My A-level English teacher used to say that the best way of understanding a period is to examine the work of its second-rate artists, the first-rate artists being too original and ahead of their time to indicate what was really going on. With that in mind, welcome to October 1976.
A few months ago, inspired by Bob Stanley's superb 76 In The Shade, I did an extended deep dive into the year, in order to construct a follow-up playlist of similarly mellow tunes that could have been heard during its fabled long hot summer. There was a lot to choose from - the whittled down playlist still runs for over eight hours - and I was left thinking that this was a golden age. However, as my research had a strict cut-off point of August 31st, I had no idea what horrors awaited in the autumn. (I don't want to say "this is why punk had to happen", but, y'know.) And this isn't a freakishly bad week, either - all the neighbouring review columns are just as grim.
Have I whetted your appetite? Am I being unfair? There's only one way to find out. So pour yourself a stiff port and lemon, and get stuck into this lot.
