Stylee question

Can anyone explain why and when the spelling of the word "style" was changed to "stylee"? Does the alteration in spelling affect the word's meaning? Finally, is "stylee" ever spoken aloud (I don't think I've heard it) and if so, how is it pronounced?

Im guessing its the same illiterates who came up with 'Riddums.'

I vaguely recall having heard the Beastie Boys referring to something as having some sort of "[insert B-Boy adjective here] STYLEE".

Do either of those predate "Freaky Styley"? (1985)

Because it rhymes with more words?

I think it comes from ragga / reggae. Commonly used by non-Jamaicans in an ironic, eh, stylee (pron.: sty-LEE)

I first heard it in reggae, probably as early as 1981 (e.g., from Mikey Dread's Beyond World War III, "Israel (12 Tribe) Stylee").

Not that that's where I probably heard it first.
