is there some filter on slsk that makes it impossible to search for "twinkle"? it's the weirdest thing.
― unregistered, Monday, 7 February 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)
I wonder if they're trying to keep people from searching for sexy gay cumguzzling twinks. although it doesn't seem like any other dirty words are forbidden.

Revive of the year?
― Chewshabadoo, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:16 (fourteen years ago)
Soulseek's been rubbish these last few days.

Agreed, I think they are out of money or something. You should probably send them a couple bucks.

Soulseek's been rubbish these last few days years.
More appropriate. Maybe I just have bad luck, but about once every six months I get the urge to upgrade and give this another go, only to be utterly frustrated by searches turning up next to nothing on every possible term.

I think there are certain things that slsk seems to block from search for whatever reason. I mean, you cannot search for "beatles". It will return nothing, IME.
― I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 17 November 2025 15:09 (one week ago)
this has been the case for years, yes
usually you can find results by leaving out words that are triggering the block, e.g. for your example, just search for an album name instead
― Colonel Poo, Monday, 17 November 2025 15:27 (one week ago)
remember introducing my housemate to slsk in 2005 and the first thing he did was put "beatles" in his wishlist, it made it crash on opening and he had to reinstall it
― giving you schtick (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 17 November 2025 15:30 (one week ago)
Someone on either the slsk Google Group or /r/soulseek had compiled a list of blocked search terms and yeah: common search terms like Beatles, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Prince, etc. are intentionally blocked.
― Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 18 November 2025 00:33 (six days ago)
Is that because the results are just so long they often crash the software?
― Maresn3st, Tuesday, 18 November 2025 10:51 (six days ago)
I always thought maybe it was to avoid copyright hits on the most obvious stuff, but that actually makes a lot more sense
― waste of compute (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 18 November 2025 16:12 (six days ago)
I assumed avoiding copyright heat more-so. The possible software crash is more of a user-side thing they'd be less inclined to police on the user's behalf.

From another thread:
Some searches are blocked. I can't go into too much detail about it except to say that we don't have a choice in the matter.
I can't go into too much detail, but 'beatles' is one of the terms we have to filter for legal reasons.
― Kim Kimberly, Tuesday, 18 November 2025 16:58 (six days ago)
thanks for confirming that it's not just me. it's the sort of thing that has slightly bugged me for years but there are easy workarounds (search album name, filter by artist in the results) plus I don't use slsk nearly as much these days as I used to
― I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Tuesday, 18 November 2025 20:57 (six days ago)
Yah, if there are zero results for something I always try a different combination of album name or "'song name' flac" and usually I'll get a result
