totally classic for almost everything but mainly the record where it's got his face in the middle, he looks like an insanely happy beach elf

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Also managed the only classic remix on the two lone swordsmen's ill-fated "Further Reminders".

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

A bit 'eh' when I saw him DJing, though that was mainly because he was on before Isolee's live set, which was awesome.

His stuff on the Perlon comp. is great, and his label put out Further's "Stone Cold", for which I could kiss him.

Actually he's quite kissable in an art-phag sort of way.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

'808 the bassqueen' and his new playhouse 12" - classic all the way. i like his perlon releases but they may be a bit weird for some.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i've only heard "sex for sunglasses" and it's alright.

this album totally rules.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm, not really (although I need to hear it again with that "it's all 'What Time Is Love' remixes with the KLF taken out" story in mind.) But his 11/09/1973 remix of Lopazz - Migracion is special (the Luciano one isn't too bad either :)

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that "mini-LP" isn't rocking my world either. If "Dexter" didn't have that "Heart and Soul"-ish guitar lick on it, then it would have been a rather boring ten-minute track and that's what most of "The au Harem ..." sounds like to me.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldn't/couldn't listen to 'harem...' for 90 minutes straight, but in controlled bursts through headphones i think it's good (although it comes nowhere near matching alcachofa.) also, the vinyl version of 'hierklon' pisses all over the one on the CD. lots longer and much more going on.

a, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, I can't imagine how mammoth the vinyl version would be if every track is extended. Does it end up being over 100 minutes? I know the vinyl also has an extra track not on the cd.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(villalobos contributing a mix to the fabric series, sometime in the next year, apparently)

dh, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Omar!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the vinyl version floating around online in mp3 format anywhere? The only thing I've seen floating around is the cd version with the last track cut off. I thought the cd was a great improvement, but if the vinyl is amazing.... I'd copy it off myself, but I'm not sure my needle is up to the task right now.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Tracer :)...(I'm here all the time, really.)

Fabric mix sure is good news, hope it has loads of "space children from outer space singing" type of tracks on it.

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

'stereobox' isn't on the cd. not every track is extended, just 'hierklon' and possibly 'true to myself' (haven't heard the cd vers of that to confirm, just the fucked up mp3)

a, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

That fucked up mp3 has caused great anguish.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, "True to Myself" is like one of the best tracks! You need to hear it in it's full glory. Perhaps the ripper has cruelly screwed it up in order for you to buy the cd.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"True To Myself" is amazing, far and away my favourite track on this. Actually I may be in the minority in thinking the album gets better as it goes along.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd agree that the last few tracks are probably the most accessible songs on the album.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the people call philip sherburne to the stand

martin turenne, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Alcachofa is WAY better than Au Harem

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'd agree that the last few tracks are probably the most accessible songs on the album."

Somewhat boringly I tend to like Villalobos at his most accessible - but I also love "True To Myself" because it reminds me of Isolee's "I Owe You".

ten months pass...
"dirtyirishhooer - 24-Aug-03 07:17 AM
I saw him in the amazing La Terrazza in Barcelona when he supported Sven Vaeth. He was out the back knocking out minimal house while astoundingly out of his box. He kept on knocking the needle off the record and laughing his head off. Stumbling 'round the place, disappearing for a few minutes every now and then and generally enjoying himself.

Having said that, his set was fantastic. Which is more than I can say for Sven - the big gurning lunactic."

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Just got Villolobos new double 12inch on Cadenza, "Achso". And after being so underwhelmed by most of his recent stuff, I really start liking his music again. Beautiful tracks, especially "Sieso". Wonderful winter melancholia. Four tracks, all at least 12 minutes long, every track as trippy as a Villalobos track can be, but much more focused than everything else he did this year.

And the the whole concept is so great: "Ichso", "Duso", "Erso", "Sieso" - that's "I'mlike", "You'relike", "He'slike", "She'slike" in English. That's what weird communication at 6am feelslike.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Ahem - Villalobos.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

so glad you translated that, i was wondering what the fuck that meant!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I agree. Achso is great. I'd say a return to form, but I've liked everything else he's done...so...

