One of the best records of 2021 and no thread?!

nostormo, Sunday, 12 September 2021 14:43 (three years ago)

I liked the album they did a few years ago, but disliked the song I heard from this album

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 12 September 2021 14:44 (three years ago)

It's a grower if there ever was one.

At first i thought wtf is this childish 90's tribute band? I was wrong.

nostormo, Sunday, 12 September 2021 14:45 (three years ago)

Didn't know who this was, so I just skimmed the first three tracks. Not my thing in the slightest, but enjoy yourselves!

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 12 September 2021 14:45 (three years ago)

...i do think if we were in 1991 this would've been a huge hit

nostormo, Sunday, 12 September 2021 14:47 (three years ago)

Post-hardcore band embraces pop I imagine would interest a lot of people on ILM, inc I thought JF, but I haven't actually heard it so what do I know.

I guess you've prompted me to give it a listen, nostormo.

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 12 September 2021 14:59 (three years ago)

Simon H and Brad turned me on to that album of theirs a few years back

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 12 September 2021 15:00 (three years ago)

I don't get it at all. The hype let me to believe they were some hardcore band thinking outside the box but then I listened to the music and it sounded like 90s alternative radio mixed with 2000s iPod commercial music.

zacata, Sunday, 12 September 2021 15:00 (three years ago)

it was one of the dev hynes collaboration songs that I heard and didn't like

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 12 September 2021 15:03 (three years ago)

i still need to hear this, and i've never knowingly heard a complete turnstile album before so i'm not sure i recommended them to oor

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Sunday, 12 September 2021 15:03 (three years ago)

ok, i'll just blame simon then? lol.

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 12 September 2021 15:08 (three years ago)

I don't get the hype myself and this is theoretically something I should like.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 12 September 2021 15:39 (three years ago)

heh, I googled some reviews and first one I saw was Pitchfork who gave it a BNM

Post-hardcore band embraces pop

Thanks, I'm good with Dag Nasty.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 12 September 2021 16:06 (three years ago)

there was some chatter on the rolling punk thread

grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Sunday, 12 September 2021 16:18 (three years ago)

Totally checks out that ILM is dead silent about the new Turnstile record.

― billstevejim, Thursday, August 12, 2021 12:04 PM (one month ago) bookmarkflaglink

I like them. Saw them the year Time & Space came out and it was a blast.

― gman59, Thursday, August 12, 2021 2:05 PM (one month ago) bookmarkflaglink

Same, they're very fun live. All these new preview tracks are dope and unexpectedly accessible for pop crossover.

This is definitely the first time I've heard any hardcore attempting Wincing The Night Away / Target-commercial millennial whoops. And it's actually somehow good.

re: new Turnstile

― gman59, Friday, August 27, 2021 3:34 PM (two weeks ago) bookmarkflaglink

There isn't a rolling punk 2021 that I can find so I'll post this here.

The Bronx never much impressed me and their Mariachi El Bronx stuff made me roll my eyes.
However the new album that came out today has a spark to it that hits the spot nicely.
It's catchy without being pop-punk a la some of my favorite albums by Supersuckers and Speedealer.

the new turnstile record is fucking great

really want someone to turn the piano intro at the start of "fly again" into a drill instrumental

― grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Wednesday, September 1, 2021 1:04 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

yeah enjoying both the the turnstile and the bronx records. I never really like the bronx but this is fun.

― husked, tonal wails (irrational), Wednesday, September 1, 2021 3:45 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

also the new Chubby and the Gang is fun, not sure if this is wear I would share this

probably a good time for one of those 'whats on your ipod' playlists. or whatever the 2021 equivalent is

― gman59, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 4:44 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

new Turnstile gave me Third Eye Blind vibes

― alpine static, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 4:45 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

Saw the Bronx open for Dropkick (yuk) and Rancid at an outdoor show last night. They were...really good? In fact, they were great! Really surprising tbh.
Rancid were shambolic and excellent per usual, hadn't seen them in more than two decades. Had a nice time despite the swarms of Dropkick fans.

idg turnstile. sounds like incubus

― flopson, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 11:31 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

i know “hardcore” and “hardcore punk” are 2 diff genres (also chubby and the gang are the latter and totally fair game itt) and the former is more of an outgrowth of emo/metal but i was surprised to read on pitchfork that the most innovative thing a hardcore band can do in 2021 is sound like radio alt rock

― flopson, Wednesday, September 1, 2021 11:33 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

They've definitely moved more rock as time goes on but I'm kinda here for it. If Incubus grew up raised by Snapcase.

― husked, tonal wails (irrational), Thursday, September 2, 2021 9:23 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

The surprise veering into non-hardcore directions is consistent with the first two albums. This new one definitely jumps around more frequently and heads down more adventurous avenues, but it would sound gimmicky to me if the record wasn't just as solid as the earlier ones. The jams are still dope.

grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Sunday, 12 September 2021 16:19 (three years ago)

accidentally copied some unrelated posts, oops.

but yeah, i think the record is great and also think the incubus and third eye blind comparisons are not that far off the mark. ok, maybe not the third eye blind one.

grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Sunday, 12 September 2021 16:21 (three years ago)

The more immediate tracks imo are "Fly Again" or "Don't Play" or "Holiday." I would start with those 3 and not with "Mystery" which I did not enjoy at first but 4-5 weeks later I grew to absolutely love.

311 is a closer reference than 3EB.

billstevejim, Sunday, 12 September 2021 17:09 (three years ago)

I also really loved "TLC" right away and it's probably more closely aligned with their earlier stuff.

billstevejim, Sunday, 12 September 2021 17:12 (three years ago)

This was my gateway track
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRDFhI3DNh8

billstevejim, Sunday, 12 September 2021 17:16 (three years ago)

Having given it a listen, I don't like it much. It does remind me of some of the later 90s bands mentioned here I never liked.

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 12 September 2021 17:18 (three years ago)

So after reading this thread i might need to call it a "guilty pleasure" so i wouldn't feel ashamed lol . Seriously though, in the end, it's just an enjoyable, melodic pop punk record with some twists

nostormo, Sunday, 12 September 2021 18:22 (three years ago)

Nothing to be ashamed of at all!

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 12 September 2021 18:25 (three years ago)

and it will still be eligible for metal poll in January

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 12 September 2021 18:26 (three years ago)

Probably my favorite album of the year so far. Zero guilt.
