moog produced the theremin commercially, hence "moog theremin".

gygax!, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

D'oh! You and your cursed technicalities!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

but 'moog' as a musical term refers to a certain way of using synths, rather than being specifically made by Moog

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

but 'moog' as a musical term refers to a certain way of using synths, rather than being specifically made by Moog

I'm not sure I follow. Are you implying that a theremin is a synthesizer? Everything I've read on the subject implies otherwise, though honestly, the exact technical distinctions between the two sort of escapes me.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

no, i'm disputing Gygax's point. theremin records definitely != moog records

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah-ha. I see. In any case, the man himself lays it out here.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i meant a 'moog record' doesn't necessarily have to be made with a Moog synth, it can refer to all early analogue synth stuff

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

argh, too slow!

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

zebedee, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Air has some very tasty Moog/Korg synth work, fo' sho'. Whatever the name of the last track on Moon Safari is, that one should go on this list.

zebedee, Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

90. stranglers - nice 'n' sleazy
(or whichever one it is that has that mental greenfield synth solo on it, i think it's '...sleazy')

zebedee, Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the one zebedee - and believe it or not, to me that solo sounds quite like something Keith Emerson could have done during a live show.....

cheers, snowy!

91. barbara thompson's paraphernalia - aliyah

zebedee, Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah zebedee your no. 89 has reminded me - is that solo right at the opening of a Rainbow album that came out in '78 or so? (think the cover has a big god-hand holding a rainbow) 'cos that's a belter too.
Actually considered buying the album just for that solo, in spite of not liking heavy metal atall...

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

of course!

*googles*

92. RAINBOW - TAROT WOMAN!!!

zebedee, Thursday, 28 November 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that a moog in (97.) Roxy Music - "Amazona" (?)

Burr, Thursday, 28 November 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

This new book on the history of the Moog, Analog Days, looks interesting.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 28 November 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

98. Genesis - "Robbery, Assault, & Battery". Jesus, how could I forget that one...smokin

Joe (Joe), Friday, 29 November 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Come on, we're nearly there!

I think we may have 100 songs already actually, although equally I'm inclined to disallow "Space Oddity" since I think that uses a mellotron rather than a synth... so more properly belongs here.

zebedee, Friday, 29 November 2002 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

replace with another Bowie - "Breaking Glass"? only 3 notes, but rippin moog from Eno nonetheless!

zebedee, Friday, 29 November 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Space Oddity does have mellotron, but IIRC the 'solo' sweep was done on a Stylophone....

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Friday, 29 November 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

100. The Past Seven Days - "So Many Others"

There. Phew.

Jeff W, Friday, 29 November 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Lil' Lainie - Delaware (LILLAINE), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Sister Andrea" (Live)
Incredible moog madness.

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Not that was an on-topic post.

Anyway, throwing in a mention of Genesis' "Firth Of Fifth", which was scandalously left off the original thread :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

The REAL scandalous omission is the Beatles' "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." WTF guys? I guess sub it in for the one that was a theremin or whatever. It kicks ass and it has to be one of the earliest ones too.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Nobody mentioned anything on Beaver & Krause's madly brilliant Ragnarok, which needs to be reissued.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

"Love Will Keep Us Together"!

(Anybody else old enuff to remember Captain & Tennille's short-lived variety show on American TV around '76-77? The Cap'n played some very noisy sci-fi stuff that impressed the hell out of the 9-year old me.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)