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

...he's just great.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

has anyone else heard the new Dinky? it's great! picked it up cuz she always seem to be lumped in with the Villalobos/Luciano/etc. crowd...really busy, crisp and clappy

my default assumption when i see an artist thread bumped is it’s gonna be the artist getting cancelled, i can feel myself brace for it

flopson, Sunday, 20 June 2021 22:21 (four years ago)

Really like this villalobos remix (w loderbauer)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y62JJWkI82w

Overlapping w the cancel thread, Villalobos always gave me megalomaniac vibes. Feel like someone who so fundamentally reoriented ppl in his direction to such a dramatic scale, releasing 30 minute tracks and such, has to be a bit self important and like, entitled.

I think this is why some of the cancel discourse is kind of weird to me. It’s kind of selfish to be an artist and definitely to be a successful one. To be like, “I’m gonna be the guy.” Can’t really separate the art from artist — if anything this affirms what I already suspected

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 21 June 2021 00:49 (four years ago)

thanks for the yt link, that looks promising. i think it's really weird to think that an artist making their art makes them entitled, even if it's 30 minute long tracks (?????? lol heaven forbid, though he certainly isn't tony allen). like to me that betrays a very fundamental misunderstanding of why artists do what they do. like they carry on in spite of, not because of popular acclaim in almost every case, even though the popular acclaim enables them to keep carrying on, materially speaking. but w/e.

he strikes me as a particularly gifted creative who is trying to sustain his continued interest in the face of what seems to be some substance abuse issues and is maybe milking his reputation of being a genius while delivering some self-indulgent stuff that could use some editing and paring down.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Monday, 21 June 2021 01:31 (four years ago)

Lol i mean … I don’t think you’re wrong either. Idk to me it’s a bit of a dialectical thing. And I’m saying this bc I feel like at some level it’s something I feel personally — the urge to be a creative person is at some level indulgent. And yea you are sacrificing and making unpopular choices & making yourself vulnerable in public & it’s easy to make these into brave / hero journey type narratives as well. But i still think you have to have a certain amount of unreal self belief to think not only are you gonna make art but you’re gonna do it in a way it’s never been done. The kind of thing that leads to being like, idk, I don’t really care about covid parties. Tho substance issues could as easily be at the heart of that, I assume a lot of the ppl who flew to Arizona during covid we’re addicts

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 21 June 2021 01:38 (four years ago)

I guess I should be clear that im not saying I’m trying to cancel Villalobos. I’m a huge fan of the art. Just that the things ppl are mad at him abt seem like extensions of, rather than undermining, the sort of impulses I imagine motivates someone of his great impact. That it’s hard for me to be like, wow I can’t believe he’s doing xyz

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 21 June 2021 08:56 (four years ago)

I wonder how precarious the financial stability of someone like Villalobos is. On one hand he's not exactly David Guetta, but on the other he's about as big as you can be in terms of ~underground dance music~ and he has been for over a decade now. I can almost justify DJs taking gigs when their sole source of income is these events and they've been mostly cancelled, but someone like Villalobos surely doesn't need the money, and when you factor in the backlash for doing it surely it cannot be a worthwhile exercise?

People who want to attend plague raves are going to attend them regardless of who is performing, so it's not like these events won't happen if the DJs pull out. I'm not sure if that makes it any less morally problematic to perform at them but I can understand the thinking of: this is going to happen anyway, so I might as well make some money since the opportunities are limited in these times.

I wouldn't personally be wanting to attend or perform a plague rave but I don't think it's as clear-cut as it seems.

boxedjoy, Monday, 21 June 2021 09:19 (four years ago)

I'm sure he makes a lot of money, but plenty of people who make a lot of money wouldn't do well if their main source of income was cut off for 12+ months. (n.b. I have no insights into his financial situation, maybe he has millions in the bank.)

toby, Monday, 21 June 2021 11:41 (four years ago)

i don't know if i could handle whatever drugs he's been taking but i kind of want some anyway

davey, Monday, 21 June 2021 14:01 (four years ago)

this has been a lovely little deconstruction of the (808) bass queen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbEnXefJSFI

davey, Monday, 21 June 2021 14:14 (four years ago)

For map's benefit, I pulled together a shortlist of villalobos faves which I realised contains a lot of his pre-Alcachofa material when he could be surprisingly straightforward and obvious - reflecting that my taste in his work mostly skews towards the more populist material. But yeah there's a lot of fun to be had in some of the earlier tunes like "H.E.I.K.E. (Ricardo Villalobos Mood Mix)", as well as from that early 00s period where he was starting to develop his mature sound but was still pretty banging (e.g. "Bredow", "Alsbalduin").

