drum rolls/breaks that followed...

Planck Generation (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 July 2021 16:46 (three years ago)

that's kind of unfair though - maybe he has to play that way to make the rest sound in tune?

StanM, Friday, 2 July 2021 17:04 (three years ago)

I imagine this is the result of multiple takes, with the producer or engineer reminding him that the tempo is actually faster than he thinks it is at the end of each one.

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 17:54 (three years ago)

His guitar playing always sounds so lackadaisical in the mix, it's surprising to hear him push himself.

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 18:02 (three years ago)

I was at that show! ilxor cbesinger's band opened that night

Really? Cause I don’t think there was an opening act at all, just a film of glitched footage of Led Zeppelin.

KEEP HONKING -- I'M BOBOING (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 2 July 2021 18:43 (three years ago)

And yeah, it wasn’t immediately after the break up cause I think I had already read about it on the internets.

KEEP HONKING -- I'M BOBOING (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 2 July 2021 18:46 (three years ago)

oh ok yeah different show then because this one was right after

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 2 July 2021 18:49 (three years ago)

i'm not sure how the thread made it this far without mentioning the sacking of ex-radiohead stickman phil selway

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Friday, 2 July 2021 19:03 (three years ago)

The general media blackout is more perplexing still

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:35 (three years ago)

3 members of radiohead have been sacked, you'd expect p4k or someone to notice.

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:37 (three years ago)

I've heard of lazy journalism but damn

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:37 (three years ago)

Gay Dad was a lot better without their drummer too

StanM, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:42 (three years ago)

3 members of Rhead are gone? who's left?

calstars, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:44 (three years ago)

Thom Yorke's nose

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Friday, 2 July 2021 19:49 (three years ago)

everyone except for jonny (and thom, obviously) were sacked after they realized they could just play as a trio with tom skinner.

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Friday, 2 July 2021 19:57 (three years ago)

their debut was a few weeks ago at digital glastonbury

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Friday, 2 July 2021 19:58 (three years ago)

spacemen 3 and spectrum seem to resent having to use drums on their albums, even most of their rockier stuff is like “ok bass drum, tambourine, some crash symbols every now and then and were good”. maybe it’s part of why the relentless drum machining on “revolution” sounds so shocking and intense

brimstead, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:59 (three years ago)

what I saw about Radiohead was that it's a side project called Smile

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 2 July 2021 20:05 (three years ago)

Don't you believe it, they did a succesful trial run several years ago with a cr78 before recruiting skinner

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 20:12 (three years ago)

I liked the drumming on earlier Tangerine Dream records, but it was a good idea not to use any on Zeit.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 2 July 2021 20:22 (three years ago)

The drummer was still in the group, though.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 2 July 2021 20:22 (three years ago)

yeah, he hit the sack for that record.

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Friday, 2 July 2021 20:31 (three years ago)

Could the poster Karl 'Sticks' Malone please tell us about their experience of being abandoned at a gas station by Portugal. The man? What was that like?

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 3 July 2021 13:37 (three years ago)

How would you rate the other drummers Portugal. The man have left at a bus station, Sticks?

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 3 July 2021 13:40 (three years ago)

i wasn't the first drummer for P.tm. i found them at an after party for Relix. i was very out of it and confused as to what their group was. it was all the way new orleans with them before the beignets finally won out and i had to go

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Saturday, 3 July 2021 16:52 (three years ago)

they were definitely better off without me, i disagreed with their entire direction in retrospect, although they are VERY nice

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Saturday, 3 July 2021 16:52 (three years ago)

Suicide never needed a drummer and that’s explicitly what they were going for.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 4 July 2021 02:50 (three years ago)

I like the drum machine on The Jesus & Mary Chain's Darklands but I wouldn't say it made the band better.
