this cdr i've got on has a whole stack of Elefant label stuff and got me to thinkin' about Spanish bands..

If Elefant = Flying Nun then what would be the equivalent of Xpressway?

Oh, and joan vich to thread, obviously.

Do you mean Spanish as in Spain-only, or are you inclusive to central/South America as well? If so, I'd advise you to check out Manu Chau (sp?), and the Gypsy Kings.

Bands from Spain is what I meant, but don't let that restrict you.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 05:34 (twenty-three years ago)

both manu chao and the gipsy kings are french with spanish origins. european, then :-)

so what do you mean exactly, jim? c/d, doesn't that mean classic or dud? there's loads of both, of course...
i started a thread once about le mans, which is one of my all-time favourite spanish bands... right now, my favourite spanish band might be Astrud... you should check out the acuarela label: they are the spanish flying nun.
oh, and of course you're giving me the perfect excuse to plug my old bands, or the bands on my label (they are the SHIT!)... :-)

i'd rather see which bands do you guys know from my country, so i can tell you more about them.

My fave spaniish bands are:
la casa azul, the vacaciones and gasca.

elefant is my favourite indie label, there is something more joyous and bombastic about spanish indie pop than any other indie pop (which I find kinda dreary these days)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, jel! i thought you only listened to journey! ;-)
there's another spanish label you might like, called spicnic.
i agree with you on la casa azul: i love the way they switch from pizzicato five to the boo radleys to 60's bubblegum. one of the best bands on elefant right now.

My fave spanish band has to be "Los Cucas". Just got their Si El Tiempo Lo Permite which isn't quite as gloriously poppy and tuneful as Humano es Raro but still has some great moments.

also I just remembered I have a Union Wireless CD on Elefant. Are they spanish? Not that I'm very into it tho.

phil jones (interstar), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i always thought spanish indie was the worst kind of indie, but keep in mind i think i only listened to Cecilia ann and Dover

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Any Spaniards in the house? I'm about to go and live in Madrid for 5 months, so tell me what I should go and see!

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

phil - union wireless are from london (although their guitarist is spanish, and that was the connection with elefant). i HATE los cucas!!!

chupa-cabras - spanish indie music is as broad as any other healthy scene in the world. i don't like dover at all, either (although they're the biggest selling indie act in spain ever). cecilia ann are not that bad, they have some nice melodic guitar pop songs.

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

andrew - you should email me off the board, or start a new thread on ILE. otherwise this would take the whole thread.

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

joan ... are Los Cucas like The Farm of Spanish music? Or what would be the better equivalent in the UK.

(There goes my credibility on IL :-(

phil jones (interstar), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

ok joan - i recently saw ojos de brujos. thought they were great live but know next to nothing about them. any thoughst. and what kind of label do you have?

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i like pretty much all of what's on Elefant, although I'm not that big on Migala, who I find sorta boring. I adore Nosotrash and Juniper Moon, and Vacaciones are excellent too..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't there a spanish band called The Oxes?

dwh (dwh), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Lucybell.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't seen ojos de brujo, but yeah, i've heard they're great live. seems like they've finally found the cool way to mix hip-hop beats (even scratching) and flamenco...
my label is an indie structure which reflects a big part of what i like in music: bands with attitude, songs, personality and an aesthetic vision. we have released some cool rock spanish bands, and we also licensed stuff in spain and france by bands like spearmint or the aluminum group.

jim - migala is not on elefant (you might have their single for elefant's singles club), they are the big name on the acuarela label. they can be pretty boring sometimes, i agree. but all in all i think they're a great band. i also adore nosoträsh: the last album is painstakingly beautiful (especially if you understand the lyrics).

i don't know about any Oxes or Lucybell. i know about a band called the Bisons, though. :-)

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
Tell me more about Dover, I just dug out their Late At Night album and find it very, uh, bewitching. The metal-ish guitars are a little much, but I really like the voice and the melodies.
Am I an ass?
I mean, for liking Dover, not in general.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the only spanish band i know of are hello cuca and they're awesome

ssean, Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

No-ones mentioned La Buena Vida: they're on Siesta records and are fabulous. The (female) singer has such a dreamy voice. Go to www.siesta.es and get the first two albums. That was an order!!!!!

Kim Tortoisei, Friday, 4 July 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

I was going to start a thread like this. I just feel like I hardly know any Spanish bands at all, right across the board.

Is Francisco Lopez Spanish?

There must be some Spanish Killed By Death style bands.

Spanish 60s/70s psych?? Jazz???

More please!
