For those who'd like to read Dave Rimmer's reviews without squinting (plus you get to check out the full page Freddie Mercury ad facing them):

Dull week, but the reviews are amusing this time, and generally on point.

Voted U2. I know...

Tina!

that's not my post, Saturday, 31 July 2021 21:01 (four years ago)

voted for lost in music without reading the fine print - still feel pretty comfortable doing so regardless (even though it probably is really U2)

Strictly speaking, we should be looking at the 1984 remix of "Lost In Music", as this was very much the version that got played at the time.

General Public "Tenderness" is greyed out on the playlist for UK Spotifiers, so here's the YT:

I was having a bit of a musical lull in the autumn of 1984, and the personal charts were on a break. From this week's crop, I bought Bronski Beat, the Sister Sledge remix and Bambaataa/Brown on 12-inch, and the David Lasley on bargain bin 7-inch (to see what all the fuss was about, but it didn't much grab me). UB40, David Bowie and Wham! were tape-them-off-the-radio jobs, "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" didn't shift my usual antipathy to U2, and I don't think I ever heard the rest. "Lost In Music" did much better in the UK in its remixed version than the 1979 original, and I danced to it many, many times - as I also did to "Why?", which at the time I even preferred to "Smalltown Boy". Rimmer nails it with "Blue Jean" - the video premiere was momentarily a big event, but dull's the word.

George Michael sang on two of the best songs regarding 'freedom' ever

This is the fantastic 1984 remix and probably my favourite version of the song

that Shakin' Stevens song has a rather odd video in which his sweetheart is being held against her will in a locked room at a stately home, so Shaky gets in a light aircraft and skywrites 'ALWAYS YOURS' outside her window

I have a good one lined up to go next. Actually, I have at least four good ones.

Would have gone with "Blue Jean" for years, but now it's lapped by Bronski Beat.
