can't believe they're even attempting this, tbh.

Surprised Japanese Breakfast is four lines down.

deep luminous trombone (Eazy), Thursday, 13 January 2022 04:25 (three years ago)

those headliners alone would sell this out

octobeard, Thursday, 13 January 2022 04:52 (three years ago)

Hasn't it been sold out for months, even before they announced the headliners? Anyway, people who go to fests like this don't give a shit about the music. It's all about the experience, maaan. Which I think these days means hats, drugs and Instagram.

This is like the ultimate Harry Styles fill the coffers stop. His last album came out in 2019, he just finished up a big sold out US tour, he's been stepping his toes into acting, it's like his manager told him, Harry, you've got a good band, you've got an army of fans, just say "yes."

can't believe they're even attempting this, tbh.

Why? By this point Omicrom will have likely run its course, and if they time it right Coachella can pioneer a new strain to super-spread. (Though to be fair, I don't think concerts post vaccination have been a particular problem. I have a reporter friend that *insists* Lollapalooza last summer spread a lot more cooties than the numbers show, but this person keeps telling me this and has yet to produce or report or publish or show me someone that has published something to prove otherwise.)

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 13 January 2022 13:04 (three years ago)

ya i guess everyone figures we're all essentially duped at this point anyway, time to bring back that YOLO shit right? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(insert gordon ramsay "fuck me" soundbite)

get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Thursday, 13 January 2022 13:45 (three years ago)

The people at Coachella epitomize that YOLO shit.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 13 January 2022 14:06 (three years ago)

A quick google of "Coachella" and "yolo" discovered a 2015 article in the Desert Sun reporting that Drake (!) was spotted wearing the new Apple watch (!!). Coachella literally makes history, man.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 13 January 2022 14:08 (three years ago)

It's all about the experience, maaan.

Steve Lacy is alive and he’s doing his solo Monk set on soprano saxophone!

A Pile of Ants (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 13 January 2022 14:31 (three years ago)

This will be my 11th Coachella. I have a consistently great time every year.

DT, Friday, 14 January 2022 04:51 (three years ago)

styles is a weird headliner, idk he's certainly big enough but doesn't feel quite as relevant or whatever, even though he has had a bunch of hits in the last few years. like, he would have fit perfectly on the second line?

ufo, Friday, 14 January 2022 07:03 (three years ago)

He's super charismatic, but it's all about the rabid fan base that dresses up and consciously radiates positive vibes. My daughter saw him twice on this recent tour, which came after several months/years of delays, and his (literal) followers are a dedicated sort.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 January 2022 10:56 (three years ago)

Styles is a perfect nostalgia act for college kids who were in their early teens when One Direction was the biggest band on earth.

deep luminous trombone (Eazy), Friday, 14 January 2022 13:02 (three years ago)

There might be a bit of that, but not to be Captain save a Harry, it's not really what he seems to be about these days. Like, he doesn't play One Direction songs or anything. It's more like a rock Justin Timberlake thing going on. When I saw JT on those first few solo tours I didn't get a real sense of lingering N'Sync stink or anything.

Huh, can’t say I expected this so quickly - Coachella, and Stagecoach, running ahead with no covid restrictions required at all - no vax required, no negative test proof required, no masks required.

i don't have a working crystal ball currently, but this feels like a bad sign.

get shrunk by this funk. (Austin), Thursday, 17 February 2022 14:20 (three years ago)

while the number of “incidental” COVID-positive hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths has increased in tandem with the ongoing surge, the number of hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths due to COVID itself has remained flat, according to government analyses. This suggests that vulnerable Danes remain well protected through vaccination and/or prior infection and that the costs of trying to control Omicron and BA.2 would not have been proportionate to the current threat.

bulb after bulb, Thursday, 17 February 2022 15:01 (three years ago)

yes but their rate of fully vaccinated is just over 80%, while the usa is just over 60%. i hope everyone who goes to coachella has a great time and stays safe, but man the whole thing just seems like a really not good idea.

agree, just wanted to provide context for Denmark.

(& I got Covid at a music festival in the last month, even with a vaccination requirement (but not a mask requirement for the outdoor shows))

As a surprise to maybe no one Kanye West drops out less than two weeks before this is happening

Bee OK, Monday, 4 April 2022 22:17 (three years ago)

Bee OK for headliner

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 April 2022 00:07 (three years ago)

https://ktla.com/news/local-news/coachella-announces-the-weeknd-swedish-house-mafia-taking-kanyes-slot/

The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia are taking over Kanye West’s Coachella headlining slot, the music festival announced Wednesday.