Anyway:

808 the Bassqueen
Sieso
Beck - Cellphone's Dead (Ricardo Villalobos Entlebuch Remix)
Que Belle Epoque 2006
Ichso
Alsbalduin
True to Myself
The Contempt (Last H of Porto Mix)
Richard Wolfsdorf - Buena Onda
Bredow
Rhythm & Sound – Let We Go (Villalobos Remix)
H.E.I.K.E. (Ricardo Villalobos Mood Mix)
Bakasecc
Fool's Garden (Black Conga)
Thomas Dolby - One of Our Submarines (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)
Ric Y Martin - Sini Est
Senor Coconut - Behind The Mask (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)
Fadutron
Nightmares on Wax - Back To Nature (Lobos On Wax House Mix)
Y.G.H.

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 21 June 2021 16:23 (four years ago)

man that shit is just so far out and sick. i love how he mixes together menacing and inviting textures.

his music just bursts with unique personality and it's such a thing of beauty when he makes the necessary effort, which strikes me as probably a difficult and time-consuming thing to accomplish.

of all the musicians that build a cult following around them ricky has to be one of the most deserving.

davey, Monday, 21 June 2021 17:18 (four years ago)

you guys, thanks for all the links and titles and such. so busy this week but i have my weekend sorted lol.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Monday, 21 June 2021 20:15 (four years ago)

I own more releases by RV than anyone else, which I owe to coming of age as a dance music fan in the mid-00s, when it seemed like his infallible-minimal-auteur status was untouchable. Few artists have had a similar impact on me, yet I’m amazed at how many things (including many just listed that I don’t know). Plague raves do bother me as does his decision to play one, since it’s not like he hasn’t politicized his choice of gigs before (for instance, he refused to play in the US during the Bush years) and the zanzibar one seemed particularly questionable.

Some favourites that haven’t been mentioned:

Miami
Frank Mueller Melodram
For Disco Only 2
Richard Wolfsdorf - Bosch (which desperately needs a repress)
Wispa, which is the latest thing of his I’ve really liked
His Tony Allen Remix
Tu Actitud
His remix off isolee - I owe you
fabric 36
Uli, Mein Ponyhof

etc etc

ed.b, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 00:54 (four years ago)

Definite cosign on "Miami" and in particular the "I Owe You" remix which I had intended to include in my list above. All the others that I know in that list are great too.

I don’t think he does 10+ Mins songs because of megalomania, it’s common to have this long tracks for other djs to use when mixing… and also: drugs, lots of them.

i feel like im being semi tongue in cheek here? like, i dont think hes hitler? just mean you gotta be a special kinda guy to be like, i think 30 minutes is actually a great length for a techno song and i know people are gonna rock with it and encourage it

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 04:23 (four years ago)

if only his stuff was available via an official bandcamp page.
other than the fabric release there is very little out there for non-vinyl folks.
hopefully at some point there will be a nice boxset released,
but i suspect the legality and multitude of labels involved will make such a treat impossible.

mark e, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 07:45 (four years ago)

plague raves make stealing his music more than morally justifiable, build your own bandcamp

His Taka Taka mix from 2003 is fantastic and the fadutron release he did in 05. Don't mind his fabric mix either but otherwise it's just too druggy for me, but not in the mind blowing acid+meth+skunk psychosis way.

RobbiePires, Wednesday, 7 July 2021 11:52 (four years ago)

Taka Taka is fantastic. I like the Love Family Trax mix as well but Taka Taka is the better of the two.

I do kinda miss that era of impeccably curated commercially released mix cds - i think Taka Taka and Immer and The Button Down Mind Strikes Back and Friends were all released within about the same12 month window.

Also cheers Tracer for the public service.

Some other good tracks I missed out on above (apart from some mentioned by others) are:

Mormax
Temenarc 1
Dummolator
Gucci - C&T Experience
Sense Club - Special K
Auch - Tomorrow Goodbye (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)

the pre-Alcachofa corpus is such a treasure trove! there's an exhilarating moment half-way through "Damm3" where it mutates into this Phylypsian half-step skank, undergirded by an almost impossibly elastic bass structure ... the way in which he confounds the formal conventions of house music is always so impressive
