All the records you DO NOT own

Here's where you list the records that you don't have but feel like you should have for whatever reason.

Otherwise known as "Gaping Holes in Your Collection".

this is easy.

hstencil, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

In my case:

- anything by Elvis Costello (once had "Spike" and "Mighty Like A Rose" but lost both)
- anything by the Ramones (okay, I do have "Mania" but no proper albums)
- anything by Eric Dolphy
- anything by the Talking Heads, other than "Naked" which I do have, but which isn't very representative of their stuff in general

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i have not heard of ANYTHING on hstencil's wants list.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It's mostly free jazz and improv - hard-to-find stuff, I reckon, although I do have "Nipples" on MP3.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

As I have every single Talking Heads on vinyl except for THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS...it creates a noticeable gap in my record collection.

I'm cospicuously missing all Beastie Boys albums, too...but this is because I once owned all their albums, but they were all stolen (by the same ex-girlfriend who also stole my Roni Size - Reprezent and my Miles Davis - Bitches Brew).

nickalicious, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got the CD reish of it, but for some reason I'd like to have the vinyl.

{/nutty record collector}

hstencil, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think it's nutty - as with any collectible item, the original is going to be worth more than a reissue. Do you listen to the records, or do you keep them sealed to maximize potential value?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

For a start three out of print albums I don't have but need urgently:
- Giant Sand: Love Songs
- Neil Young: On the Beach
- Gun Club: Miami

I'm not that nutty! Just about everything I own, I listen to. I did find a sealed copy of the Archie Shepp/Philly Joe Jones LP on America in Milwaukee (for $20, I've seen fux0RED copies at JRM in Chi-town for $75) a few years ago, and haven't opened that, but yeah, I like to listen to records, not just look at them and imagine what they sound like.

hstencil, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I see, I was just hypothesizing a reason why you might prefer the vinyl to a CD reissue. There are others: preferring the sound of vinyl (not to mention that many CD reissues have poorer sound than the originals); preferring to own the original artifact (cover, sleeve, etc.) for intangible reasons; because records are more fun to listen to (I can relate to that, seeing that I recently got a turntable, so I'm listening to vinyl again for the first time in about 15 years).

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

too damn many is the answer.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep on picking up 'Solid Air' in HMV, but I always put it down again. I'm beginning to wonder if I ever will actually buy the damn thing.

DavidM (DavidM), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been needing some Aphex Twin for a long time. But soon this will change. Soon...

too many wants... :(
never knew it was that high

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to maintain a want list, but the one I have is rather out of date. I guess there just isn't any record I can think of that I really, really want, as I've managed to track down all of my "must-have"s by now.

More fun that way though, when I stumble across something when record shopping and think -- AHA! -- how could I have forgotten about this?

Jen (nstop), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

this list is 1500-strong

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i've already got too many records

(doorag), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't bother keeping a list. Whenver I look through the stacks of CD and vinyl, I'm always tormented by what's missing. But whenever I walk into a record store to order a CD or record, I seem to blank on the stuff I really, really want.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I should start keeping a list in my coat pocket.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Ohmigosh, I just spent TWO WEEKS making a list...of only the *artists* I still need new-or-old records by (not that I may not have some records already by these folks)- and it's already close to 1,000 ? I think...that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to list the records I want.

But I guess I can cut-n-paste an excerpt, how about some of the artists of the past 3 years (99-01) that I wanted to check out records by, but still have not. This is what I spend my time doing, alas

Everything ever released that I don't already have.

I'm serious.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

There is not a single CD I want right now. In fact, I'm trying to sell so that I have as few as possible. I think I will be down to around 40 records when I'm done.