They will be performing together as co-headliners on Sunday April 17 and 24, after West, who now goes by Ye, backed out earlier this week.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 6 April 2022 17:49 (three years ago)

They're backing you, though, right. This is the way.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 April 2022 18:03 (three years ago)

If they were really smart, they would have booked Chris Rock

Roz, Sunday, 17 April 2022 06:05 (three years ago)

Oingo Bongo songs and the Nightmare Before Christmas and the goddamn Simpsons theme out in the desert

Roz, Sunday, 17 April 2022 06:06 (three years ago)

The main event

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2022 06:38 (three years ago)

I'm a complete noob on all things billie - what a weird juxtaposition: inside/intimate/headphone sound mix but on a main stage

StanM, Sunday, 17 April 2022 07:10 (three years ago)

It's beautiful isn't it

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2022 07:24 (three years ago)

StanM, Sunday, 17 April 2022 08:04 (three years ago)

switching to the end of channel 3 for a bit for Kyary Pamyu Pamyu playing to the most random crowd lol

Roz, Sunday, 17 April 2022 08:17 (three years ago)

but yeah, the global #1 twitter trend right now is: 2NE1

StanM, Sunday, 17 April 2022 08:31 (three years ago)

Where they belong. <3

I have misgivings over 88Rising as a collective, but they are undoubtedly a great platform for upcoming Asian artists and their lineup today was decent.

Genius move finishing off with Utada Hikaru -> Jackson Wang -> CL -> 2NE1 surprise (though personally I would’ve switched Wang and Utada on the billing)

Roz, Sunday, 17 April 2022 08:44 (three years ago)

I did not recognize Danny elfman at all. Wow.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 18 April 2022 01:45 (three years ago)

Orville Peck was how I expected

Bee OK, Monday, 18 April 2022 02:03 (three years ago)

Vince Staples

Bee OK, Monday, 18 April 2022 02:03 (three years ago)

Tuned in to a couple guys named Duck Sauce and holy shit this is horrible. Can’t tell if they’re a troll act or serious.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 18 April 2022 02:27 (three years ago)

lol

Bee OK, Monday, 18 April 2022 02:36 (three years ago)

Duck Sauce are still a thing? Is LMFAO also on the lineup?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 18 April 2022 02:38 (three years ago)

Vince Staples is also garbage. How the hell are these people popular? Suppose I’ve passed the age threshold to enjoy this kind of thing.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 18 April 2022 02:45 (three years ago)

lol i felt that way after catching a few minutes of Louis the Child, who came on after Phoebe Bridgers on Friday. Terrible beats, absolutely no sense of buildup, no idea how they're billed so high.

Roz, Monday, 18 April 2022 04:08 (three years ago)

Doja Cat

Bee OK, Monday, 18 April 2022 04:33 (three years ago)

I want to see Belly but wonder if I'm even going to make it through Swedish House Mafia

Bee OK, Monday, 18 April 2022 05:22 (three years ago)

So tired

Bee OK, Monday, 18 April 2022 05:22 (three years ago)

what the hell is the point of a chat with thousands of participants

StanM, Monday, 18 April 2022 06:30 (three years ago)

its just more like an IG verzuz chat or something.

curmudgeon, Monday, 18 April 2022 19:27 (three years ago)

xp: so you can spam "who the fuck is this washed-up Carly Rae Jepsen? We want Grupo Firme!" 1000 times

peace, man, Monday, 18 April 2022 19:34 (three years ago)

And "when is joji on?"

nickn, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:35 (three years ago)

Living in Mexico I don’t understand at all the massive fandom Grupo Firme is having at the moment.

They have some sort of godfather pushing them into stardom.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 18 April 2022 23:42 (three years ago)

I might have considered leaving this on while doing housework or whatever but it looks like they chose not to stream Turnstile, Nilufer Yanya, Molchat Doma, Code Orange, The Chats, Kim Petras, Spiritualized, Caribou etc etc So I guess I didn't miss much.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 17:44 (three years ago)

https://pitchfork.com/features/festival-report/coachella-2022-review-best-worst/

Pitchfork best and worst mostly focusses on what they considered best. They do blame some Coachella goers for skipping Turnstile

Their early evening set on Saturday was yet another successful iteration of this—successful, that is, in every sense except for the Mojave tent being only half full.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 18:53 (three years ago)

Guessing the writer(s) visited the artists they liked best although I would have upmost respect if they hate-watched a few sets just to include some fun vitriolic takes.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 April 2022 03:28 (three years ago)

Had a great weekend. Caught one song from Arooj Aftab, did not end up seeing Nilufer Yanya or Koffee.

lefsetz saw this tiktok and now he has just learned:

Coachella is where follower poseurs go to create content for social media. It's all a capitalist venture propped up by the attendees.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 20 April 2022 19:42 (three years ago)

a carefully considered retort:

well duh

also i don't browse tiktok, does everyone on there talk like that mushy mouthed person? had to rewatch the first ten seconds a few times just to sort out what words they were attempting to pronounce. one last observation: person on app that "manufactures fun" criticizes large scale event that "manufactures fun." person on app seems like the least trustworthy authority on "fun."

the thought occurred that it's just lef's deepfake tik tok avatar. though that's giving him too much credit, i'd wager.

whole post made me laugh a lot. thank you.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Wednesday, 20 April 2022 20:20 (three years ago)
